Car recommendations? What will be your next one?

Time has come to changeover our SUV. 

I like a SUV for the reason that they are great for a weekend away and that my elderly parents can just "slide in" as opposed to "jumping up" in the 4x4 or "folding down" into the merc.

Your recommendations for a mid sized SUV/performance oriented.  Functional, stylish and something you look forward to driving 

 

Out of interest, what are you thinking will be your next car?

Assuming middle of the road prices, I'd recommend Volvo's SUV's. Not solely because I live in New England.

Reliable, well appointed, stylish, and safe. Neutral handling with decent to great acceleration depending on which engine.

Purchased a Chevrolet Tahoe High Country 4WD Friday.That’s what she wanted.I was pushing for Lexus SUV but caved.

I like my Volvo XC90 and honestly like the way it looks. Not a fancy car, but I’m pleased. I think the Genesis SUVs look good too. Wife had an Audi Q5 that was good (preferred to the BMW X3 that we replaced it with).

Next car (aspirational) is Audi RS6 Avant or BMW X5M.

Can’t beat the cayenne. I enjoy my Acura RDX, but it’s a little small. Work gave us some sort of VW Atlas cross something that we liked. I wonder if Oz gets the tourag still?

SUVs aren't really my cup of tea but if I was being forced I really love the look of the Volvo's, they have some fairly quick options but they seem to be hybrid which I would worry about being too complicated and destined to go wrong at some point.

I really like the look of the X3M and X5M, they have M car engines and are absolutely bonkers. But being fairly sensible, I'd go for the 3 litre diesel version. It's just one of the best engines, doesn't sound as good as a petrol but it's just incredibly smooth, has bags of power and is pretty good on the fuel too.

We have a 335d estate and I am running it into the ground as it's just too much fun for a family car.

Like @cnov, SUVs aren't my cup of tea either. For driving around in a congested big city, I'd say I would be opting for a electric, family-sized car at most.

I think everyone in your family & friends circle would benefit from you getting a Lexus LC 500. Very practical, unbeatable Lexus build quality, etc. There's really no down side. 

It'd be my next car if Grand Theft Auto (the felony, not the game) was not my only option of procuring one.

I liked my little Q3 I had for a while but like many have said the BMWs seem to have them licked. Driving an X4 recently and felt that was a nice step up. I'm in the process of trying to find something for Montreal (worst roads in North America) and ideally would go for a Prado but they don’t make them for this side of the road. Volvo is on the list and even looking at the shorty Defenders for something different. Not completely convinced on the other Toyotas in NA and the LCs are too big.

50/50 on ice/hybrid or fully electric too. Will be interesting to see what else is suggested here.

My wife loves her Genesis GV80 3.5L we just bought last week. It’s a really nice car. I thought too expensive when I saw the sticker, but I like it better than the GL350 she traded in. It drives nice, has some guts, and is tricked out with toys. I wouldn’t trade my X5 for it though. There’s just something special about how the BMWs drive, feel, and sound.

I have a Tahoe RST. It's the definition of a peak performance SUV and drives like a go kart (drives smaller than my prior Suburban and Yukon).

I'm not sure it fits what you are looking for but I am actually picking up a Lexus GX550 in a couple days. Fits my needs with off-roading capability, luxury, and a better powertrain than the 4 cylinder hybrid Toyota is running. It is a body on frame so maybe not the peak of comfort but perfect for my needs, still somewhat difficult to get at MSRP unfortunately, I've been patient with my local dealer and am looking forward to taking delivery after waiting for a few months.

I agree with many above. Take a look at the Tahoe/Yukon or Lexus GX. Our family has the Yukon and GX and love them both!

We got a Lexus RZ450e for almost a year and it’s amazing. Totally works for us. For your case though, absolutely not. The last 4 cars I bought have been Lexus (2 I’m using currently) and would never go elsewhere. I like their quality and reliability.

Completely disagree. The obvious choice is always a Land Rover. A Defender 110, an older Discovery 4 or any V8 Range Rover. Don't worry about "jumping-up" for our elderly folks. Press the hydraulics button to lower the ride height when stationary, as any vehicle worthy of royalty should do.

Cayenne's don't work beyond the house and the grocery store and Touaregs are now half-dead even in continental Europe.

Yes in America and maybe the Middle East, everywhere else in the world is rather sophisticated.

As the requirement is weekend getaways with family, the 110 is pretty much the only option, plus the 130 of course. But without passenger requirements, a V8 90 all the way.

Our Range Rover was problematic and depreciated like nobody's business. Would only lease it if I had to do it over. 

For full size SUV's I'm split between the Lexus LX and Lincoln Continental. Hard to be Toyota engineering and Lincoln just looks regal.

I was looking at Lincoln Aviator, Tahoe Duramax, Genesis Gv80. Needed new whip for baby (been driving 2013 VW golf TDI since 2019) Been waiting for a good deal and finally pulled the trigger last month Certified 2020 Ford Explorer ST 14,500 miles and can pull 5,600lbs. I use to work at Mercedes and I am performance oriented it compares to the Old Ford Lightning, GMC Typhoon & my Dad's '99 C43 AMG. With Tune, exhaust, and intake does low 12's in quarter mile. But in Australia there are some great Diesel SUV's I wished they offered in the states!!

I'm not an SUV guy, I prefer 2 door coupes. As much as I like ICE cars, my next will most likely be an EV.

If price is not an option, Lotus Eletre. Blistering speed, even Di will think twice about mashing her foot down on the pedal. If you get the R model, pay the extra for the carbon ceramic brakes. A Porsche Macan 4S if you feel like spending a little less, but still want to be pushed back into your seat when taking off.

If you want to spend under AUD150k, an Audi SQ6 e-tron or a budget friendly Polestar 4.

Hey I am a good driver  ....maybe not the best when a song comes on and I want to dance whilst driving

You'll think twice about mashing your foot down in an Eletre. 0-100kph in less than 3 seconds.

On the plus side, there is no engine noise to interrupt your tunes if you do want to dance whilst driving.
