Ryan
It's Rob Fox's 40th birthday next week. I got an idea that I wanted to get him something a little special. For the last three years, Rob has organised a baseball game with Hamlet between the rollers and international visitors at the end of festival week, there are threads about those games on the forum. A few weeks before the festival, I got in touch with Hamlet to see if he could roll a cigar shaped like a baseball bat for Rob. I was thinking maybe somthing about 12-15 inches long, I've seen non-Cuban versions of this kind of thing before as novelties. I thought it would make a nice gift for Rob and a reminder of all the baseball. I even asked Yiorgos, who travelled to Cuba after me, to bring an empty presentation tube from a whiskey bottle and some bubble wrap so Rob could get it home safely! Of course Hamlet, being Hamlet, went above and beyond what I was expecting and made a cigar not only the shape but actual size of a baseball bat! We had a dinner at Santy's sushi restaurant on the Saturday after the gala dinner. Nice night, Hamlet + wife, Punch Joe and wife, Albert and Loren from Gibraltar, Bogusha and Paul from London, David and Yiorgos from Dublin, Rob's brother Stuart, Percy, more friends and myself. Not a bad restaurant, interesting little place, very out of the way. To rub it in, Hamlet let us know that it is not only shaped like a baseball bat but actually smokeable as a cigar! Of course part of his speech was his joke that Rob would be able to get it home in an empty whiskey bottle tube! Rob did get it home safely and told me he had a lot of fun with airport security in Havana and Ireland bringing it on as carry-on..
