EAR: The best of Jose Piedra?

"Rob, I had my first Jose Piedra, a Cazadores on Sunday at the lake fishing Walleye. I have to say I enjoyed it a lot. Can you tell me what standouts there are in Jose Piedra and Quintero? I am not flushed with funds right now but have a mule heading to Cuba next month. I would like to bring one or two boxes back. Thank you in advance."

I had a phase of the Petit Cazadores as a yard 'gar, I think they were the best of the bunch. I still put Quintero way ahead, the Panetelas first and foremost if you like sweeter cigars. For a Robusto style experience, the Favoritos is pretty pleasant.

I used to fairly enjoy the JLP Petit Cazadores and the Quinteros Brevas.

In my honest opinion, JLP Petit Cazadores and Conservas are the best vitolas in the JLP portfolio.

As mentioned above...

For me it's the Quintero Brevas and Favouritos, and then the JLP Petit Cazadores. The best of the bunch, in my opinion and also handy as you have 3 versatile vitolas. I would go for those. If you can squeeze a box of Rafael Gonzales Perlas though, I would consider those. I think they are priced very cheaply in Cuba, and are hand rolled, long filler.

Quintero and JLP shouldn't be hard to find.

If you can find them, the Flor De Cano Petit Coronas are also a short filler, relatively inexpensive cigar that I have found enjoyable, albeit mild.

The Quintero Favoritos is a great cigar. Punches well above its weight. Toasty, nutty...lots of flavour from the first puff.

Hooray for the cheap and cheerfuls! I enjoy Flor de Rafael Gonzalez, really all of them but special kudos to the Panatelas Extra. The little Quintero are pretty banging too. I love Flor de Cano Elegidos as well. All super tasty everyday smokes, along with the JLPs. Wasn't the biggest fan of the Quintero Favoritas but mine probably just needs more age on it. Also don't sleep on the shorts and puritos, especially R y J puritos. Surprising amount of flavor in those short little snack sticks.

JLP uses tobacco from the Vuelta Arriba I believe. Doesn’t have the same terroir as Vuelta Abajo. I prefer Quintero for this reason.

I think the Cazadores & Petite Caballeros are the best from JLP.  Quinterro Favoritos & Panetelas are decent too.

I have yet to smoke a Quintero oddly. But I have smoked hundreds of JLP. Brevas are not bad. The Petit Cetros are my favorite. Good luck finding any. Great honest rustic cigars. Don't expect 90 pointers. But you might be surprised to find these to be pretty good. They are not for everyone. I like them while I am at work telling other people what to do.

RG are far and away better than any of these cheap and cheerful choices. I would say the Perlas holds its own with all of the best of them.

Do try the Quintero Panatela. I love RGs but those are such a tasty little snack stick with a year or two on them.

Completely agree! I had a HdM Palmas Extras on Saturday evening that absolutely blew me away. I'll have to check the box date/code but it hit a solid 94 in my book. Had a softness and complexity that was intoxicating.

That's been my experience.
