  11. It's Friday on this side of the pond, and after an excellent Monte Especial No. 1 yesterday, thanks to Brad (and Werner by proxy), I figured I celebrate with another Montecristo. The wrapper is silky with a slight sheen to it, and almost has a reddish color in the right light. The cold draw was a little on the tight side, but nothing too worrisome. I noticed a hard spot near the shoulder, which was probably the cause. I fired it up anyways and found the draw was not perfect, but copacetic at least. I immediately get a mouthful of heavenly, creamy milk flavors with some chocolate on the finish. There seemed to be just a hint of leather and maybe some spices as well. Perhaps nutmeg? As I progressed into the second third, the taste of coffee appeared, but was still playing second fiddle to the creaminess of the cigar. The coffee really stepped up in the final third, and was joined by the revisiting leather, and maybe - just maybe - some earthiness as well. I was also still tasting the baking spices, which continued to increase alongside the coffee tones. At the end, the cigar did get a bit bitter and harsh, but I was nearly burning my finger anyways, so I wasn't disappointed. The burn stayed spot on and the ash was dense, so besides the slightly tight draw, construction was great. The flavors were classic, delicious Monte, with medium-full body and medium strength. This is a great box and I look forward to seeing how they mature in the next year or two.

  14. Love a good review contest. Cigar: Punch Serie D’Oro No. 2 (Edicion Limitada 2013) Box Code: AME JUL 2013 Review Date: 10/17/2014 (Age: 1yr, 3mos) Appearance: This is a good looking cigar—the sort of caliber I’d expect in an Edicion Limitada. It has a beautiful, dark wrapper with a subtle, oily sheen to it. Closer inspection reveals a nice, evenly-distributed splotchiness. The prelight smell is the perfect mix of leather and barnyard. First third: Some really fantastic flavors right from the get-go. The core is bold, rich, and peppery. As far as Cubans go, I’d call it full bodied. It has a very pleasant leather and coffee bean flavor with a touch of berries. Second third: The berry notes are now more of a syrupy, stewed fruit. They aren’t ever-present, but instead come and go to bring in some nice complexity. A nutty flavor creeps in from the background, something like those peanuts that come in a can with the skins on them. Third third: It’s getting a bit hotter at this point, and as a result a bit of youth shows through, giving a chemical note through the nose. It’s not too offensive though, just a matter of pacing myself and smoking it slowly. The complexity has simmered down; now there’s just a simple rich leather and fruit taste that resembles the recent Punch Punches that I’ve had. Smoking time: 1hr, 20 min Conclusion: This one lived up to the hype. It’s as if the blender took the excellent flavor of recent Punch Punch, added in a bit of RASS character, and then dialed everything up to 11. I paired this with some Ron Zacapa 23, and it was a perfect complement. The bold sweet rum offset the rich peppery cigar very well. This cigar was one of three that I got in a box split. I wish these weren’t so expensive, because I could see myself indulging in a box and watching how they mature over the next 2-3 years. Rating: 94. With a little more time I can see these achieving a 96 or 97.

  24. An exceptional AME MAY '13 Por Larranaga Montecarlo paired with a Yunnanese black tea and sparkling water. The flavor was probably the best of all the Montecarlos in my box but the construction and burn were considerably off; it went out on me 7-8 times! I'm a slow smoker but I never smoke slow enough for a cigar to go out on me that many times. Fortunately, I lit it back up quickly each time so flavor destruction was minimal. It was also a little underfilled in the midsection but nothing in the way way of producing any hot smoke. The smoke was very thick and the body fuller than a typical Montecarlo, with very strong notes of dried fruit, a maltiness toward the back end, and even hints of a caramel that I surmise will be characteristic of these in the upcoming months and--if I can keep my hands off them--years! I'd rate a solid 90 for this one.

  27. I've been very fortunate to have great friends who have shared some incredible vintage cigars with me. The 1980's Monte I smoked recently was anything but bland and weak. Ultra smooth, but still bursting with layered flavours from the first draw. Buying can be tricky, as you have no control over storage conditions or provenance, but when they're good, it's a treat. I am happy I waited until I was more experienced in getting to know my palate before venturing into really well aged stuff, and I can't justify spending fortunes on aged stock while I'm still "young" and able to age my own. Whenever I do get a gift of something great, I am truly grateful for the experiences it brings.

  28. Thought I would give something new a chance. A nerby wine merchant has recently dumped out all their old mouldy, dried out and sometimes ripped cigars and invested in 25+ boxes of brand new stock! I finally was able to buy my first ever cigar at a B&M in over four years of smoking Cuban cigars! I picked out a couple of Flor de Cano Short Robusto - UK Regional 2010 (but only released this month). Coming in at 4x50 it isn't the biggest cigar in the World but the RG actually makes up for it, this stick lasted just under an hour. Construction and draw -Perfect Cold draw - sweet fresh tobacco and a slight floral hint Around 13 pounds You can see the size of these here, to be honest I wasn't put off; they are something unique and I was more interested in the flavour of this new blend than smoking time. I thought it would be around a 45 minute smoke so again it wasn't an issue for me although others (Ken) may not be so happy lol Immediately the first draw was floral, no spice what-so-ever and a slight hint of sweetness. After the first half a cm this just kicked up into a whole new gear. Mouthfulls of sweet smoke on the tongue were accompanied by mild fruits, mainly grape and that slight floral hint in the background. No spice still and the cigar was mild-medium (perfect for me). The second half (size constraint here) was a magnificant continuation of the first, each draw resulted in lovely sweet smoke flowing over the tongue and fruity waves of red and white grape mixing in but never fighting each other, always just flowing gently over each other. Final inch of the cigar realy shocked me, I genuinely expected just more of the same but bread and butter pudding came in (complete with dried fruit) for half a centimetre which then changed to christmas cake but instead of christmas spice, that wonderful grape wafted back in. I had been in a stressed mood and nearly didn't even bother with a cigar tonight but boy am I glad I did. I'm in such a great mood after that hour that I'm going to go pick up a the rest of the box of these tomorrow! This cigar I can safely say was an easy 96 for me; possibly the best cigar I have had in the few years I have been smoking Cuban cigars, it really was just that good. The best thing is, these were slighty over humidified. God knows what they will be like after a week or so in my humidor and have dried out a bit! Huge congratulations to Simon Chase and the rest of the people at Hunters and Frankau for getting this blend together and it was well worth the extra years wait. Half the price of the BHK 52, half the size, ten times the enjoyment.

  29. I have heard one of the most asked for things the soldiers overseas want is cigars. And I understand why. Cigars give the soldiers a little bit of back home, a cigar brings relaxation in an otherwise stressful environment and surely is therapeutic. Would be a shame if big brother tries to stop cigar care packages to these guys who put it all on the line.

  36. Thank you very much Rob!! As most of you have noticed I have been quiet for the last few years, I have experienced massive changes in my life. This has been a challenging time for me and my biggest outlet and stress reliever has been to open the "Ultimate Destination", my little slice of heaven...Havana Tranquility. I have put everything I have into this project...heart, soul, blood, and every cent anyone was stupid enough to lend me (and thankfully there are a lot of stupid people out there). The concept is 90% club, 10% retail emporium. This is a way that I can ensure that true "Cigar" smokers who embrace our culture, can have a place to escape the world and be with true brothers (and sisters) of the leaf. No cigarettes, no Hookahs, no "medical marijuana", no BS!!! Just true and pure enjoyment at my concept of Nirvana. Any and all current FOH members are welcome any time, on me. If you are down then just identify yourself as a Friend of Habanos and you will be admitted into the VIP Members Lounge. My Executive Operations Manager is Ron Andrews who owned the prior shop/club for over 12 years, and 2 club members who also work there are “Big” Tom and Al. I hope you can make it by for a smoke soon, I built this place 3 minutes from the hospital where I work so just call my cell phone and I will tell the patients that they can wait (they aren’t going anywhere) and I will run down and join you.
