Have received my first purchases from our hosts and wondered what the collective wisdom is on minimum resting time before smoking, I read 30 days. Any other offers?

Depends on the horoscop. If Jupiter is transiting the 8th House when the box arrives I smoke one immediatly.

Weather permitting anywhere from 5-15 seconds after I put my hands on box from the mail man

Sometimes I can't help myself and I'll fire one up right of the truck..... ....but I tend to agree with the 30 days of rest.......then 3-6 years!

I generally tuck into one on arrival and then make a decision based on that. Avoids agonising about how they're smoking!

I recieved a box and a few singles last week, smoked one from the box straight away and the singles all went over the weekend with no rest. All smoked fantastically

If it's something I don't already have, I'll smoke one after a week to see if it's worth buying a back up box. peace.gif

You have to consider the amount of time in transit as well... Sometimes it can take only a week and sometimes it will take 6-8 weeks.... Obviously the longer the cigars have been out of a humidor they will likely need more time to rest....

Of course if you're a believer in the Gospel of Shrink Wrap then a well wrapped package should have lost almost none of its humidity. I check the scent of the sticks and how they sound for dryness and go from there. I have yet to find any science that says flying cigars around changes their internal chemistry, but I wouldn't be surprised if someday, someone can explain the effect it has on flavors; there is after all some pressure and temperature changes even if the sticks were sealed well enough to not lose any humidity. And, when temperature changes, so does your rH; so when you smokes get chilled to 50F in the cargo hold their internal rH will rise to a higher level, maybe even dew point.

Of course if the sticks arrive dried out then you have to address that gently with time and humidity, and of course if they're still too young to smoke or in the mythic dull phase of development then they need rest but neither of those has anything to do with transit.

I tend to let them wait a week or more, but there've been plenty that I've smoked right off the boat. For me the bigger and more persistent problem is when I take smokes with me from home (humi at 62-65%) to the high temp, high rH environment of SE Asia with no humidor there. I find that the bigger ring cigars exhibit a faster burn of their filler than their wrappers on initial light, something I attribute to the wrapper picking up humidity before the heart of the cigar.

Yes 30 days is normal but lets face it, when I get a box of something I don't have back up on, and they look and smell fantastic, no shot I can wait a month. I usually sneak one after a week. ...No willpower

I smoke one right away. If it's good I keep smoking them until they get "sick". If they are not good I throw them in the back of the humidor and test them every 3 months.

I fire up one before I even get them in my Humidor. Then I let them hang out and I keep at least 10 of them for long term. Smoke em if you got em

30-180 days for me. May be a little overboard, but I've found a min of 30 days rest to help do the trick :)

I find that moon phase is more accurate. If the box arrives on a Waxing Gibbous- 17 days of rest is about right, a few days longer for Cabs.

I've smoked them right outta the mailbox after 3 weeks in transit in the winter, razor sharp burns and delicious...

I try one straight away. Never had any problems. Having said that nothings ever taken more than a few days to get to me. If I ordered from abroad I might wait a bit longer.

Typically rest period = travel period.

So if it takes 3 wks from Oz = then they rest for 3 wks.

Then there is always temptation....
