Popular Post El Presidente Posted September 7, 2023 Popular Post Posted September 7, 2023 A US man has been arrested after attempting to "run to London" through the Atlantic Ocean in a homemade floating hamster wheel. The 44-year-old man from Florida was intercepted by the US Coast Guard about 100km from Tybee Island, in the US state of Georgia, on August 26. Reza Baluchi has tried to complete three similar voyages before, all of which were intercepted by the Coast Guard. The homemade vessel was built like a wheel with large inflated buoys propped around the outer rim. (Flagler County Sheriff’s Office) The homemade vessel was built like a wheel with large inflated buoys propped around the outer rim. Paddles are used to propel it forward, making the contraption revolve in the water. "Based on the condition of the vessel - which was afloat as a result of wiring and buoys - [US Coast Guard] officers determined Baluchi was conducting a manifestly unsafe voyage," the criminal complaint says BBC. Baluchi refused to step out of the contraption for three days and threatened to kill himself. He also claimed he had a bomb on board, according to the BBC. 3 4
Popular Post MrBirdman Posted September 7, 2023 Popular Post Posted September 7, 2023 While most crazy people are content to publish on social media, this guy goes out and lives it. Cheers! 🍺 4 2
BlueRidgeFly Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 “Florida Man…” When a headline starts with that, I drop what I’m doing 😀 Impressive that he got 70 miles out rolling that thing. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66733230 1
BrightonCorgi Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 I think he is more at the will of the current than his own propulsion. 1
Chibearsv Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 Apparently he's not aware of the cookie cutters. 1

Islandboy Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 I think the US has more than satisfied its due diligence in stopping this wing nut so many times...it’s time to let him have go at it, I say. 2
SirVantes Posted September 7, 2023 Posted September 7, 2023 Look, it's 4,143 miles/6,667 km from Tybee Island to London, and he's already done 100 km. Off the back of an envelope, a good kayaker can do 5 knots - so if he does the same speed without rest or sleep, he needs only 726 hours. Clearly that contraption contains enough food and water to last him the journey. Clearly. It's his life to risk - god knows we've heard that sentiment enough in the past few years. So the Coast Guard should lay off a citizen of the land of the free. It's when he gets to, say, Pantelleria off Sicily and their Coast Guard tries to push him back into the open ocean...then send in the carrier group. 1

That is so he can count how many rotations of the contraption it takes until it sinks in the Atlantic. 1
