Mckucci Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I've been buying a boxes of Edicion Limatadas each year since I started smoking and collecting cigars back in 2009. When I can, I'll buy two boxes of each, one to smoke and one to put away. I'm curious to see what EL's people have in their collection. Are you smoking them or saving them? My current EL collection consists of: H. Upmann Magnum 48 - EL 2009 Partagas D Serie #4 - EL 2010 Trinidad Sort Robustos T - EL 2010 HDM Short Hoyo Piramides - EL 2011 Partagas C Serie #3 - EL 2012 HDM Grand Epicure - EL 2013 All of which are put away and I'm not smoking just yet! I'm patiently awaiting the 2014 release to be available. so I can snag a few boxes of the Cobiba Robusto Supremos!
Lant63 Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I'll pass on them all. I might get one box of the Cohiba's. All the rest aren't worth it in my opinion. I don't like the limited edition Marca blend. 1
potpest Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Never even tried an el; still plenty of decent regular stuff to buy at half the price. 1
CaptainQuintero Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Picked up the Cuaba 2008, Monte Sublime 2008 and the Partagas C3 2012. Not interested in anything since, primarily because of the ring gauge and then the recent pricings. Initially I liked the EL program as the cigars were unique and decent had decent pricing. Since the blends in them have become based on the generic EL blend with minor tweaks I've lost interest. Add to that the incredible pricing and the fact that I'm not overly fond of looking like I'm sucking off a horse, I'm quite put off by ELs. 4
puromaniac Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Tried the Mag 48s when they came out and must say I enjoy the chocolate notes and the price (in Cuba at least) has remained a pretty reasonable $160 CUCs--if you can find them. 1
DoubleDD Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Regular production here. I don't really get excited by the EL program. I've smoked them in the past but I will never buy a full box. Same with the REs. Nothing against them, I just prefer to stick with what I like and is readily accessible. 2
earthson Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 The few ELs I've had were underwhelming at best (RA Extras), and an outright expensive mistake at worst (H Upmann Magnum 48) 1
PigFish Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 … you have got to be kidding…? Friends, don't let friends smoke EL's… -Piggy Note: No offense to the thread starter. I have a long standing hate issue with the EL program; noo based on what in what it could be, but what it is… Quint and other has expressed my views rather gracefully… My words are much harsher! 1

PigFish Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 How are ELs considered a "program" and how are they so different from regular release cigars? pro·gram ˈprōˌgram,-grəm/ noun 1. a planned series of future events, items, or performances. The 'program' while a marketing success to collectors and the unknowing, produces largely sub-standard (the view of the author) cigars, bundled in smaller amounts, where more time and materials are considered in the packaging than in the production. If not, and you like them, simply disregard my statements and dismiss me as an anti-establishment type. The choice is yours! Cheers! -Piggy 2
Puros Y Vino Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Here and there. Some have been excellent, others "meh". Below are what I've smoked. Some "greats" IMO Cohiba 1966 Cohiba Piramides 2006 (never tried the 2001's) Montecristo 520 Partagas Series C No 3 Montecristo Grand Edmundo Romeo Y Julieta Dukes Punch Serie D'Oro No 2 Not so great IMO RA Extras Partagas Series D Especial Montecristo Sublimes I'm not opposed to the EL's but I'm finding they're hit and miss. 1
tagheuer Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 If I had any EL's, I'm afraid they are going to be humidor queens. 1

I have a long standing hate issue with the EL program; noo based on what in what it could be, but what it is… Quint and other has expressed my views rather gracefully… My words are much harsher! No offence taken what so ever! This is why I started the thread, I wanted to gain some insight on peoples opinion of them! Personally I buy them mainly because I enjoy smoking and collecting cigars, I like to put something away from each year that I've been smoking. So that one day down the line I can look back and see this box from 2009 etc. it's more for the nostalgia factor! Plus you can't argue the fact that in a walk in humidor they look cool all lined up next to each other, 2009,2010,2011,2012,2013 .... 1
Lotusguy Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I fell for them initially (starting in 2008) but found that most of them ended up not suiting my taste and for the latest releases I just cannot justify the ridiculous prices and ring gauges. No thanks. The only EL I have more than a box of left are the RAE and the Hoyo Regalos. The rest are partial boxes that I am slowly smoking through. 1
sheppsea Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 On the whole I've been disappointed with LEs and they don't appeal to me too much (unlike REs, which always really interest me but thats to do with them - in theory - only being available in specific region and collecting them from around the world I have really enjoyed some (for example I thought the HdM Grand Epicure from last year was excellent despite the ring gauge, which is also something I'm really not a fan of), and I have a couple of boxes of ones I have enjoyed that I'm saving a couple of years before trying again 1
Guest gerlinan Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I mostly tend to agree about the oversold ELs. However, the 2013 Punch Serie D' Oro No. 2 ELs have been smoking great. They seem to me to be a bit of a departure from the normal EL blends. 1
Smiley Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Love the Monte Sublime and the HdM Short Hoyo Piramides. Monte 520 not so much...yet. Have yet to try more RE's. Only have a box of La Escepcion Selectos Finos, which are great! 1
Maplepie Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 2000 - 2007 LEs have always been misses for me. Exceptions are the 03 Sublimes, 06 Robustos, and perhaps a few lighter wrapper ones I've yet to try like the Cohiba Double Corona Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry. 1
Rushman Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 I have smoked very few, never purchased a box. Had two cracker Cohiba Sublimes, but the others were good not great. I have found I lean towards the LCDH smokes (like RA Superiores, HU Royal Robusto) more than EL's. Similarly, I don't spend my hard earned coin on Behikes, Gran Reservas, etc. I get far too much joy out of a $10 or less CC that I just don't feel the need to spend three times that on others. I am wise enough to know I might very well be missing something, but I can live with that. 2
Diamondog Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 What I've tried: Cohiba 2003 Cohiba 2004 Cohiba 2006 Cohiba 1966 2011 RyJ Duke 2009 Monte 2000 Monte 2008 Monte GE 2010 Monte 520 2012 Hoyo 2007 RA Extra 2011 Upmann 2012 Punch 2013 RyJ 2013 What are must haves out of those: Cohiba 2004 Cohiba 1966 2011 RyJ Duke 2009 Monte 2008 Monte 520 2012 Punch 2013 RyJ 2013 Fail: Hoyo Grand Epicure - that being said, I have lots to sit on and am optimistic they will come around. Looking forward to trying all of the 2014s Call me crazy or unrefined or both but the EL program is a winner for me. 1
ErikB Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 If a cigar is good then buy it, smoke it, age it or share it. Try and see what you like.. You might find more joy that way than being a stamp collector with these ELs. But to each his own, of course 1
StingMeadery Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Love EL's and at one point my humidor was over 99% EL and regional releases...and still very high. I smoke them predominantly, reverting to regular production now and again (Mostly Behike's and RoboT) I really enjoy handing EL's out to my mates as most people just can't afford to smoke them. Nothing like putting a smile in a good friends face with a Cohiba 1966, Monty Sublime, Partagas Gran Reserva etc I smoke them ALL the time as everyday is a special occasion...save nothing for best... LIFE-drive it like you stole it! 3
