I have been fortunate over the past couple of weeks to smoke a plethora of Regional cigars from all over the world: Andorra to Switzerland and countries in between, there was bugger all duds among them and generally they were excellent.

A lot of kudos has to go to the distributors (and HSA/Tabacuba) for their attention to detail in getting out some excellent blends/cigars.

The question was raised last week at an early morning 3am discussion (yet another one).

  1. Your pick as the best two Regional Releases to date that you have tasted?
  2. Your pick as the worst two Regional Releases to date that you have tasted?

I haven't had enough of a cross section to comment on worst. Probably only 15 to 20 regionals at best.

I like the Ramon Allones Celestiales Finos & La Escepcion Selectos Finos the most.

Runners ups would be Punch Sabrosos, Por Larranaga Robustos de Larranaga.

I love this.

While there are none that can compete with regular production, there were a few exceptions, that could compete with it

There are none. But there are a few.

I would put that number more toward 10 to 12 that would compete with regular production, and half a dozen or so that outdo.

Best: LFDC short Robusto and PL Robusto Asia.

Honorable mention to the Italy PL small Robusto and punch Sabrosos

Worst, so far QDO belicoso royal (just a bitter unbalanced hot sour mess) and the QDO Superiores (no idea how they taste, every one I've had so far has been an unsmokeable wind tunnel, utter shocker quality control with these for whatever reason)

I honestly haven't smoked enough regionals in general, especially from regions outside of Asia Pacific, to comment with any certainty, but I love the discussion!

i'll get back and post my picks, once i smoke my first ones of the Edmundo Dantes 54, seletos finos and a few others i haven't had time to try yet. but as of now, the SLR pacificos and the Juan lopez No. 4 are top dog.

least favorite would be PL encantos. just not ready yet.

So, France then? hole.gifthumbsup.gif

I don't smoke many regionals, but I do enjoy the PL Encantos and RA Gorditos.

LOL I gave Rob a French RE, so yes!

Great question and it is tough to pick just two for each.

My Top 2 would be

La Escepcion RE Italia

SLR Pacifcos RE Asia Pacific.

Honorable Mention - JL Sel. No. 5 RE Andorra, Punch Superfinos RE Italia, Bolivar Simones RE Canada (OR from 2007 50 cab)

My Bottom 2 would definitely be

Juan Lopez Obus RE Francia

Sancho Panza Quijote RE Espana

Dishonorable Mention - VR Petit Unicos RE Suiza, Fonseca Amateur RE Francia

Top 2 -

Por larranaga legendarios

Ramon allones phoenicia 2008

Bottom 2 -

Hard to pick, but never had a good jl, punch, erdm or fonseca regional - but that's the same in the standard lineup for me too!

I haven't had many, but two that I liked and would keep buying if available were Bolivar Especiales #2 and RACF's. I stocked up on both and sadly ran out earlier this year.

Posted

Worst (at least as far as I am concerned): El Rey del Mundo Netherland No. 1, 2011.

Posted

I don't ever buy RE's but the 2014 SP Eslavo was in a 109 format so I couldn't help myself. So, I can't answer the entire question but I can sure say that the Sancho Panza Eslavo RE 2014 is a FANTASTIC cigar. Bugger is it only comes in a 50 cab so it ain't exactly cheap.

I'm going to stop buying RE's since I am batting 1000!!
