HDM epi 1. Seriously good smoke.

Good to hear some love for the Upmann half coronas. Reminds me I am still waiting for the RG perlas! :tantrum:

Tough call, but I have to praise a MAR12 PSD4. Best "fresh" D4 I've ever smoked, and I've smoked a lot of 'em.

Bob, I believe we have identical boxes… SUB MAR 12… I think I am reconciled with this cigar that I gave up in 2004!

My review...

Out of curiosity, I broke open a box of MAR12 PSD4's. Probably the most beautiful box of D4's I've seen... uniformly dark brown and oily, with rich aromas of earth, barnyard and chocolate.

The first draws on this robusto were divine. As strong as I like a "fresh" young cigar, with loads of pepper and spice, and heavenly flavors that lingered in the mouth and on the tongue. A complex array of decomposing wood, fertile loam, bittersweet cocoa, sharp black and white peppers, cinnamon, allspice and anise. The smoke was dense, oily and mouth-coating. And the exhale was, well... wonderful. A feast for the senses.

Within the first third, I was thinking that this was one of the best D4's I've smoked in years, equal to or better than the best of my boxes of '08s. By the mid-point, it compared favorably to the best of my boxes of D4's from 2002 and 2004 (some of which I'm still smoking).

By the final awesome inch, I was convinced, almost against my will. This was, to the best of my recollection, the most impressive young PSD4 that I have ever smoked. Loads of everything that I love in a strong Partagas cigar, but in perfect balance, and so eminently approachable. Frankly, better than the D4 Reservas. This cigar was legendary, an unexpected and powerful reminder of why Cuban cigars remain, at their best, the finest in the world!

Is it still August? If it is, then this beauty was the best stogie I have smoked. If it isn't August any more, it is still the best smoke I have had this summer. Is it still summer? This La Escepcion was phenomenal! I smoked it this afternoon and I will not wash my hands until the aroma fades completely.

Me too. It had this awesome creaminess to it. Dec 2011 date.

Same here. Had one from 2002 box. Other worldly. I immediately got another box of them.

I'd go with a RA Petit Unicos 2009RE. Very tasty cigar. Reminiscent of the RACF. I tasted typical RA flavours with a hint of cayenne pepper.

I've been there, but then the next one is a complete let down. I sincerely hope consistency follows the trend of this smoke my friend. I've not had the luxury smoking through a "good" box of D4's, but I'm told they need time to get to that point. Guess time will tell in my case.

It may be a terribly biased case of recenteeism, but the 50 cab of Lusis I got from El Pres (BOU JUN 11) are just plain amazing - better on all counts than any other Lusis I've had. Not sure if the sticks destined for cabs are usually better for whatever reason or if I simply lucked out with a kick-ass cab of Lusis... but I'm finding it difficult to not smoke them all right away. The BHK 54/56 and Cohiba 1966 were all tasty, too, but these Lusis are just plain crazy-good.

Cheers,

~ Greg ~
