MoeFOH Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 MoeFOH's Movie of the Week 🎥 Each week we're going to spotlight a movie... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite quotes, clips, memories... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us... All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! PM me with suggestions if there's a movie you want to nominate for next week's discussion. Week #5: Lawrence Of Arabia. This week, we're looking at the 1962 film Lawrence Of Arabia. Directed by the legendary David Lean and starring Peter O'Toole in the title role, this film has long been regarded as a cinematic masterpiece. I have to say it takes a certain kind of mood to settle in for this and similarly for Lean's Doctor Zhivago but for me they both nail the sweeping saga like no other films... perhaps only Citizen Kane sits in the same class - Masterclass. When in the mood for such, Lawrence is hard to surpass. This film was suggested by @joeypots- Cheers! Over the upcoming Easter long weekend here, I feel another viewing is in order! Anyhow... Over to you... Have you seen it? Do you rate it? Why or why not? Best moments?... etc, and so on... post 'em up!! If you've seen it, give us your score out of 10! 3
JohnS Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 David Lean certainly had some memorable epics around this point of his career...The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago. This thread has prompted me to re-visit this film because after all, yes, it's a masterpiece. No major female characters, shooting on location in the desert for months, all travelling scenes are from left to right across the screen, Maurice Jarre's memorable score , the 3 hour and 42 minute length across two parts and Peter O'Toole being denied a Best Actor Oscar because of Gregory Peck's performance as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird are the things that stand out to me. I don't think this movie would be done the same way today but in it's time it did cost something like $US300 million or more in today's equivalent cost. 3
Chibearsv Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 Haven’t seen it in ages. Great movie but I think it’s 3.5 hours or so. This post is a great reminder to give it a watch one weekend when wife is out of town. Nice selection! 2
Nevrknow Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 One of my all time favs. It comes on and I clear my calendar. I remember being asked years ago my favorite parts. I said beginning to end. Rare for me to say something like that about a film. 3
RedLantern Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 A 10! Lots of good quotes - “I am a river to my people!” Oddly enough the first time I saw it was my senior year of high school, they put all us seniors in the auditorium for a few days while the underclassmen were taking some kind of standardized test I think. 3

So you were of those that went to the auditorium while we snuck out? 😂 1

Popular Post joeypots Posted April 13, 2022 Popular Post Posted April 13, 2022 Lesson learned. I could go on and on about this movie. The photography of the desert is some of the best ever in film. 6
Doctorossi Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 That Lawrence of Arabia was made is an absolute miracle and so is the movie, itself. It's among my personal top 20 and, out of 10, I'd give it 10 for sure. 2
Tdm_86 Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 A great movie, from a time when not everything was pre-cut and you had to think for yourself when watching. The scale of the whole undertaking, with a cast that wasn’t big stars at the time, amazing that it even happened. 2
