While in the main the consensus here is that these are a miss, I have read an opinion or two here, and a number of opinions elsewhere

that find these to be an acceptable mild cigar.

I've not tried any of the line myself (yet), so it would be foolhardy of me to challenge the opinions of those who've actually smoked them.

And even if I had and disagreed, I think reviews / ratings really are only a guide, and apply when tastes / palates are fairly similar.

Smoke what you like, like what you smoke.

The Regata is the one Monte Open we have not tried but will do so shortly.

CA only smoke the first inch of any cigar. I think Ken and Smithy would agree that the first inch of the Eagle and Master didn't entirely suck. No 91 but a solid 84/5 from memory. It was after the first inch that the cigar crumbled to the depths of meaninglessnes.

If, all they experience is the first inch and thereafter rate it, then their rating system is pure bullocks don't you think?

While talking to cigar vendors around the World in the nineties, CA was a joke, when some NC won the ratings over CC and now, when the name is mentioned, no one of the same vendors even acknowledges it - an enigma, at least.

A Curious observation; most of the cigars CA gave the high ratings to, do not exist anymore..

That is really funny, just as Robert Parker's ratings for wine... RP rates... what?

And what is really funny is that I am a regular subscriber to the comic book, since 1994, and never paid a cent for it, period! Always, friends, buddies, FF miles, promotions, etc.., The Wine Spectator, as well, since 1999..

What a business - GENIUSES!!! :)

I used to wonder how those guys at CA could get a good nights sleep after seeing their cigar ratings until I found out they only smoke an inch or less of a cigar. You taste wine to evaluate it, but you need to smoke a cigar, not taste it. There's lots of cigars I would enjoy if I only smoked an inch or less, but I'd like to smoke them down to an inch instead. What makes Cuban cigars unique is the cigar stays soft and smooth in your mouth until you burn your lips. CA is like having a critic go to a three act play and leave during the first act to go write the review.

Taste is subjective.

A rating scale of 0-100 (de facto 80-100) is a joke.

Basing ratings on 1/2 to 1" of a cigar is a travesty.

Still, Juan Lopez #1 is a fine cigar on my palate, and Siglo VI are exceptional. I'd give the former 4 smoke rings and the latter a consistent 5 smoke rings.

No recent experience with Epi #1 here nor any with the new Open line of Monte.

when you say 'we', good luck with that. have not tried this, and in no rush, but the others left me very unimpressed. but each to their own.

it is like wine - find the reviewers who make sense to you, who suit the styles and personal likes that appeal. there would be plenty of people out there who would wonder at some of the smokes we liked or hated and we don't always agree.

but the regata would have to have taken one mighty step up to get a rating like that from me after what i saw with the others.

James Sucksling is my hero!!!!

CA's ratings ARE a joke, but Robert Parker- I love the guy's Bordeaux ratings. We have similar tastes & he keeps coming up with great $20 petite chateau. Without his ratings I would no longer be able to afford to drink Bordeaux, as my old favorites are now $50+ a bottle.

CA goes on to say "The Cuban Montecristo Open line is an extension of the venerable Havana brand and is marketed by Habanos to new smokers who love outdoor activities. It scored 91 points." What in the world does one cigar have over another when it comes to me liking outdoor activities?????? Anywho I just found it pretty amusing.. -Mike

What I take from this is that due to the open line being so mild in complexity and overall aura, it is one of those cigars that needs no attention paid to it during the smoke. Its one you could have while driving or playing golf, one that doesnt render any added thought. That is also why they have pointed it out to be fit for a "beginner smoker", it contains nothing to call home about and therefore able to fall in the background during other activities.

I find it extraordinary how a brand with as much history and prestige as Montecristo would bother releasing such a bland specimen.. Makes no sense to me

I too think that CA ratings are a joke. Still the magazine does make for some good cigar porn. I have to admit though that I do like checking out the vintage cigar ratings/reviews...
