Silverstix Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 What’s everyone’s experience with laying these down? I’ve smoked a few and really enjoyed them but I don’t know the vintage. I just bought a box from the 24:24 with a date of FEB 18. How long do these take to come into their own? Are they generally good to go after a year? Need longer? What do you guys think? Thanks!Tom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Cayman17 Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 The 24:24 listing says lay them down until “early 2019 and then don’t hold back.” Sounds good to me. I’ve got two HQ boxes resting myself.
RazorbackFan Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I picked up a HQ box of GEO MAY 2014 Magnum 46 from 24:24 about six months ago that are STILL too rough around the edges for my tastes. Might just be a one-off box, and I have no other experience with Mag 46 besides a few singles here and there. Hopefully these will settle in and refine before too long. Good tobacco, good construction, but still too much mongrel.

Yeah I saw that, but Rob also mentions 3-5 years. I know a lot of this is personal preference but I figure hey if I can get some different opinions it can’t hurt to give me an idea. I’m gonna wait a few months for them to settle before I try one anyway, at that point they’ll be about 8 months old. Also going to set aside a few for the long term and see what happens. Anybody have experience with these in the long term? I smoked a 10 year old HUSW last month and I’d kill to get that sweetness again! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Popular Post RijkdeGooier Posted June 30, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 30, 2018 From my own experience you have two options 1. Smoke em young like Rob indicated. They will be stronger and a little unrefined but good cigars 2. Lay-away as normally by year 2.5 they start turning and become less pleasant and soapy until about 5 years after boxing - then they become true H.Upmann with the distinct shortbread and some sweetness in evidence 8
Freddo Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Great info.H Upmann Magnum 46 is certainly on my wish list.
Silverstix Posted July 3, 2018 Author Posted July 3, 2018 can any of you fine gentlemen tell me what the dimensions are for the slide lid box?

Couldn't wait 5 years if I wanted to, but based on how good they're smoking right now, I don't see the need to wait. These sticks are damn good right now. 1

If you find a good box, they are worth the wait. My '13 box is now smoking divine. 1
Shaunster Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 Personally I find they need 3-5 years at least. Young they can be harsh and unpleasant for me. 1

Popular Post IanMcLean68 Posted July 5, 2018 Popular Post Posted July 5, 2018 You will definitely get just as many differing opinions on this topic as you will responses, one of the wonderful things about our collective hobby. In my honest assessment, The Mag46 is one of todays top 4 "agers". By that I mean they turn into something special at 5+ years. Mag46, for me, belongs in the same ranks as PLPC, PG898V, and HDM Des Dieux. You could add most Cohiba (at least the classic line), and other supreme agers, such as Sir Winston & Partagas Lusi, to that list, but for me, at 5+ years, these are the best things out of Cuba right now. Keep all of your ELs and REs, nothing beats these regular production cigars with 5 years on them. 7

It takes more than 30 days to acclimate a new box just to start. That's why, imho, you need a lot of cigars. I used to hear people refer to the cuban cigar obsession as the dark side. To have a good idea of the progression of maturity of the Mag 46 over 6 years you might buy two boxes and smoke one every 6 weeks or so. Then you'll know hat happens based on your own experience. Obviously, one needs patience and cigars to smoke between Mag 46s. 2
foursite12 Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 I agree with the consensus here that several years down does wonders for this cigar. GEO Ene 14s have recently started to bloom after the last few years of being completely out of sorts. 1

Now that I have developed a taste for CC's, I find myself in the (un)enviable? position of having a good amount of NC's to smoke through, which can keep me occupied while I bide time for my CC's to come along. There are also NC's which I enjoy and will be buying more of those as well, which will also help me to leave certain CC's untouched. Out of this new box from FEB 18, my plan is to smoke 1 per year and take some good notes. If I find myself really digging them 4-5 years from now, then I will have ~20 cigars left and I will smoke away
Silverstix Posted July 5, 2018 Author Posted July 5, 2018 I am now forever chasing that sweetness I got from a 10 year old HUSW last month 1

At least that's how I justify it in my head, and that's really all that matters, right? Well, I also have to justify it to my wife sometimes too.....ok I guess you're right, I'll watch my wallet lol 1
KavalanWhisky Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 It's a dangerous game we play, I put myself on a hiatus on ordering more cigars as I had run out of space in the wineador but now I seem to have pulled to trigger on more cigars. Must stop looking at 24:24. At least this means that I have a better chance to age the existing stock...
