i did get an email from the bank to resolve this. i got told to ring the very same number i started with. emailed back that i was not going through that circus and they could ring me. they did. and lo and behold, as soon as i had someone with half a clue, it all got sorted. and they were horrified at the advice their own bank was handing out. spare me.
