Popular Post CaptainQuintero Posted March 30, 2019 Popular Post Posted March 30, 2019 Grabbing a box of these was one of the results of the mass thoughtless deletions that HSA enacted around 15 years ago. It was obvious that a lot of amazing cigars were going to be cut for mostly no good reason. So a mad dash ensued where people tried to stock up as much as possible. I tried in vain to source boxes of Partagas Coronas and Petit Coronas but to no avail, luckily I managed to find some of these coronas by all but another name. It's a cool name too, a bit of class compared to the great lumps shoehorned into the naming process today. I decided to punch this one, the wrapper looked quite thin to didn't want to risk damaging it with a straight cut. I'm usually not a big fan of punching, I tend to find that the combustion suffers around half way, but let's see how it goes. Straight up it's a perfect drawing cigar, that slight pull that is exceptional when Cuba does it right. Lighting up and the first dozen puffs remind me why I do this, just bliss; nutmeg spiced cream, a dark almost blueberry hit that's very close to creme de cassis, tangy cola bean and an underlying hint of rich leather. The burn is a little wonky but I rushed lighting up, can't blame the results when you have a dodgy operator. Second third and a lot of that outstanding array of flavours from the outset have been replaced by the leather coming to the fore. It's deep, rich and sweet. A tangy cream keeps it company. There's the beginning of burn issues and again I'm back to my previous misgivings about punch cutters. It happens too often for it to be coincidence. Final third now and the leather has taken a back seat. It's mostly lightly sweetened cream with the occasional lilts of berry-fruit syrups. I'm finding myself in the rare territory of nubbing a cigar, I love first thirds, enjoy seconds and it's usually a toss up wether I really enjoy a final third. This however is excellent; not even a hint of any overly hot nature coming in. It's like an extended second third. It's a lovely smoke, none of that butterscotch side of Partagas like the Shorts or Lusitania, just a complete creamy fruit compote of a cigar. It just keeps getting more and more rich the further along it burns 94/100, an hour and a half long much needed relaxing journey 13 1
Richard peters Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Enjoyed your review, thanks. Makes you want a cigar.
99call Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 Lovely review.......agree with regards to the name. Astorias!....so much class..........now we have 'Herfing' and 'Walk in Humidor', it makes me want to cry. But some ten year old somewhere will buy them. 2
aphexafx Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 The entire Cuban cigar industry, if you can call it that, makes me want to cry. I'm sick of wishing and hoping and feeling disappointed every time a new release turns out to be another stupid petit robusto or another 55+ d*** stick. No, thanks. Now we're getting over-designed bling boxes to go with them. How embarrassing. Remember when cigars were just cigars and not trophies to brag about on Instagram? Thank you for your review of the Astorias, CQ. Yet another inaccessible cigar from the past, but a pleasure to enjoy it, if only vicariously. May the rest treat you as well.

CaptainQuintero Posted March 30, 2019 Author Posted March 30, 2019 I think I'm past the bitter phase of the deletions, they seem to have mostly stopped but really there isn't a huge amount of the 'at risk' cigars left, I'm just glad I managed to pick up the odd box before everything vanished. Naming, I still think the Black Prince is the best sounding cigar ever, they should have kept it in the Punch line just for the name alone. Bolivar has had some shockers in recent years, I won't spoil it but have a look at the last few years of regionals on www.cubancigarwebsite.com , great stuff! I think everything has its place, I know everyone hated the Andorran PL RE that came in a faux carbon fibre box and was called the RS Edition or something, but I really liked the look and idea! The only issue is balance; whacky releases are great if balanced with traditional so there's something for everyone. It looks like Cuba is slowly realigning if the Tainos re-release is anything to go by hopefully it's the start of giving everyone in the hobby something to get excited about, not just one section.

aphexafx Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 I applaud the UK distributor(s) for stepping up and ordering the Laguito No. 1 release. But £28/$36 would be well beyond my zone. I'm just not into that; they're just cigars. No judgement whatsoever, it's a personal thing. I hope they rock! I love the Monte No. 3 and the RyJ Cazzie. I'm nervous about both of them. I want Partagas and Bolivar coronas back as standard production. I would be happy as ****. Reading such high marks for previously standard coronas (even slightly short ones ?) makes me endlessly happy. Thanks again, dude! ???

Lotusguy Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 I've heard £28 banded aboutOuch. Can only hope that this price is with tax and that the tax-free guys actually get some (unlike the RA 225 which never appeared there).
CaptainQuintero Posted March 30, 2019 Author Posted March 30, 2019 I'd assume there's £3/4 either side as a margin of error, either way it's still a potential eye waterer

They're pretty good too, but I'm just not a fan of tubos (show up moldy, boxes are huge, hate de-tubing them, blah blah blah, in the end I just decide I'm OK with the PC lol) and they're getting harder to find. Out of five sources only one has them in stock at this point! Robustos did it. I blame robustos for killing the coronas. *shakes fist*
