El Presidente Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 Question for the FOH Optometrists Nice seeing you all ............. (couldn't help myself!) I need reading glasses. Many of us need reading glasses. Now I have prescription pairs of reading glasses and I have good quality 1.5 X magnification glasses purchased at various retail stores.........and I can't tell the difference between the two when I am reading with them. My annual optometrist/glasses salesmen appointment is coming up and they will try to flog me two pairs for $200 Oz. I can get the same utility with two quality pairs for $40 AUD. What am I missing? Are there real benenefits to prescription glasses for people who only need 1x5 magnification to read in poor light......or is this just a scam. Scam being defined as a profitable enterprise that I am not involved in.

My father is slightly worse and he buys cheap drugstore pairs partly because he loses them all the time. That’s my future 😉. They work just fine for him. He still has 20/20 far vision. I think the rule of thumb with spectacles is that if your eyes are getting strained or tired frequently while reading, you might need to change things up. Otherwise save the dough.

targa88 Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 Rob, I would suggest that it depends on the nature of your prescription. For example if you astigmatism - the lens does something in addition to the magnification - it will correct the curvature of the lens (inside your eye).

Tdm_86 Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 It depends entirely on your prescription. If there’s little to no astigmatism and your eyes still accommodate enough to where you can comfortably read, by all means just get some ready made readers. Nothing bad will come of it. If your eyes start feeling strained, or even with more power the focus isn’t there anymore, then it might be time for prescription glasses. 1
westg Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 Go and get it done right. 200 notes for clear vision for fooksake. And please lose the safety glass look you have going on in the reviews with Ken . 🤔😘
joeypots Posted May 5, 2023 Posted May 5, 2023 Why not have a wall of glasses to try and buy when one finds the pair that work well enough? The vision industry says that people will have the wrong glasses. The people pushing for try and buy say that good enough glasses will improve vision of countless people who won’t or can't pay anything like 200$ US or OZ.
