Ghabanos Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 No offense taken. It's simply this. A cigar is what I want it to be and what I need it to be when I want it to be so. I don't worship them. I take care of them and they exist in service to me. That's really all there is to it. Don't get me wrong, I don't go haphazardly bisecting Behike, Tang, or Torre Iznaga. But there are an infinite number and class of cigar and smoking occasions and I celebrate and enjoy them all. Wilkey I'm not advocating that's my practice but this my take exactly. BTW - did anyone see where my poll went?
UpInSmoak Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I've done it on one or two occasions. And I did it because cutting a cigar in half fit the occasion. Simple as that. It's hard to imagine there are cigar smokers so sensitive that observing this would get their panties in a bunch. I get it that if you gifted someone a cigar and they cut it in half right in front of you that might be interpreted as disrespectful. But if someone was choosing to do that to one of their own cigars, why would I care. Your house your rules so to speak. 2
bradbrennan Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Just asking.. please don't take this with any negative connotations. I'll try my hardest not to be snobby by asking : Why don't you just not smoke? Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry. Maplepie's getting tough on this one, stressed up there? I've never done it as I'm often wanting more from shorts, but it has to better than smoking half and saving for later?! 1
Maplepie Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Maplepie's getting tough on this one, stressed up there? i was in the lab spending a total of 17 hours processing a liquid dripping at 20cc/ hour. i can't leave the lab as i need to analyse the drops every 10-20 minutes it's a tad boring... 1
canadianbeaver Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Agree with Frank Bundwallah. Do what you want, they are your cigars. I always bring tons various cigars even on an overnight, so this is not a problem. But I have done this for people I know who are either are going to take a few puffs and leave it or have never smoked before. *GASP* True confession LOL.

Ken Gargett Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 what maplepie said agreed. rob will well remember the fishing trip to chile where he attempted to do that to my SLR DC's. nearly caused an international incident. despite being told they needed to bring sticks, half the group forgot. so they thought we could extend things by butchering my DC's. dead body stuff. 2

Ken Gargett Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I had to do it on a mass scale when fly fishing in Chile with Ken, Des, Macho and Greg. Outside of ken and myself, the others brought no cigars for the week We were heading to Havana the week following....but for this week in Chile (remote area) I took stock of what we had.....and it wasn't pretty. I cut my box of Partagas 898 varnished into 4:4.5:4's......OK we now had 50 cigars + a dozen mived PC/Corona Gorda/Robusto that I had. I shared them all around ....except for Ken...who refused to cut down his stash of SLRDC We now each had a pack of 15 cigars to last 7 days until we hit Havana. It was a tight week i posted before i saw this. my fault your mates are idiots? they really did expect me to dismember the DC's. NEVER! 1
Maplepie Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 agreed. rob will well remember the fishing trip to chile where he attempted to do that to my SLR DC's. Key word: ATTEMPTED. Would love to see what actually ensued! add the lithium Why? Is the queen clinically depressed now?Sent by the Enigma on BlackBerry.
Ken Gargett Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Key word: ATTEMPTED. Would love to see what actually ensued! what happened was i smoked my DC's in full, and was happy to share some with the other guys - in full. rob insisted on butchering his 4-5-4's in 2-2.5-2's. better i don't comment further. 1
Lotusguy Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I don't cut in half and I don't relight after more than 15 minutes or so. Ghetto is the right word. 3
Smallclub Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Ghetto is the right word. Winston Churchill used to relight several times his cigar… ghetto? Thinking that a cigar is dead because it's been off for a few hours is just wrong. There is a way to clean, purge and smoke a julieta or DC that was unlit for a time… 2

However, historical facts shouldn't be assumed as proof of taste or effectiveness in any field. Sometimes one might be on to something, other times not so much. What about your personal experience on the matter?

Maybe he didn't mind that cr@ppy taste after relighting his cigar, but because he did, should I do it myself? I don't think so. And no matter what it will never taste the same as it was before. No way, no how. I tried the holy way didn't work out, it was cr@p so I just never done again. Everybody to his own. 1

Sometimes one might be on to something, other times not so much. No offense but that is blah blah; you miss the point. What about your personal experience on the matter? As I wrote, there is a way to relight a "forgotten" cigar. Clean the foot, purge when it's lit again, wait until it's warmed up to keep the smoke in your mouth, ie, don't taste the first puffs (it generally doesn't work with fresh/young cigars). I've met many vets who would never waste a half of a DC because after they had to put it down for a couple hours – and these people were much wealthy than I will ever be.
Ryan Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 There is the example, similar to the one Rob gave.. You're in a bar/cafe/restaurant with a cigar-smoking friend. For whatever reason he has forgotten/lost/not brought his cigars. You have one DC/Churchill. Cigar shops are closed. What do you do? I know I'd cut it in two or at least offer. I know I'd enjoy the cigar a lot more, smoking with a friend rather than me smoking and him sitting there watching me. Having said that, I'd take the half with the cap. 3

Would it make a difference whether you cut the burn part off before relighting or just put flame to the cigar as is? Are we talking about minutes, hours or days after the cigar has gone out?

This is my personal experiment. 1
Smallclub Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 There is the example, similar to the one Rob gave.. An other one: I remember the interview, in the french mag L'Amateur de Cigare, of the CIO of one of the biggest company in France. This gentleman admitted that his schedule did not allow him the time of a robusto, his favorite size. Guess what, this €?0.000 a month business man smoked, on a daily basis, halves of D4 and Epicure No.2…
cigaraholic Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 I certainty understand the need to do this in lifeboat situations, luckily I've never been in a lifeboat.... 1
