I'm glad that a box of 2010 Monte GE LE was one of my first purchases. Sad that I wasn't about to snag a box of the 1966. But since I have only had one LE and that was the Monte's they are my fav so far lol. But I have picked up a few other LE since then

The Monte Grande Edmundo was my first LE cigar.  Loved it so much I went long and ordered 5 boxes from an old Live from the Humidor here.  Imagine my surprise when 15 boxes showed up a few weeks later

2006 Cohiba Piramides. (very rich smoking cigar) 2011 Cohiba 1966 (same, rich flavours, complex) 2015 Raman Allones Club Allones. (Typical RA flavours on steroids)

Out of the LE's I have had, I would have to say the Montecristo 520 edicion limitada 2012 Robusto extra is the one that springs straight to mind for me

Well, I'm cherishing the last couple of sticks I have of PSD#3 EL from 2001, which may have been the first or one of the first ELs that came from Cuba. I only have a couple left now, and at the time they were expensive, but I would imagine at today's prices they're very likely completely out of reach of anyone but the millionaire investors.

Anyhow, it seems that pricing for any of the limited productions, from regionals to special releases like the Monte 80th or 520, and so on, are getting insanely expensive. Kudos to HSA and the communist minds that are creating this market, it seems to be working well for them and making them a lot of money. I just don't get why smokers are so eagerly bidding up the prices and paying such high premiums for these things. Perhaps some are swept up in the hype and euphoric reviews, but at two to three times the price of regular production cigars I have to ask;  are they really worth it?

As best as I can tell these so called "limited" or "regional" cigars are made from tobacco grown in fields where regular cigar tobacco comes from. Their blends seem similar if not identical to other regular production blends, albeit some of them may have been discontinued. And the cigars are rolled in the same factories as other regular cigars. So what accounts for the hefty premium? Is there perhaps a bit of placebo effect going on?

There was no third iteration; the two second iterations were the Partagas D3 and the Cohiba pyramid; there was only one Hoyo pyramid in 2003, the 2011 release was a SHORT pyramid, which was good but didn't have the class and richness of the 2003…

Poor choice of words on my part. I'm referring to different box dates and codes.  The first Hoyo pyramids to hit the market were much better than later ones. The first PSD#3 EL was more consistent over the time it was available.

I paid around $220 for a box of PSD3 in 2002. I was actually disappointed at the time. General consensus is that these have blossomed into classics.

FWIW, a box of these sold at auction in late 2012 for $1,050. I'd assume they'd be closer to $1,500 by now.

2001 was the 2nd set of LE releases. the first was 2000. they skipped 2002 - i've always thought that they simply got caught by surprise how popular the program was and were not ready to have it as an annual thing, but people in havana i've spoken with say not so. though they never gave me a plausible alternative theory.

and then every year from 2003 on.

Ken, when did it became a thing for some ELs to be released late (the year after actual official release year)?

Rob could pinpoint it, but as late as 2013 the ELs were being released in their stated year. I know for a fact that the Punch SdO2 and HdM Grand Epi were both available well before Q3 2013. In fact, I believe the 2014s were also available by Q3 2014, at least the Boli Super Coronas. I believe the Partagas Seleccion Privada and the Cohiba Robustos Supremos were hitting vendors very late in 2014. So my belief is the 2015 ELs were the first to be pushed to the following year.

Had to try the Short Piramides today and wasn't disappointed. Other than a too loose draw and a little uneven burning, it was very good. I don't think these need any more time. Reminded me of older Hoyos--very woody and toasted tobacco. Not very creamy but very smooth, and almost no trace of the "EL" forest floor character. I'd give it a 93 with the draw and construction issues but could have been a 94-95 otherwise. Wished it was longer.

Had one a couple of weeks ago. Still smoking beautifully. Slightly chocolaty goodness creeping in too.

You won't be disappointed (I hope!). It's loads of creamy chocolate. I did a review on this and posted it in the Review Board here. I'd link to it, but I'm on the mobile version of the site now.

Edit: Link to review.

I'm actually smoking one of these right now. I can echo everything said here, but I'm having the opposite draw problem...I just got into the last third, and the draw was *way* too tight for most of the second. It started out wonderfully, though!
