El Presidente Posted May 14 Posted May 14 EAR: Email Assistance Required "Hey Rob, could you run this member poll for me? I’m one of the pre-Cigarmageddon buyers of D4s back when they were around $260 USD a box. I absolutely love them and still think they’re one of the great everyday smokes ever made. But working here in New Orleans in a reasonably well paid admin job, I still can’t quite wrap my head around them being a $25–$30 cigar these days. Well, I suppose I can, given where the market has gone, but at that price they move firmly into “special occasion cigar” territory for me.Your Robusto Trinity has pretty much filled that regular-rotation robusto slot for me these days, along with a couple of other NCs. Curious what other members think. Appreciate if you could ask."

Agree that it has become, no it is now, a very limited smoke for me. I'm quarter of the way through a 2017 box. Slowed right down. Have a 2023 box waiting. Would grab one more. 4
ElLoboLoco Posted May 14 Posted May 14 It depends on your income, smoking cadence and pleasure it provides. 🤷♂️ It’s unique to the individual. But it is certainly inline with the premium priced Davidoff, Opus X pricing you bump into in the NC world. They maybe crazy too. Hahaha. 3
Popular Post Chibearsv Posted May 14 Popular Post Posted May 14 Not for me. Robustos should be $13-15 in my world. More if they are very good. $25-30 should offer a high likelihood of exceptional. 5
REesq Posted May 15 Posted May 15 Given that restaurant and food prices have pretty much doubled over the last few years, I have a lot less angst paying $30 for a D4 than $25+ for a basic non fast food burger which has also become the norm. 3
chasy Posted May 15 Posted May 15 I’ll still buy them because I love them. But I like them $15-$20 range. $18 seems fair. It seems as though a new price increase just came through in the last few days… 4
Popular Post Ford2112 Posted May 15 Popular Post Posted May 15 Nahhhh. Too many are inconsistent. 4 3
wooly Posted May 15 Posted May 15 Sadly this is the way most of the habanos portfolio is going. I love them, I keep buying them, but for how long who knows. Quite simply, they’re pricing themselves out of their own market segment and for the most part now, the product doesn’t match the price point. If the increase in price reflected in the quality or availability, maybe it would be easier to justify. 3
Popular Post Li Bai Posted May 15 Popular Post Posted May 15 I haven't been that lucky with D4s. Not a bad cigar by all means, but JL2s and BRCs have been better to me, so it's a no-brainer. 6 1
Popular Post JohnS Posted May 15 Popular Post Posted May 15 The Partagas Serie D No.4 has been really good to me post Covid-19 (i.e after 2020). So my opinion is thus biased, as I would probably buy more down-the-track when my supply starts to diminish. 7
Dadof3 Posted May 15 Posted May 15 At this point it seems all the CCs are overpriced. SD4 would seem to be less overpriced than some of them. 4
Lucas Buck Posted May 15 Posted May 15 I’m biased as I don’t like them so it is a no for me. However, I feel like the pricing is pretty close to the value you’re getting if you love these. Top line NC robos are 20+ these days. Even as a naive new Cuban smoker buying these for under ten bucks I knew they were a steal. If I loved D4s I would buy them at current pricing. 4
joeypots Posted May 15 Posted May 15 I've had fantastic D4s and some not so much. Recently I've had very good luck with them and it is a cigar that can smoke well young or with age. It's the same ol same old with Cuban cigars, with a high volume cigar the issue is am I buying a box that has been inspected and has made the cut or is it a grey market box that has been picked over and time and time again? If I have to have a Cuban cigar the D4 is a worthy contender. 3
JDoughty Posted May 15 Posted May 15 The price tag doesn't automatically scare me off, but the inconsistency at that price point does. 2
Popular Post El Presidente Posted May 15 Author Popular Post Posted May 15 $25-$26 is about as much as I am prepared to pay for a premium regular rotation cigar. Now in "premium" I am talking about a cigar consistently delivering 92 point utility with the occasional upside. The D4 does that for me. HOWEVER it is at the top of my Price/Satisfaction Index range. If you think of the Partagas Serie D4 as publicly listed company, then its shares are trading at the top of the Price to Earnings range. That price goes any higher and it would be a "sell". 9

Honestly this is how I look at it too. 5 years ago would I consider it a $25-$30 stick? Hell no. But to your point the dollar menu no longer exists. Lunch used to cost me $5, $7 tops if I got a drink and chips. Now? $15 easy. 4
Popular Post Goldeneye Posted May 16 Popular Post Posted May 16 I find questions like this very interesting and the perspectives thought provoking. A D4 at this price range seems reasonable for me but would never consider it a regular rotation cigar but rather a special occasion cigar. Would I pay this price for a special occasion? Absolutely...but not for a regular rotation. Everything is relative I guess and it depends on individual situations. For me pretty much every Cuban I have has become a special occasion smoke and some I will pay for like a D4 and other I won’t like a Reyes. 6
Popular Post Fugu Posted May 16 Popular Post Posted May 16 Leaving the price/value aspect aside, and I hate to “promote” it 😉, but (some) current/recent Tubos (24/25) have been out of this world good. Snag them up if you see them! Get a 3er first to check out if they’re for you. Difficult to answer with a clear yes/no. Having $9-D4s in the stash (among others), value is clearly a matter of personal perspective and stock keeping. If I had zero D4 in stock, would I be willing to pay $20-25? Probably yes for the occasional smoke. (Gaps in the rotation can always be filled with Favoritos.😄) That said, I am not expecting an ‘always’ 92 pointer from a D4. Heck, I’d be bound for disappointment if I did with a CORO let alone any “top” NC Robusto. 8
Boxer31 Posted May 16 Posted May 16 D4 was always in my top 10 (def higher with age). Slowed down smoking them - not paying 25-30 for a daily smoke (cc or nc). Have a few boxes to continue aging- yes I miss the <10 bucks. I have no choice when on vacation though. 3
BeerPimp Posted May 17 Posted May 17 This post reminds me to smoke a D4 again its been a while. I will definitely buy a box when I run out. I only smoke 1-2 cigars a week so while I wish the price was lower I will still be buying them. Also this post reminds me I need to purchase a 5 pack of the Robusto Trinity to check them out. Had a Canonazo N6 on Friday night that was absolutely amazing. 4
