EAR: Searching for a NC Siglo VI Replacement?

"I’m down to my last two Siglo VI, Rob, and I’m just not in a spot right now to jump back in and grab a full box. Truth is, I probably won’t be again.

I know it’s a big ask, but do you know of any non-Cuban in that 50–54 ring gauge range that can hang with a good Siglo VI, or at least come close? I’ve always loved that cigar and went pretty deep on them from ’04 through 2013. These days the stash is about tapped out, and I’m in a bit of a bind,but more than willing to explore and pay up for the right stick that can give me even a taste of what the Siglo VI has delivered over the years."

 

Over to you good people. Help the man out if you have any suggestions

My honest, unbiased and independent opinion on this, notwithstanding my role on our forum, is that the Puro Desnudo - Canonazo N6 is an excellent option if one likes the Cohiba Siglo VI.

I’ve had 2 Siglo VI in my life, both recently and both after having 10 of the Cañonazo. My reaction to each was, “Wow, this is a delightful interpretation of the Cañonazo, but damn it’s not comparatively worth the price at all.”

Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Presidente is similar size and will deliver a more luxuriant, medium bodied and somewhat Cubanesque flavours. Probably many similar approximations for size and general theme.

The real answer though, is probably to just apply the funds he would spend on NCs trying, and almost certainly failing (albeit potentially finding some new good smokes along the way), to find something like a Siglo VI and just buy Siglo VI in smaller amounts. He mentions not being able to buy a box now...maybe it needs to be a 3 pack a year smoke in his rotation now.

Fair enough. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, it was a cost issue and not a supply issue.

There are some custom and farm rolls that scratch the itch for me. Cost a fraction of current Sig VI prices and deliver that Cuban Cohiba-like experience.

Me too. Had a custom Mag 48 rolled in 2024 that was just fantastic yesterday afternoon on the deck. Interestingly the flavor profile was like a combo Por Larranaga & Partagas. Tremendous value when compared to the Sig VI.

This cigar won’t replace a Siglo VI but the Aladino Cameroon Super Toro will get you a surprisingly adequate replacement. This isn’t the answer you’re looking for, but I would buy Siglo II now, and again, it won’t replace the Siglo VI exactly, but will be similar. Maybe smoke them at the same time, a Siglo II and a Aladino… 🤔

   I get a bit too much funky barnyard from the young Canonazo to link it to the VI. I think the answer is that there is no perfect replacement but there are very good cigars, NW and Habanos, that can be had in that 6X50 or so vitola that'll scratch the itch if the expectation of a Cohiba substitute is abandoned. Size wise the Bond Roberts Petit 109 is pretty close and is getting better and better as it settles. 

   I smoked a lovely MCDE last week and was sad to be finished with it. I've smoked enough Cohiba to know how good they are but I don't compare every cigar to the best one I've ever smoked.

I have tried to like these but they just fall kind of flat for me. Great looking sticks, but I haven't been able to find that magic others reference.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t have a clue of where to find a custom or a farm roll. Would I like to? You bet. I suspect the person asking the question would have the same issue I have.

The Desnudos are great line of cigars. Same with Bond Roberts. Seems like an obvious choice. (It's like) Asking the Ford sales guy which brand car you should buy.

Yep mistake on the label there. Right sticks though! Maybe it’ll become a rare misprint collectors item! 😂

I would agree. Don’t make it a habit. Or try to go back to it.

I sometimes feel, when thinking back to my younger years, like I enjoyed cigars even more when it still was something special to me. While tight on the money, a celebrated moment I occasionally treated myself to.
