Livo Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Pretty straightforward. Both classics in their own right. Thinking about future purchases and looking to see how others think they compare. Thanks in advance! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
RijkdeGooier Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Assuming it is about Partagas 898 versus PSD4, personally, I believe it to apples to oranges. A Ferrari to a Ford F40. Both good cigars but when you like more finesse down the years 898 all the way......
EuroTrash Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 898 here purely for consistency. I've had a few great PSD4 but a lot more crap ones. Never had a terrible 898 though. Also love the lonsdale size.
HarveyBoulevard Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Smoke a lot of both and enjoy both. I prefer the 898's size so that is my vote but I agree with the above. Two very different cigars and profiles.
Skyfall Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Two different animals. I like them both! P 898 is a richer, creamier flavor profile to me and Psd4 is more traditional, leather and some spice, but balanced and tasty too.
Habana Mike Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I like a good PSD4 but prefer the Dalias over the Robustos. 8-9-8 is to me a stronger, richer smoke giving some coffee and cocoa notes over the earth and leather. They typically seem oiler to me as well.
subport Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Apples to oranges. No point to compare them. Love them both. Smoked more PSD4 and I don't really know why but it is just a fact. Sometimes go with this the other day that. Buy none of them blind though. Both of them are great, classic cigars.
Rye Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Well, I have 3 boxes of 898 to one PSD4, so that explains my preference. Can't go wrong either way. Maybe 10ct boxes of both will help you decide
mk05 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I wish there were a thread on this in the 1990's to compare. How times have changed, when the greatness of D4 is marginalized before an 898.
Colt45 Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Count me as another for the 898 all day every day. As others have mentioned - consistency first, but I also prefer the flavor delivery of the dalia. Get some of each and decide for yourself 1
LLC Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I agree totally different cigars and is go 898. I think I may just have to have one tonight.
Laxman Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Two very different cigars. I try and buy at least a box of each every year to lay down. Some years when one or both are smoking well I will buy multiple boxes. 2013 I bought 5 boxes so far to lay down a few to smoke of the D4 and one 898. The 898's have been great but to me the D4's have been spot on ROTT. BUT code has been very solid from April to August or at least I have had good luck with them. 1
stigmata Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I think the Pd4 have been more consistent over the last year. From what i have seen. Only bought one box of 898 that i chose myself but havent had trouble with boxes and boxes of D4.2013 and early 2014
TheLiquidGator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Like them both. Think the D4 is better young. The 898 seems harsh to me when young and need more time to round out.
potpest Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 898's are up there as one of the best regular production smokes there is. I've never rated D4's that highly in the partagas line up; much prefer P2, lusi, shorts
Habana Mike Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I wish there were a thread on this in the 1990's to compare. How times have changed, when the greatness of D4 is marginalized before an 898. Yeah, tobacco and blends have changed significantly in the past couple decades.
Cisco Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Well, I have 3 boxes of 898 to one PSD4, so that explains my preference. Can't go wrong either way. Maybe 10ct boxes of both will help you decide It's too bad they don't make the 8-9-8 10s anymore. Makes the decision a bit harder.
nikesupremedunk Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 898 is such an elegant cigar physically and how it smokes. D4's are pretty good when you want a robusto, but unless it's smoking well it's nothing special. I feel like it's a special occasion every time I light up a 898. Also, thanks for the reminder, I need to pick up another box of 898 to put away.
ksblazer Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Tough choice As stated both are an apple and oranges type thing. Best Partagas I've ever had was an 898V. Best freshie I ever had was a PSD4. Like them both. But I've heard good things about the recent 2014 PSD4's. So I think if I were picking between the 2 at this moment. I would get some PSD4's.
Dbone Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Even if they smoked the same, I prefer the Lonsdale to a Robusto
Maplepie Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I prefer the Lonsdale to a Robusto I prefer Lonsdale. Full stop!
ZinZan Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 898 too different class to psd4. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD 1
