The cost dynamic with Cuba has definitely flipped.  A good Padron Anniversary, or Davididoff Millenium will set you back more than most Cohibas.  Opus are priced like Behikes, crazy.

Diamond Crowns, Illusiones, Hemingway’s, these are all examples of sticks not peppery at all.  I don’t particularly care for them, but they aren’t peppery.  I shouldn’t say that, the Illusiones are smokeable.

PG cigars aren't peppery at all, as far as I smoke them. But I stay with the original series. Their lanceros and petite coronas. Very floral at times, though my taste buds have changed so I note considerable umani in some which I fear is mildewy. And that's straight from the manufacturer.

Never Had a Fuente that's peppery.

While on vacation in Houston just about everything I tried was a bit peppery in some regards except the davidoffs.

The pepper bombs seem to be what folks enjoy these days. I compare it to that hot sauce fad- white dudes trying to one up each other with the most ridiculous concoction of sauce. Ugh

I smoked some of those ridiculous pepper bombs when I was learning the ropes in the cigar world.....my god, how do people find that tasty and enjoyable?

This has been a good thread, thanks for all who have contributed. I really wanted to see what others have experienced here. I have had some good NC's lately, but ,many of them plain sucked. Just not a lot of variation in flavors. The main standouts for me have been the Oliva Melanio and a Tatuaje which was strong but doable, and a few others. So far I'm not a fan of My Father,Padron(I had ONE 64 I liked),Drew Estates or LFD. The Olivas for the price point were the best of the bunch IMO.I will try some Davidoff again to see if I missed something, and Illusione. Thanks for the suggestions!

Had to come on and comment because I’ve been trying NCs lately to supplement (or rather extend) my CC collection.  I haven’t had NCs for many years so it’s been like starting over for me.  Anyway, I just had an Oliva Serie V Double Robusto that I couldn’t even get past the first 3rd.  The pepper and bite just burned my whole palate.  Waited an hour or so and tried a Padron Londres Maduro that is a bit more complex and flavorful, and just a little less peppery.

Now Tatuaje Miami on the other hand … one Especiales and I was scouring the internet to score two boxes.  That was a stick I could have sworn was Cuban!

that is the thing i can never seem to get away from with Ns, that dirty cardboard nasty finish/aftertaste.......initial flavor upon puff is good then its just the most foul tasting finish ......no matter what cigar it is i cant get past this

I agree. I started smoking NC's years back, as my palate has developed, I found that Maduro's and a lot of these full bodied NC's don't do it for me anymore. Bitter and harsh in the final third and a very chalky/muddy finish on the palate. I always say...what I don't like about CC's (bad draw) I can fix with a perfect draw or dry boxing. What I don't like about NC's (bad aftertaste) I can't fix.

Try an Oliva Melanio, nowhere near the same kind of peppery smack in the face, I actually like they for a change of pace.  I have some of the regular Serie V too and after about 4 years of sitting in my tupperware, they are smokeable.  Fresh they are definitely strong on the pepper blast

I thought I would resurrect this thread. I smoked a few Illusione erpernal l'excellence recently and with a bit of rest they were very enjoyable smokes. I aged smoked a Melanio after some rest in my humidor at a slightly lower RH and the same, very smooth, not all that peppery if you take your time. I'm off to purchase a couple Davidoffs at m,y local B&M later today . I'm going to sneak a Partagas D4 in to smoke in the lounge though 🤣.

What smokes in the NC world are grabbing your attention lately?

Oliva Melanio Figurado, AF Hemingway Signature, EP Carillo Encore Majestic, EP Carillo Pledge Prequel (as you and others have mentioned).  But even after enjoying one, I find myself wanting a CC.  Was fun to explore NCs for a couple years, but I'm done.  For me, nothing beats a good CC.

I'm at 95% CC myself these days . I just like the change of pace from time to time.

Yo that 👍

Curivari Buenaventura Lines (look no further)

Unbelievable price point, complexities, full flavors, incredibly inexpensive and sold in 10 ct boxes

All other Curivari lines are worth checking out and smoke like NC cigars 3-4x the price point.  To me these are super premium cigars being offered at a price well below their enjoyment and quality factor.

Others…

CLE Chele

Asylum 13 Medulla Oblongata Natural

Stolen Throne Call to Arms

Tatuaje Nuevitas Jibaro

These are a good place to start your journey…

All should be able to be found online for sub $10.

I've ordered some E.P Carrillo Pledge Prequel Robusto, La Ley (PC size) Zino (Toro) and Vegafina to give them a try. I'll give Tatuaje a try if I can find any.

I have also been keen to try Rocky Patels made by Hamlet, not sure if anyone has tried them and could share a review at some point.

I wanted to try the Angel's share from... Forgot the name, but they were an arm and a leg.

Chiming in now so sorry if I am repeating anything. The following are the mellowest (not the mildest, but the ones that balance complexity with a lack of assertive pepper) non cubans I smoke:

- Davidoff Grand Cru

- Davidoff Millennium

- Paul Garmirian Gourmet Series

- Patoro Gran Anejo Reserva

- Illusione Cruzado (touch of pepper but not overwhelming)

- Casdagli Traditional Grand Cafe Lancero

- A. Fuente Casa Cuba or Don Carlos

- Atabey, any size

- Xhaxhi Bobi Baba Jan

- Smoking Jacket "Henkie" blend

I’ve tried the Tabaquero from Hamlet. It was very good, but as I believe Rob has mentioned before, it’s very strong. Once it aged a bit it was more manageable and had better flavors. It’s been a little while but I remember coffee, pepper, earth, and chocolate. Lots of pepper early on, if memory serves, and then it becomes sweeter.

For those of you that regularly smoke both CC and NC, do you sometimes go for a spice bomb / peppery one because you want to smoke that specific profile?

For sure! I like a fuller body, intense smoke experience in the colder months, of which can only be found in NC's. A well blended cigar with a broadleaf wrapper goes a long way. Tatuaje, Dunbarton and Foundation I believe have some of the most complex profiles and are blended with passion and you can taste in the cigar, unlike the mass produced Olivia, AJ Fernandez, RP...

I'm with you. Curivari makes great stuff at a very fair price point for sure. Available on Cigar Page for very little.

I'm not sure passion is a flavor I'm looking for in a cigar.  [Insert Lewinski joke here] 😁

Surprised no one’s mentioned Nudies. They’re not Cuban, and they’re not pepper bombs at all.

I’ve also got an incoming box of God of Fire Carlito Diademas. While the Carlito blend is said to be the boldest of the line up, I don’t find them peppery, but rather rich in flavor and complex, even somewhat Bolivar-esque. I definitely prefer God of Fire over Opus X.

The beauty of Curivari cigars is that many are off the charts good and smoke 2-3x their price point.  Gloria de Leon, El Gran Rey, Reserva Limitada Cafe Noir, and a few others all bring it.  The Buenaventura Picadores is their value version at less than $5 per stick.
