mike74 Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I’d love to hear thoughts on how these stack up against each other...
Popular Post ElJavi76 Posted May 18, 2018 Popular Post Posted May 18, 2018 I would say the Mag is a milder cigar. It's quite smooth in its delivery. Very little in the sense of any spice even in the retrohale. A bit linear for me, but nobody will complain when you're getting a bunch of great smoke for 90 mins. The Connie A is much more complex than the 50. There's a touch more spice present here. More creaminess. More baking spices. I get more sweetness out of this one as well. From my experience, the flavors do progress and are more evident as you burn thru the cigar. Mag 50 = very nice latte at Starbucks Connie A = cappuccino at Le Sirenuse in Positano Take my thoughts with a grain of salt. The Connie A is my fav "everyday" reg prod cigar. Connie had me at first puff. Cheers 10 1

TheMonk Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Two of my favorite sticks, and consistently good these days. I somewhat agree with @ElJavi76 in terms of flavour, but I've also had some Mag50 boxes that have turned out to be more complex then some Connie As, TBH. Anyway, both are superb smokes IMO, and given the price point, the Mag50 can really be a great "everyday" cigar. If you like your cigars creamy and on the sweeter side, can't go wrong with either IMO. 3
Siberian Bear Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Mag 50 is good but sometimes you have to search for flavor nuances, not that it's not flavorful but I noticed I need to be alone and concentrate on a smoke to get the best out of Mag 50. Connie A is a different story, it's not "in your face" smoke but I enjoy it more than Mag 50 and it goes very well with a strong drink and a nice conversation with friends.
David88 Posted May 22, 2018 Posted May 22, 2018 Both are great cigars and favourites of mine. I would probably go with the Mag 50 over the Connie A (for now at least). I find them a bit lighter than the A and aged 50s have plenty of complexity to them. I think they’re a good warm weather smoke.
Gamehawker Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Anymore thoughts on the comparison of these two superb cigars?
99call Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 I think key to this comparison is reliability, or getting a good Mag 50. Don't think I've had a bad Connie A........but a good Mag 50 would be my preference. Only problem is, is that finding the right box of Mag 50 that can give you that SLRDC 'like' apricot/peach is reasonably rare. I've had quite a few ten boxes of Mag 50 that were perfectly enjoyable cigars, but when you get a good box, and the Upmann shortbread profile mixes with a buttery apricot.........well......thats the point to Connie A seems a bit obvious and linear. If I had to buy blind I would buy the Connie A every time. But for a truly special cigar, I would try and hunt down a high end box of Mag 50 2

rcarlson Posted September 2, 2018 Posted September 2, 2018 Connie A is the most consistent smoke I've had (recent Mag 46 coming in hot and heavy, though). That's a big deal in my book. The Russian Roulette of pulling a stick from a box I otherwise love starts to ruin my love of 'em over time. I say Connie A. Just finished a box. All but one mac-daddy. 1

I think it's a very generous and flavourful smoke, but my point was - 95% of of Connie A production are superior to 95% of Mag50 production..........but - the remaining 5% of the very best Mag 50 production, are superior (in my opinion) to 100% of Connie A production. Just my opinion 3
zjory Posted September 2, 2018 Posted September 2, 2018 Connie A by a mile for me. I like Mag 50s but don’t think they’re on the same level. Agree with much of what has been said flavor wise. I’d add construction is big for me. It’s not hard to find a 50 that is plugged or tunnels. Connies almost always burn perfectly. 2
dageshi Posted September 2, 2018 Posted September 2, 2018 I once had a Connie A which was by far and away the best cigar I've ever smoked, sadly I've never ever been able to get another that reached those heights. The Mag 50 is the only other cigar that got close to that experience, not as good, a distant second if you will, but still a damned good cigar. Thing is, I would say I generally prefer the average Mag 50 I've had over the average Connie A I've had, something about the silkyness from a good Mag 50 is sublime. In terms of putting my money where my mouth is, I have a single box of connie A's which I sample around 1 a year, but I buy at least a 10 box of mag 50 every year, so long as the draw is good they never let me down.

Just my opinion Well, yes. I do to some extent. But my "lol" was really the use of the term "obvious" to describe a cigar. It's just not a term that would occur to me from a critical standpoint outside of music, visual arts, comedy and liars. Please take no offense. None was intended.

All I had intended to mean was out of H Upmanns classic flavours, the Connie A I find to be limited. The ones it gives, are very very pronounced and very enjoyable, But in the final third, I always find myself thinking I which there was a bit of savoury kick like you'd get in a 46, No2, and RR.
cigarzfan Posted May 22, 2019 Posted May 22, 2019 Hi! This thread is about 1 year old, but looking for current comparisons. Connie A or Magnum 50?!?
