If so, that was good and I wish he would have done more work like that. Not only that, you wouldn't believe that it's Tom Cruise in this role (as movie executive Les Grossman) in his other scenes, only because he's so funny! I guess he wanted to prove that he could do comedy in a supporting role. I agree, we're unlikely to see him like this again... 4

Robert Downey Jr. absolutely crushed it. “Red Dragon. F*ck face. Southeast Asian is mine!” 4
joeypots Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Anyone who hasn't seen Tropic Thunder is missing out on great satire and comedy. And, for sure, the pretty boy steals the show. Robert Downey Jr has his moments as well. 2
chasy Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Robert Downey was so good that the fact that he was in black face (a 100% cancelable offense for the last decade) went completely unpoliced. Even the cancel culturers knew not to touch it! 2

Bill Hayes Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Don Cheadle in Mission to Mars. Just abysmal. Was a running joke at our place when searching through Netflix movies. Ha ha! And controversially, Michael Madsen. Was good in Reservoir Dogs but lucky Tarantino was loyal. Plays the same character every time, trying to add stilted timing to poignant lines so they can be used in trailers and teasers. Has a great distinctive look but lucky he has a great director and editor filming. Thankfully, he knows his place. Imagine if he had to hold a whole film together as a lead actor. Would be funny to watch though, like the guy from 90210 in Sharknado. 4

If it weren't for Hotel Rwanda, he would be really questionable. Apparently he was in a two horse race with Cuba Gooding for the star role, good for him for making it happen, considering he was up against an Academy Award winner. Mission to Mars is a classic though, love that film. 1
Li Bai Posted January 29 Posted January 29 There's actually another successful actor I just can't get, Tom Hiddleston. I don't even know if he's good or bad, I just never buy it when he's involved 🤔 1
chasy Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Maybe we should do a thread on Actors we think are awesome? 1 1

And they’re just annoying. 2

Great movie actors like Tom Hanks don't give off a vibe at all. They just are the character they are playing. Great actors don't look like they're acting. 2

Too often, these guys are "X as Y character" (even some of the greats like Jack Nicholson falls into this--he's always Jack Nicholson). But the BEST actors are just THE CHARACTER. Tom Hanks, Denzel, Daniel Day Lewis. Hell, I don't think she's the best in the world, but Jennifer Lawrence is like this, too (look at her in Winter's Bone and her in her later work and tell me they're the same person). So much of this, in my view, is the ever present desire in Hollywood to have "your brand." They want the role to serve them rather than doing what is needed to serve the work. /rant. 3

I just sit there watching and saying “That’s Nicholas Cage.” Nicholas Cage is a national treasure! How dare you! Hahahaha His characters are all uniquely "Nicholas Cage" 🤣
Namisgr11 Posted January 30 Posted January 30 While Nic Cage has overacted in a bunch of movies, I thought he was tremendous in Leaving Las Vegas. Also, his casting as John Madden in this upcoming bio from David O. Russell looks promising:
Ken Gargett Posted January 30 Posted January 30 so many qualify. as for cage, i liked him in the Rock. i think we forget that so often a poor performance relates back to the script or director. i think tom cruise gets a bad wrap. you know that at least he will give every role 100%. not really sure you would class seagal and van damme etc as actors. i need to stand up for tom hiddleston and benedich cumberbatch. seriously talented actors. toni colette. glad someone brought her up. does nothing for me. always remember when she announced that if john howard won the federal election then Australians would need to realise that she would never set foot in Australia again (a promise she has sadly not kept). he won in a landslide. i'm sure that was partly thanks to her. hard to imagine less interest in whether she came home or not. or a bigger ego to think anyone would care. a more controversial one for me is kate blanchet. occasionally i can see it. but almost every film she comes across as someone who is "acting", if that makes sense. and she seems to want it to be all about her, whatever is happening. someone mentioned remi malek. i've not seen the Queen film so may be being unfair, but he was truly the dullest villain in the entire bond series (dandruff second). dire. what was the director thinking? i'll give you one that fortunately, i think, has not been seen for a while. hayden christensen. how do you make darth vader about as threatening as a paper cut? dull, dull, dull. made arnie look like Olivier. 2
