MoeFOH's Movie of the Week 🎥

Each week we're going to spotlight a movie... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite quotes, clips, memories... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us... :looking:

All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! :cigar:

PM me with suggestions if there's a movie you want to nominate for next week's discussion.

Week #40: Bad Santa

Moe says: Had to roll with this one in the lead-up to Xmas... Billy Bob/Xmas classic! :D

Bad Santa is a 2003 American Christmas black comedy film directed by Terry Zwigoff and written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. It stars Billy Bob Thornton, with a supporting cast of Tony Cox, Lauren Graham, Brett Kelly, Lauren Tom, John Ritter and Bernie Mac. It was Ritter's last live-action film appearance before his death on September 11, 2003; the film was dedicated to his memory. The Coen brothers are credited as executive producers. The film was released in the United States on November 26, 2003, and was screened out of competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. It received positive reviews and was a commercial success.

An unrated version was released on DVD on March 5, 2004, and on Blu-ray on November 20, 2007, as Bad(der) Santa. A director's cut DVD was released in November 2006; it features Zwigoff's cut of the film (including an audio commentary with him and the film's editor), which is three minutes shorter than the theatrical cut and ten minutes shorter than the unrated version. A sequel, Bad Santa 2, was released on November 23, 2016, and failed to match the critical and commercial success of the original.

Over to you!

How do you rate it out of 10? :perfect10:

Post up favourite clips, quotes, etc...

A compelling movie because we can all relate to Billy Bob Thornton's character at some point in our life's journey! :D

Billy Bob Thornton has never been more Billy Bob Thornton, in fact I don’t think he was acting - he was just being Billy Bob Thornton. In order to properly enjoy this movie - I’d recommend some warm homemade cookies, a fifth of jack, and a 24 pack of bud lights (all to be consumed during the runtime of 92 minutes). The cinematography is nothing to write about but I’ll write about it anyway: if Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back had a baby with The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas - it would be Bad Santa. Which makes sense considering the GREAT Jamie Anderson is the cinematographer for all three movies. All in all a 4/5 movie because who doesn’t want to see Billy Bob Thornton hang out with a dwarf, make raunchy jokes, and experience a few christmas miracles along the way.

My much loved MIL was the epitome of Irish Catholic class and dignity. The lady walked the talk. One Christmas she was with my wife and me and the three of us enjoyed a quiet holiday. Quiet except when we watched Bad Santa. That 85 year old gal laughed and laughed, and while she claimed it wasn’t "her kind of picture", she conceded it was the funniest movie she had seen in a very long time. I think Bad Santa is a very good comedy and my memories of my MIL busting a gut at BB Thornton and Bernie Mac make it a 10 in my book. And BTW, don’t we all want to rail at the incredible commercialism of Christmas? Bad Santa satirizes Christmas at the mall as well as anything I’ve ever seen .

This is the only movie ever to have a black elf, he's an actual dwarf, and he tells Santa "your soul is dogshit!"  Fantastic. 10/10
