Once upon a time I went to a hairdresser

Recommended Posts

...and she was lovely. Elia washed my hair, massaged my scalp, would ask me about this and that, introduce me to her *** hairdressing friends..(all lovely blokes), pamper, powder and blowdry.

I loved her. I hated every minute of the process.

So the prior Saturday and after two weeks of trying to get time for a haircut I had finally had enough and went down to the local suburb of Buranda as I saw a "Haircut Ten Dolla" sign a few days earlier. Well, both the price and the poor grammar appealed to me albeit Buranda is a tough suburb ala Will Smith's "I am Legend"....you would only inhabit the joint during the day.

So I popped in and saw three Asian women (that explained the sign) who didn't speak much English but had a thriving business. They pointed me to a seat which I promptly took and then to a board featuring photo's of 100 male celebrities with the price stickerd onto the photo.....either $10 or $15 (I assume $15 being PSP rotfl.gif )

I pointed at Antoniao Banderas and a bloke I didn't know and she quickly said $15 Dolla!

I said go for it baby.

20 minutes later. No conversation, Good cut. No fuss. $15

Priceless!!!!! lol3.gif

My favourite hairdressing experience was a large greek guy who looked like he should've been in a kebab shop. All the conversation we had was I walked in "Haircut?" yes I replied.. obviously.. he gestured to a chair..10 minutes later "$15 thanks mate" A quick no worries and I was out of there.. I'll never forget it.. Changed my life.

Now that I am moving, I will have to find a new barber. It's a shame, since the barber I have now enjoys cigars and home-brewing beer. The conversations aren't bad at all. I have even been able to pay with a cigar or two on occasion.

In the UK I go to Supercuts. Same thing; sit down and have a decent haircut. Who needs anything more from such a joint? I hate it when they do an elaborate wash with a faux head massage.

Was the nudie barber place closed?

When she was done did she offer you any noodles in the bowl she used to cut your hair?

I love this place..

I need to find a place like that, Rob! I also hate the process of elaborate haircut with all the washing- it's like going to the dentist...

Hope they open up a Haircut Ten Dolla In my town!

I shave my head completely so this is not nearly as big a problem for me but finding a good straight shave barber every time I move is quite tough.

In LA it was a family barber shop with the patriarch, two sons and daughter in law. In Houston it was a shop off Washington Ave where a very very large man palmed my head like a baseball and moved it around as he saw fit. In Mexico it was Fer's shop which wasn't bad. In cayman it's a Jamaican shop which does a great job as long as I remember to tell them I don't want it "shiny". If I do forget I walk out of there bald as planned but dripping with some sort of crap sprayed all over my head to give me the "shiny" look. Kinda messy.

I go to this barber, the waiting time is ridiculous and they don't accept reservations, but the place is amazing! A classic styled barber, where only men and dogs are allowed inside... Beer is served for all waiting around 1pm and the toilet walls are literally lined with porn.

I went to a place where the majority of stylists were trannies. At the end the he/she took off my apron and started to brush my lap with his hands as if he was brushing hair off my lap. I told he/she there was no hair on my lap and I wore an apron the whole time. He gave an embarrassed grin. I felt so violated. I dropped a 20 on counter and left without waiting for change.

Miss this saloon in Guangzhou/Canton ever since I retired.

Not much conversation except : cut short or cut not too short, a cigar, a can of Tsingtao and a rub-down.

Five dolla, lah.

I grew up in the east suburbs of Melbourne and just around the corner was a men's hairdresser called Sam Lopez. He took great pride in being a hairdresser and not a barber and had pictures of sexy women draped over Lambourghinis and photos of Italian football sides on his walls. No-one else had ever cut my hair until I moved to trendy St Kilda. I used an introductory offer mailer to go to a trendy hair salon at the end of my new street in my first week after moving in. When I sat down, the young guy said his name was Fabio. I explained that I had just moved in and told him the suburb I was from originally. He said his father owned a salon there, did I know him? I couldn't believe it. This was Sam Lopez's son! He was blown away - from father to son. Small world. Funnily enough, he was still living at home trying to make it as a hairdresser in his own right and went home and told his dad about the story. That week, my father went to Sam Lopez for a cut and Sam and my father had a good laugh about it. Very small world indeed.

What a cool place. I love old school barber shops that time warp you back 50+ years.
