Australian Government to raise Duties by 50%

Recommended Posts

Well, they plan to raise 5 Billion dollars over 5 years by increasing duties at 12.5% per year commencing immediately. It is amazing that in this country that had a huge surplus 7 years ago, we now run a 20 Billion dollar budget deficit shead.gif

As we are coming into a tight federal election and still 14% of the country smokes ....it may be a brave move.

Let's see how the opposition handle this one.

opposition won't touch it. and if/when they get in, they'll be delighted that there is a little extra revenue to try and rectify the monumental hole the current idiot regime has left.

This really upsets me as my choice to smoke a fine cigar is slowly being taken away from me by Rudd and his Labor mates (though once in the Liberal / Nationals won't overturne it).

If in a few years the taxes are up by 50% overall than I will simply have to give up cigars, sad but true. Either that or smuggle them....?

What a "Government" we have (I was going to describe them, but with the words I want to use it would not be fit for this site)

Does anyone think that most politicians in Australia were bullied as kids and are just trying to get us all back?

I don't like this one bit, not only for you guys but also as Oz seems to be the testing ground to see just how far a population can be pushed with new social-eugenic laws, I fear this is coming close to home in a few years :s

This is so frustrating. This should be one of the best places in the world to live but you have 3 ineffective tiers of government, Top level spending and taxing not building infrastructure and cutting red tape, you have corrupt bozo's at the state level and the local mob are busy installing parking meters driving away local customer traffic and going on 'study tours' of Europe.

Its enough to make you start smoking! How ironic.

I honestly think that in 4 yrs, they will discover that revenue from tobacco tax is less than they thought due to the financial commitment and will then go after alcohol in an ever aggressive matter. After that it will be sugar.

Hallmarks of a once normal middle-class living are being taxed out of affordability already with the luxury goods tax on basics such as makeup etc.

At least they were smart and made it difficult for the average citizen to own firearms several years ago....

I can relate to your pain. Here in NY they raised tobbacco taxes 29% two years ago up from 46%. NY state tobbacco tax is now 75% in total above the retail price of the cigar. With these outrageous prices it is cheaper for us to order habanos online than it is to go to the local B&M and buy what used to be a 5$ cigar. Most places raised their prices to help with the decline in sales on top of the tax. Now most cigars here are in excess of 10$ for a 5$ cigar.

Luckily not all of the US has turned so socialistic but its a growing trend it seems here as in the rest of the "civilized" world. What a shame they cant just leave us be to enjoy lifes simple pleasantries.

Good luck brothers down under. And fight the good fight.

This is what I fear. Having ruined one industry they will have to go after another for revenue. Alcohol will be next, no two ways about it, then sugar, fat etc.

I hope people in the alcohol industry are learning from what happed to tobacco (a battle I believe is now, more or less, over) to protect not only their business but also those of us who like the occasional drink!

Yep, don't take the heat for implementing it, but reap the financial rewards by not repealing it. All sides of government just plain suck. pod.gif

Yep, we're the world's guinea pig. Just ask all the glow in the dark 'roos in SA! lol3.gif

No offense, but I wouldn't complain about a $5 cigar selling for $10. Compared to us, that's bloody cheap.

You can bet your life that alcohol will be next in the firing line.... then the luxury car tax, fuel excise, MLS, WET.... and there are over 200 national/state/local taxes & levies they can play still increase!

and just to show that krudd is the biggest hypocrite and the planet's most vile human, this from the paper today.

Tobacco firm Korber 'flew Rudd first class'

THE Opposition is demanding Prime Minister Kevin Rudd explain why he travelled first class to Europe courtesy of a major tobacco firm.

The government has announced it will raise the tax on cigarettes by 12.5 per cent every year for the next four years, raising $5.3 billion in revenue.

Labor has also used the opportunity to blast the Coalition for "being in the pockets of big tobacco" by accepting donations from cigarette companies.

But the Coalition is trying to shift the focus to Labor, alleging the prime minister accepted a first-class trip to Germany, funded by a tobacco company, last year.

Senior Liberal Greg Hunt said the Korber Foundation was responsible for manufacturing cigarettes, and questioned why Mr Rudd travelled to Berlin as a backbencher courtesy of the major firm.

"Here is Mr Rudd preening around, as usual, pretending to have some moral position," Mr Hunt told Sky News.

"He personally took two first-class flights to Berlin, stayed in a swank luxurious hotel, courtesy of belly of the beast, the heart of the tobacco industry."

He demanded the Prime Minister explain his justifications for the trip, and whether he thought it was acceptable.

Mr Rudd declared the trip in his register of interest, listing "flights and hospitality" to Berlin, funded by the Korber Foundation.

The trip, taken in October, included two nights accommodation and a return airfare to Australia.

Korber's founding company is Hauni, a leading supplier to the global tobacco industry that processes and manufactures cigarettes and filters.

X2.

I spend my weeks in NYC and have to make sure to regularly patronize and spend my money at my favorite B&M'S to make sure they can survive until hopefully someone new will be elected who will give premium cigar retailers a break and understand that they (and the people who enjoy them) are significantly different than cigarets and convenience store cigars.

The problem is, raising taxes just reduces taxable consumption, the people find ways to circumvent the new taxes.

Therefore when the people who think up the new tax level calculate it, they think adding the 50% will increase the revenue by 50%, it doesn't.

In most documented occasions, higher tax reduced the total revenue.

I heard of a new reform that should help you down under, for every stupid thing a politician says or does, you get him to pay a tax of 100,000 $, our bean counters calculated you will get over 10 billion the first year.

trickle down economy my arse, they gave tax breaks to big business and now they want to tax working joe to pay for it, same as always.
