gr8tdanz Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 A BBQ restaurant chain I frequent in the US, Smokey Bones, has a TV at the bar set to post trivia about various topics. One of the items they posted is that Australians don't like Peanut Butter and Jelly, in particular the jelly part. So I have to ask, is this true??
CaptainQuintero Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I think PBJ is purely a US/North American thing. I've never seen it eaten in the UK. We only have jelly (jello) on ice cream when kids at birthday parties. Peanutbutter generally isn't really eaten. You get the odd chocolate bar with actual peanuts in though. I give this 6 posts before it turns into US politics
chr0nic Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) Jelly, if I get this right, is jam here in Australia... or something similar. I have to admit, I occasionally have a 'peanut butter and jam' sandwich- but only perhaps once every 3 - 4 years. No one else I know eats it, and probably wouldn't even know that jelly is akin to jam. I'd say that piece of trivia is right EDIT: However, I *love* peanut butter! Edited August 24, 2012 by ryanbesso
Ghabanos Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I'm from Canada and just don't get it. But I love egg and spam sandwich.
khamy Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I've heard PBJ is good and will definitely give it a go if given the chance but its definitely a texture thing that you need to cross to try it. So what sought of Jelly should it be? Strawberry or blueberry jam? egg and spam sounds like a superb matching. Vegemite, love the stuff, dont know why, its salty goodness without porn i guess.
Tebinium Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 American jelly is basically fruit juice and gelatin. This makes it perfect for the PBJ sammich. However, most of our Aussie jams are spreads or preserves and the flavour combination can be a bit extreme. Additionally, our peanut butter is not as sweetened as the US version (just try a US one from Costco) so that affects it as well.
Overproof Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I'm an Aussie and I fux with it on the reg. Kraft Crunchy PB and IXL Jam FTW!
orangedog Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 its like a jammy dodger with peanut butter. need to pair with a pint.
maverickdrinker Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 i thought aussies only spread vegamite on their toast...
Rushman Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Try PB and Apple Butter, an apple based spread that's diff from jelly or jam........it's way better than any pbandj --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631712,-87.070591
ramon_cojones Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I personally use jam instead of jelly and peanut butter must be of the organic variety, world of difference from jif or skippy garbage.
Duxnutz Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 PB&J is disgusting IMHO, but it's probably the same as us eating vegemite in toast (don't do that either). Guess it's all what your brought up on...
Duxnutz Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 On another note, my lady objects to Australian peanut butter and imports her own - JIF!
khamy Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 JIF is a brand of bathroom cleaner in Oz land. just sayin..
theholmesmob Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I'm a Queenslander of a certain age and I cannot call it anything but Peanut Paste...now as far as the jelly part, I just cant get my head around it...
mk05 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 MMM...nothing says a white picket fence and wives book club like a PB&J.
Tan1801 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 On the topic of peanut butter, peanut butter, sweetened condensed milk and sugar on waffles ftw (or diabetes...)! I've had PB & Jam before and that was alright. I love Vegemite! I don't mind marmite and bovril, but they aren't vegemite. I don't eat many sandwiches in general though.
Pilgrims Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 The best sandwich in the world (IMHO) is: 2 bits of toast, one one you have PB, 5 drops of Tabasco and some sweet chilly sauce on the other Jam and then in the middle 3 or 4 bits of crispy (essential) bacon, ok it sounds a bit much but it works and works well!!
Styler Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I love peanut butter, I'll have peanut butter with jam on a slice of toast now and again.
dicko Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I've tried it and enjoyed it. I'll take my Vegemite and butter over it though unless I'm in a sweet mood
BrotherBear Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I bring my own PB&J with me when I travel to Cuba.
thechenman Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 PB&J is the ultimate on the go sandwich. Simple and quick to make. Great energy food to for when climbing, hiking, skiing, mountain/road biking, etc. For me it does not matter whether it's fruit jelly, jam, marmalade, or preserves. It's all good. I also like it best on soft white bread, like Wonder Bread, but sometimes you've gotta take what you can get.
CaptainQuintero Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 In the UK jelly is fruit flavoured gelatine. Jam is preserves that your Nan makes and you spread on toast like marmalade/strawberry jam etc Bread in the UK is unsweetened too which I would guess makes a big difference when compared to US bread/how a US sarnie is made
GernBlansten Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I personally use jam instead of jelly and peanut butter must be of the organic variety, world of difference from jif or skippy garbage. Agreed! Jam is the only way to go. BTW, peanut butter (chunky) on a cheeseburger is pretty damn good!
