El Presidente Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Over the past few months I have taken to having a 30 minute kip during the afternoon. I do get up feeling refreshed but I have found that I am increasingly becoming reliant upon that doze on the deck Are there any other advocates out there for the "Power Nap" ?
Strada Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I do it all the time. For me it's less than 25mins if not I get up super lost and worst than before. Also, try having an espresso right before you snooze. It helps to rebound!
TankerT Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 My wife forces me to take one. Apparently it makes me a lot more tolerable.
BrotherBear Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Supposed to be great for Blood Pressure... You cardiologist could probably give you some good info on this.
Ghabanos Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 If iwas the boss I would encourage it. It does wonders.
NJP Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Always. Great minds need rest. And as above my wife says I'm more tolerable.
WarriorPrincess Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Well now I know why Smithy and I can't go up to deck in the afternoons and I thought you were working hard, just like I am. Can I have the 2-30 to 3-00pm shift on the couch for my power nap, being on Dry July I could use one starting to get cranky and Smithy is running for the hills everytime I say "Oh MY God" . Just think of how peaceful it will be when I am so refreshed after my "nap" Back to work but I won't be answering emails between 2-30pm and 3pm
snickers99 Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 In the interest of full disclosure I should reveal that I am a physician. Nothing wrong with an afternoon siesta. Just consider two things: First, too much sleep during the day can interrupt the normal sleep/wake cycle resulting in poor sleep at night. Second, you may be napping BECAUSE you have poor sleep at night. This could have many causes including sleep apnea, frequent urination (due to an enlarged prostate), chronic pain, excess caffine intake, stress, etc. Having said that I had a short nap this afternoon that really helped. Would have been better if it had followed a good screw!
jedipastor Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Power naps are great. I have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, so they are a physical necessity in my house, lol.
Milan Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Naps can also be adopted as part of a biphasic sleep pattern, which is great if you like having those few extra hours a day!
Dbone Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 LOL Rob, dozing on the deck Czar crew... make sure there's a few ShooAway near the boss while he's taking his siesta
OZCUBAN Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Hi Fellow power napper I have power/nana naps all the time ,and yes I think there a bit addictive Listen to your body I say OZ
Hypersomniac Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I have a sleep disorder, so I like to nap.... well sleep... all the time. From everything I have read though, a short, midday nap is great for you. It focuses your mind, makes you more productive, and is overall better for your health. That's what I have read anyway.
isa Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Well , a doctor has spoken, so .... Personally, i dont need it, i usually remain fresh till i go to sleep, but if someone feels the need, then 30min sounds good. Particularly , if one has had a heavy meal or has had a late night(with a few drinks maybe), then the body might get lethargic - so a quick power nap can boost ones energy levels , IMO.
Rushman Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I am a big proponent of power naps. When I was part of corporate America, two or three times Per week, schedule permitting, I would close my door, put the feet up on my desk and power nap for up to 30 minutes. Fine line for me, less than 10 mins or more than 45 mins makes me a zombie. Occasionally, when it's slow, I still nod off in my chair on the front stoop of our store, although its not really sleep as much as a very low level of consciousness. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631702,-87.070645
Hohenthal Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Are there any other advocates out there for the "Power Nap" ? For one because it gets me in much better shape for my concert performances both mentally and physically, and not to forget, I am much easier to live with for the rest of the day I can do with very little night sleep for a number of days or even weeks in a row, but a little siesta really does a miracle!
Fuzz Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Rob, be honest. You're not having a siesta. You're just recovering from hitting the sauce a bit too hard.
dicko Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I have naps when I can. They are great for me as long as they don't interrupt my sleep later that night as the learned doctor above warned
Ken Gargett Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 for quite some time, if i am working at home, i've often tried to grab 20 minutes on the couch post lunch. provided it is just 10-20 minutes, great stuff. if i sneak past that, usually don't but..., it can be very disruptive and very tough to get back into the swing of things.
anacostiakat Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Depending on my schedule I sometimes nap after lunch for a quick 15 - 30 minutes or so. I vote naps are good.
Nino Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I like to have a short siesta, the discipline is to make it that : short. No more than 20-30 minutes. Even the airline industry has recognized the benefits of short "power naps" and they are encouraged in a 2 man cockpit on long haul flights, following certain procedures.
Scdalak Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 following certain procedures. LOL, such as ensuring the auto pilot is engaged????
CanuckSARTech Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Power naps are a good thing. When we we're in the field, and going through "sleep deprivation", we got about 3 hours sleep, total, during 5 full days of ops. So, a 15-minute stretch here and there was definitely helpful. The way it was explained to us, is that the human body needs a minimum of 15 to 20 minutes of sleep time to operate for every 6 to 8 hours of awake time. So, if you're up for 14 to 16 hours in your average day, a split right about in the middle with a 20-minute nap is really effective.
CaptainQuintero Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 I'd sometimes like to but I always end up feeling groggy and never come around properly the rest of the day. Also I never get a good nights sleep after napping.
