Which Swiss RE

Recommended Posts

I might have occasion to visit Switzerland sometime in the summer. So, if available, i would like to pick up a box or two of their regional releases. I wanted your recommendation in this regard, if releases from past years are available, which RE would you recommend? I seem to prefer medium to full body & bold flavours.

I had the Swiss RE Por Larranaga Valioso, Juan Lopez Short Torpedo, and a few other massive bulk size RE's that were for the UK market, and unfortunately found them sadly lacking in flavor and content. Maybe if Switzerland imports a few Regionals into its territory you can seek out some for the Asia and Canadian markets. Who knows, maybe a few Bolivar and Ramon Allones RE's, if they're in Switzerland, may hit the mark. JM2C

I have smoked them all over the past few years as I am in Zurich quite a bit with my business.

The best Suiza RE over the past few years IMO has been the Juan Lopez Maximos. It also smokes to your desired profile of med to med/full. All the others are just OK and nothing really special as far as I am concerned. There are better regular production cigars that I go to at a lower price...

The JL Maximos are still available as I always pick up a single or two out of the LCDH Zurich. I also see them sporadically in the various Davidoff shops strewn through out the City Center.

Good luck!

Recent Swiss REs don't sell, to the point that Intertabak just released an humidor filled with 25 of each the two 2010 Editions : ERDM Elegantes and LGC Triunfos.

I may be wrong but it looks like a makeshift job to get rid of unmarketable cigars IMHO.

I wonder if it's related to crackdowns on grey market dealing? I can't remember off hand but doesn't the Swiss market get a very large amount of cigars made for their REs considering the size of their domestic market? There is the general taint that Switserland suffers from because of the grey market too?

No. The grey market stuff stocked at the "Port franc" in Geneva wasn't sold in Switzerland, but to foreign markets, mainly USA.

Same deal as the recent JL and Boli Jars in Germany then... Are they charging a premium over the previous packaging option?

Not quite correct. The Juan Lopez Jar was planned. The Bolivar Jar on the other hand would agree that this was just do sell the stock still in the warehouse.

I think you are right on the JL - now that I remember, the initial batch was gone rather quickly (and it seems the jars are already sold out as well). I for one didn't care for either one of those REs at all. Will give them another try when I am back in Germany next week, though.

We have Swiss RE's at the LCDH here in Toronto and another retailer north of the city in Orillia, Ontario. I wonder why they are so readily available here?

I would not touch a box at 200-300% tax mark-up but maybe 1 or 2 as a special treat... Maybe.
