So, a couple days ago I smoked a Don Carlos 80th Anniversario Personal Reserve, and it was extremely bitter the entire time.

It was in the same tupperdor, at the same rh as others I got at the same time, I have smoked several and they were great, and with no bitterness.

Anyone have a clue what was going on with this one?

Incorrect blend. Roller took a phone call/took his eyes off the ball.

Tainted by foreign substance

Your palate is out of whack. Seasonal change, onsetting illness etc.

Nope, normal pace. Lasted about 45 minutes

I can see a loose or tight roll or other construction issue, but it seems like it would be difficult to do something to make it so bitter

Ammonia?
Certainly didn't smell or taste any ammonia, and I got 5 of them all at the same time and have all been stored identically in the same tupperdor, and the others I have smoked recently have been great

Sometimes the tobacco Gods are just against you no matter what you do unfortunately. Could be anything from a list as long as your arm and even then, sometimes it just happens as at the end of the day, the things are a natural and handmade product from start to finish

If like you say all your setup looks good and the rest of the cigars were also good, I'd lean towards it just being one of those things and not pay much mind to it. Light up a different stick and sacrifice it to them pesky Gods

Yeah, posted this on several forums, and the general consensus seems to be that there are just too many possibilities and could simply have been a fluke.

All of them came from the same person, who I have complete faith in that they were stored properly, and would guess that they all came from the same box, but I dint know for sure.

Not a big deal, was just curious as I have never had this happen before and wanted to be sure that I wasn't the cause somehow.

I'm pretty confident the others will be back up to their usual stellar performance.

Was just a real let down as it was my first smoke of the day, and they are one of my favorite Don Carlos, so was just very disappointing

It's usually the cigar you've been saving for a special occasion too, or your very last cigar of your favourite brand that's a complete stinker, it's never a yard 'gar or something you don't care about

Lol, yeah very true.

I just recently arranged a trade for a PetfecDraw tool, and no sooner than we made the deal I started having most of my cigars having tight rolls and needing the tool to open them up, lol

Also I enjoy nearly every Cigar I have ever had to some extent so its rare I get one i don't like, but when I do its always my first smoke of the day which just kinda starts out my day on a bad note instead of being a great Cigar and starting off my day right.

That's why I don't smoke a new Cigar for my first of the day anymore. Now i smoke a well established with me Cigar instead to make it more likely to start my day on a high note

Happened a lot with my first foray into aged and Vintage Cigars.

Was generously gifted about a dozen Vintage ones that were U.S. made, Cuban tobacco smokes from the 40's and 50's and about 25 or so various aged Cubans ranging from 5 years to 20 years.

About half of them were bland and flavorless and very disappointing, especially since aged cc's are so highly prized and very well regarded by most people, so I always had very high expectations, only to be let down.

Was still a fun adventure and if nothing else, I learned that aged Cigars are just wasted on me.

I honestly didn't find them to be any better than recent production, just different.

So because of my experience I don't age any of my Cigars, and don't seek out any either and certainly wouldn't pay the premium price they command.

Learned that anything with more than 5 years of age is likely to be wasted on me.

The only exception being that for stronger, spicier and Cigars with a bite to them, a few years does make them more mellow and smoother and those are actually better than fresh ones.

I was hesitant about the tool after trying cigar pokers etc over the years and never having much luck with them. But I had a decent collection of plugged cigars so decided to chance it and it's a great piece of kit, I'd say 9/10 sticks are rescued by it now 👍

Yeah, I hear nothing but praise for them and my Modus II tool just isn't cutting it

The modus takes a different approach. I like both depending on what I think I need to do to fix it. But being in construction I’m a tool hoe. 😂

Sometimes what you ate prior to smoking the cigar can affect the outcome.
