suggs Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Greetings, all! I'm usually not one for pairing cigars with any sort of drink (except for coffee when I'm grading papers or writing), but I sometimes find myself wanting to have a nice beer when I'm smoking cigars. The trouble is, I can do this with non-Cubans perfectly well--because I think a lot of beer either pairs nicely with a lot of Nicaraguan earthiness, or serves to balance some of the pepper bombs--but I find myself struggling a bit when pairing Cubans with beer. I've never really thought, "wow, this CC would go particularly well with a beer." Any suggestions on styles of beers that go well with different marcas or blends?
busdriver Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I am an IPA lover but they do not pair well with cigars IMO. I often drink them with cigars since i love both independently but they dont ehance one another for me. I prefer belgium style beers paired with cigars. 3
brschoppe Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Amber Ale (Yuengling or something similar) to the red wrapper of PSD4. Guinness has always paired well with heavier cigars for me. 3
ethernomad Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Bourbon...oh, sorry. Try a stout if you like the bitter coffee pairing. Try a wheat if you like a sweeter creamy pairing. 1
brschoppe Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I am an IPA lover but they do not pair well with cigars IMO. I definitely agree! IPA and cigars do not go together. Any kind hoppy beer and cigars do not pair well.
Ken Gargett Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 no spoilers, but a very timely post considering the pairings in the next couple of videos. 1
ElPuro Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I agree IPAs are not recommended. The heavy hops bring out bitterness. I think it depends on the stick. Heavy, spicy sticks can do well with red wines or darker, malty beers. Generally want to go a bit lighter with more mild cigars or the drink overwhelms the smoke. But I am no expert. I usually defer to cabernet sauvignon but will switch mid stick if it isn't working right.
Bill Hayes Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I find the more bitter beers don't work too well with CC's. I love stout but some of the more powerful Imperial stouts I find dominate too much. So I go for a sweeter stout, coffee infused stout or a vanilla porter. I have found they go OK with Partagas. For cigars with a lighter, hay, wood profile and sometimes even Cohiba I find that German Heffeweissen wheat beer works well. The darker Dunkel wheat beer can also work I've found when you want to encourage some sweetness from a cigar. I think Pale Ale, Pilsner and IPA can be too bitter for my liking to be paired with a cigar, even though I love them. I haven't yet tried English or Irish Ale as yet with a cigar. Boddingtons, Tetley's, Kilkenny might go OK with cigars with a creamier profile I imagine. But I'd think that Guiness might be a touch bitter perhaps. Anyway all the best. 2
SofaKing Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I opt for something like a Wit/Belgian white, something with cream and citrus note in the warmer months. In the winter a nice porter with roasted nutty or coffee undertones. IPA's are an overpowering disaster. 1
suggs Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Agreed all-around about IPAs and really hoppy beers. I really like a good stout but, as some of you all have said, I find that the drink overpowers the cigar. I'll definitely try the Belgian/Trappist beers, though. That sounds like it has some good potential! Thanks for the comments and suggestions, all!
DropTopDee Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Belgium tripels or lighter porters and stouts work for me. 1
archosaur Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I love beer, but I too am a hophead that can't make a good match between hoppy beer and cigars. The best beer/cigar experiences for me have generally been with malty (but not too strong) German lagers like a bock or a marzen (Octoberfest).
FHFinster Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Amber Ale (Yuengling or something similar) to the red wrapper of PSD4. Guinness has always paired well with heavier cigars for me. Agree, Guiness with the deepest darkest NC for me. Cubans with whiskey. 1
MIKA27 Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I love a Peroni with most Cuban cigars. It's not an over powering beer, rather crisp and fresh. Also love a nice Sierra Nevada Porter with my NC's mainly because they can be medium to full but this beer also goes well with a VR Unicos or a BBF.
Jeremy Festa Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 My favourites are the Stone and Wood Pacific Ale and Jasper Ale. Also the Estrella Damm Inedit. And I have a penchant for the more obscure Italian beers of late! Sent from my iPhone
khamy Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Stone and Wood is good. Little Creatures is good Coopers is good White Rabbit is good even Sierra Nevada is good. Face it i just like Pale Ale so the cigar will just have to just sit there quietly and like it. 2
Rye Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I like beer I like cigars Both at once puts me in a happy place, but my choices on both changes with the weather. Thicker malty brews when it's cold out, light and crisp cervesa when it's hot. I really love a good local DIPA with most medium & up strength Habanos as the floral hoppy notes in many beers really gets accentuated when paired with a rested Parti 898 or the like. I try to drink local and seasonal brews so I'm not going to get into too many specifics. 1
dicko Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I'm not a beer expert but to my taste other beverages are better suited to cigars sparkling red wine is my favourite drink pairing followed closely by rum and coffee
CaptainQuintero Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Any real ales go amazingly well, so anything fizzy (Not beer anyway) is best avoided from my experience.
drunkbuckeye Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I normally don't drink ipa unless it's with a cigar on non liquor days. The Hoppier the better
Franko Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I've been the same way, recently had a Octuber fest, that was good with my Habano.. Recommend....
yhomas Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I like variety in this area, but Mexican beer serves this purpose well--Cerveza Pacífico Clara, Victoria, etc.).
HarveyBoulevard Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Easiest thread answer ever... Somehow matches any marca and any vitola at any time! 3
