MoeFOH's Movie of the Week 🎥

Each week we're going to spotlight a movie... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite quotes, clips, memories... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us... :looking:

All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! :cigar:

PM me with suggestions if there's a movie you want to nominate for next week's discussion.

Week #14: The Big Chill (1983)

One of my all time faves. Like very few others it's one movie that I rarely feel like not watching again. It has its flaws, sure... Kevin Kline's eulogy bit was pretty awful acting, and, you know, there's some cheesiness along the way, but overall it's a classic in my book of comedy/dramas and it examines that friendship reunion theme in a unique and compelling way. Great soundtrack, too. And a wonderful performance by Kevin Costner as a corpse - perhaps some of his best work. :D

Over to you...

How do you rate it? Favourite scenes?

Best moments?... etc, and so on... post 'em up!!

If you've seen it, give us your score out of 10!

Not going to lie, I've never seen the movie, but I couldn't make it through that trailer. Too cringe...

And I was born in 1983, so I've seen my share of 80s movies, some of which I liked.

I'll trust that the movie is less painful.

interesting. mates and i didn't see it as a chick flick at all. we all absolutely loved it. seen it many times. perhaps just 9/10 but that feels mean. but it does get a bit preachy at times.

brilliant cast. fabulous music. that scene with the stones' 'can't always get what you want' with the cars all off the funeral is a classic. when the music starts and they all just quietly smile to themselves.

has to be goldblum's best role.

some of the quotes i dug up -

[At Alex's wake]

Michael: Amazing tradition. They throw a great party for you on the one day they know you can't come.

Meg: The last time I spoke with Alex, we had a fight. I yelled at him.

Nick: That's probably why he killed himself... What was the argument about?

Meg: I told him he was wasting his life.

Karen: You'll never get this many people to come to my funeral.

Michael: Ohh, Karen, I'll come. And, you know... I'll bring a date.

Michael: That's the great thing about the outdoors, it's one giant toilet.

Michael: Harold, don't you have any other music , you know, from this century?

Harold: There is no other music, not in my house.

Michael: There's been a lot of terrific music in the last ten years.

Harold: Like what?

Michael: Are we the first ones up?

(you'd have to see it for this to be funny).

Never seen it. Never wanted to. I’ll rate it zero stars to balance @Ford2112’s review. 😁

Didn’t really get it when I saw it when I was in my teens. But now that I myself am in my mid 30’s, a lot of it rings true and is recognizable. Watched it some years ago and liked it. I remember it having a pretty great soundtrack too.

8/10
