"Fact" about Aussies and PBJ?

Recommended Posts

A BBQ restaurant chain I frequent in the US, Smokey Bones, has a TV at the bar set to post trivia about various topics.

One of the items they posted is that Australians don't like Peanut Butter and Jelly, in particular the jelly part.

So I have to ask, is this true??

I think PBJ is purely a US/North American thing. I've never seen it eaten in the UK. We only have jelly (jello) on ice cream when kids at birthday parties. Peanutbutter generally isn't really eaten. You get the odd chocolate bar with actual peanuts in though.

I give this 6 posts before it turns into US politics :lol3:

Jelly, if I get this right, is jam here in Australia... or something similar.

I have to admit, I occasionally have a 'peanut butter and jam' sandwich- but only perhaps once every 3 - 4 years. No one else I know eats it, and probably wouldn't even know that jelly is akin to jam.

I'd say that piece of trivia is right :ok:

EDIT: However, I *love* peanut butter!

I've heard PBJ is good and will definitely give it a go if given the chance but its definitely a texture thing that you need to cross to try it. So what sought of Jelly should it be? Strawberry or blueberry jam?

egg and spam sounds like a superb matching.

Vegemite, love the stuff, dont know why, its salty goodness without porn i guess.

American jelly is basically fruit juice and gelatin. This makes it perfect for the PBJ sammich. However, most of our Aussie jams are spreads or preserves and the flavour combination can be a bit extreme. Additionally, our peanut butter is not as sweetened as the US version (just try a US one from Costco) so that affects it as well.

PB&J is disgusting IMHO, but it's probably the same as us eating vegemite in toast (don't do that either). Guess it's all what your brought up on...

On the topic of peanut butter, peanut butter, sweetened condensed milk and sugar on waffles ftw (or diabetes...)!

I've had PB & Jam before and that was alright.

I love Vegemite! I don't mind marmite and bovril, but they aren't vegemite.

I don't eat many sandwiches in general though.

The best sandwich in the world (IMHO) is:

2 bits of toast, one one you have PB, 5 drops of Tabasco and some sweet chilly sauce on the other Jam and then in the middle 3 or 4 bits of crispy (essential) bacon, ok it sounds a bit much but it works and works well!!

PB&J is the ultimate on the go sandwich. Simple and quick to make. Great energy food to for when climbing, hiking, skiing, mountain/road biking, etc. For me it does not matter whether it's fruit jelly, jam, marmalade, or preserves. It's all good. I also like it best on soft white bread, like Wonder Bread, but sometimes you've gotta take what you can get.
