Was gifted a Cuaba Salomones by my father! Opinions!

These are generally well received. Haven't heard much about recent production and for some reason this isn't a cigar that has a lot of feedback. What feedback there is has generally been good, as I say.

Recent Distinguidos have been excellent, not that that's much of an indicator but I think you'll likely find it a good smoke and maybe even a great smoke.

Haven't had any, but I'm interested in trying them. Seems like a nice cigar to have a 10er of lying around for when you want something big and out of the ordinary. I know the Distinguidos which is a hair smaller gets a lot of love.

Smoke it and I hope you're amazed!

While some may be hit or miss, I smoked a Cuaba Diadema at PJ Hajenius on Father's Day in 2011 that was fantastic.

I have a box from 2008 and one suggestion I have is to have your perfectdraw ready, or dry box it for about 4-5 days.

As for flavors, I like it. More mild and nutty with a little fruit. Reminds me of a larger HDM Elegnate with little less sweetness and initial kick.

leaving aside whether this cigar or not, i saw the review you put up. hugely admire the work that went into it and the care - way more than rob and i manage. and i would also note that having done wines for years, i know we all have our own styles, standards, assessments.

so this is not intended as anything critical in any way but i am very curious - you have 15 categories across the three sectors you establish. terrific detail. and each is marked out of five before a final score given out of ten. of the 15 categories, only 3 got a pass and then nothing better than 3/5. the rest all got lower than 50% if you like. now to me, that suggests a cigar that is a complete failure. yet your final score is 9/10. i have to ask, what am i missing here?

or are those scores merely reflecting the strength of each category so a 1/5 means very little of that evident? this would make more sense if that is what is intended.

Dear Ken,

Back when I did more reviewing I was also reading the reviews of others and talking a lot to the blenders both Cuban and non-Cuban. Although I really enjoyed the floral prose, there was very little available in terms of actual scoring of the strength of the various flavors. So after speaking to a few of the professionals, I decided to try my hand at actually scoring the presence of each flavor element on a scale of 1-5. So for example Montecristo (depending on the espresso or cappuchino wrapper) I'd expect a score for black coffee taste of 3/5 to 4/5 on that element. Younger cigars wouls invariably exhibit more white pepper, while older cigars would provide more sugars in their taste profile.

The final score reflects my own personal enjoyment of a cigar, heavily influenced towards the flavor side, since I care little about appearence, my smoking style usually ensures good burn and most construction errors can be corrected with a firm hand.

Does this answer your questions?

many thanks. it does, and it makes way more sense than my initial interpretation.
