Prince dead at 57

US singer and musician Prince has reportedly passed away at the age of 57.

PRINCE has died at the age of 57.

TMZ is reporting the singers body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early Thursday morning.

A fatality was reported at the estate and authorities responded to a medical emergency at 9.43am, according to TMZ, but did not immediately identify the deceased. A publicist subsequently confirmed Princes death to the Associated Press

The pop icon was hospitalised on April 15 after his private jet was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Illinois, just hours after a performance in Atlanta. A representative for Prince told TMZ at the time that he had been suffering from the flu for several weeks.

The award-winning singer, songwriter and actor born Prince Rogers Nelson famously changed his stage name to a symbol in 1993.

In his lifetime, the Purple Rain singer won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.

More to come ...

Folks here in Minneapolis are in shock. First Avenue, the night club that Prince played throughout his career, is already loading up with flowers and candles. It always amazes me how quickly news gets spread around the world.

very sad. was happy to see him last month at a warriors game. provided a lot of the soundtrack to the 1980s and will be missed...

Some more Prince I like.

Everlasting Now on Jay Leno. Great funk tune. Really tight band and great guitar again.

With Cee-lo. Poor quality but worth a look for Prince's entrance.

I saw the real Prince on a show called New Girl (I think a year or so ago) and at one point he asked one of the characters if they would join him for pancakes! Dude had a great sense of humor!

Well my friend, anyone who would allegedly have parts of their anatomy removed to enable self-fellatio must have a sense of humour. Whether that rumour is true or not, who cares, the guy was a larger than life character who will be sorely missed. He was a renegade and true to himself. They don't make 'em like they used to. I'm kinda envious thinking of what's going on in Valhalla, with Prince, Bowie, Merle Haggard and ****in' Lemmy jammin' up there. If Keith Richards checks out in 2016 then I might be tempted to cash out early myself ;)

I went to see Prince twice when he toured Australia in 2011, and then again when he was here in February. Each show upped the ante for best concert I'd ever seen, particularly the last one, which was a sold out solo show in the round at the opera house with no band, just Prince and a piano. Transcendentally great musician. Huge loss.

This was a shocker! I was a teenager back in the 80's and a lot of his music brings back many memories. I know he was a bit eccentric but he was an amazing talent and an incredible song writer.

It seems surreal Alex, especially as we were talking about how good that concert was in February when you were up in Sydney this year. I'm glad you saw him one last time.

I will say one of the best Super Bowl halftime performances ever, maybe the best. I'm not a huge Prince fan either but I was impressed. (Maybe the rain added something?)
