I just smoked a Montecristo slightly smaller than a churchill size Anejados tonight.  Started out good but got a little rough toward the end. Yet it still held its smokeability toward the last fourth of it.  'Could have smoked it all the way to the nub, as it never got THAT rough toward the end.  And I'm glad to see this release addressed here on the forum...also, "HI, GUY!!!! Long time, no see, huh, mon' ami!"

Considering aged cigars normally have no problems with ammonia, the is something extremely fishy about the programme :spotlight:

Touché; On the nail, Exactly what I was thinking Captain.

I have tried them all, don't care for any of them but that's just me, wish I did because there are some nice sizes made available

people in the industry have been shaking their heads on this program on lack of information, etc since release

I, as a sucker, bought them all too; the only one I think had value for me was the HyM stick. Only had one so far and it had a nice milk coffee taste to it I enjoyed a lot (hint hint). Was good 1st third thru last 3rd, burned nicely, good airflow, the works.

As for the others, well the Monte Churchill was okay, but not anywhere near the premium. The RyJ pyramid was the most disappointing. I feel ripped off.

Tried the hoyo last night, couldn't even get a pull on it as it was WAY to tight.  Snubbed it in the fire pit and called it a loss.

Smoked a Monte Churchill Anejados last night and enjoyed it tremendously. Great taste and thick thick viscid smoke, last third went out once but a totally enjoyable experience.

Regards.

To me, the LE's make more sense than the Anejados program.

Keep in mind the EL program was originally designed as a way to blow out inferior wrappers. This was only revealed when Simon Chase confirmed it in Dec. 2014.

HSA has never had any qualms about designing a program specifically as a way to liquidate sub-par tobacco. At least at that time there wasn't much if any premium pricing on them. I think the 2000 Partagas Piramides was listed at $170-180 at the time--pretty much in line with Monte 2.

I'll also say that I think the overall quality of ERs has improved greatly since the early days. 05-08 produced only a handful of winners. The ER program might have helped them blow out even more bad tobacco in the early days, particularly since 05 and 06 were not good years overall for CCs. Here's a few of halfwheel's and FOH reviews of some of the early ERs, and they are pitiful:

05 RA Eminencia

05 RA Seleccion Suprema

06 PL Lonsdale

06 RA Estupendos

07 ERDM Vikingos

07 VR Maestros

they were priced at $130! under the price of the better regular production smokes of the day. so a sort of anti-premium, until they discovered what they had.

surprised hearing that re inferior wrappers. i bought quite a lot of the early LEs (could afford them back then) and never had any issues with the wrappers.

Very interesting piece of info. People used to laugh when I stated that the EL maduro junk was a scam. No coincidence that all these double banded cigars seemed to come with fireproof H2000 wrappers. Since 2002, I’ve never spent any money on a single EL.... never will again.

Brief reminder... ;)

Still, that's not discounting (neither would I) that there haven't been some spectacular ELs coming out of that program!

The wrapper adds only so much (but can spoil so much more....).

Before the fire, I was lucky enough to sample every release of the Anejado line. While sharing an HDM with a friend, we both looked at each other and said "Do you just taste dirt?" We quickly tossed those and chose a Party Conisuer #2 from 03. No disappointment there! I've yet to smoke an Anejado that beats any regular production stick from 07-08. To me, this program was a total failure.

Absolutely. The program was designed to blow out inferior wrappers (which really weren't that bad IMO, excepting the fireproof ones that persisted into 07 culminating with the Hoyo Regalos). The filler on many of the ELs was great. The 2000 PP, 01 CP, 01 PSD3, 03 RyJ H1 were all fantastic cigars.

I've not had any untill the other week and had the upmann Robusto...which I think was fantastic. Can't say anything about the other ones.

I think the expectation was they were going to take a Fuente Opus X or Drew Estates Liga Privada route, by instituting aging and quality steps.  A special project of sorts.  I think the perception is that this is what they should be doing for every cigar that leaves the factory and it shouldn't come with an extra price tag and second band. NCs have a much higher build and sort quality these days.  That wasn't always the case.

I THINK I've tried them all and the ONLY one that is a stand out is the Partagas.  My wife actually says it's the only one she really likes and it has no "bite" like so many other newer smokes.  This says a lot coming from a sorta newbie perspective and if she's happy, I'm HAPPY to buy more CC's! :D
