Customs seizes four tonnes of undeclared cigars at West Port

PETALING JAYA: Over four tonnes of cigars with unpaid duties of at least RM3mil have been seized by the Customs Department in its largest seizure of tobacco products this year.

Federal Territory Customs Department assistant director-general Mohammad Sabri Saad said they received information about the case on Feb 28.

"A team of enforcement personnel checked a 6m container at West Port and found over 4.6 tonnes of cigars," he told reporters at the department headquarters on Wednesday (April 13).

Unpaid duty on the cigars came up to RM3.09mil, he added.

He said investigations revealed that the bill of lading on the shipment declared the cigars as "prayer items".

"The cigars were hidden behind rubber slippers in a bid to avoid detection," he added.

Rough math.

11.66 grams for a Robusto.

Take off 10%  for packaging.

Take off another 10%  for normal police enforcement exaggeration.

Roughly 245,000 Robusto sized cigars :D

245,000 cigars which must have a cost of less than the $730K duties or else it would have just been paid. That's $3/stick, so definitely not premium sticks.

Hidden behind rubber slippers....hmm, sounds like a Hawaiian was involved in the planning.

I was thinking along the same lines, Indonesian or Philippines cigars for the masses.

Can we now add "Grandads slippers". to the accepted FOH communities flavour wheel.    We can put it right next to "old ladies handbag"

you definitely meant to tag scott @Heels82

I was referring to the rubber slippers, not necessarily the scheme itself.  I know @Heels82 is the shady one of the triad.  You and I are just more fashion conscious. 🤣
