JohnS Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Smoked a medio this week. Nice, but wouldn't buy any. The value just isn't there. Likewise, I've had a few to sample now and while I don't mind them, I don't reach for them, like I would a Montecristo No.4 or 5 1
canadianbeaver Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Matthew and I are blasting through our box of Medios. They are awesome! Tons of coffe cake flavour but most of all lots of puffballs of smoke which I love. I like this size smoke if it is sunny out and freezing cold. This cigar is a winner 4
RijkdeGooier Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Like em both. Smoked both yesterday and today again to revisit. Monte 5 - 2013. A more subtle blend Media Corona - Jun 2015, one of the first boxes, showed more power. The difference in ring guage really makes a big difference to me. Rather like a Monte 3/1 vs a Monte 2. 1
dangolf18 Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Blend is better in the Medio...better flavors and more refined imo.
riazp Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 thanks for the input on these. i'll be looking to try them out in the near future to see how they are vs the HUHC which I love.
CdnLimitada Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Love the Monte 5. Haven't tried the Medio. What I like most about the 5 is that it's a mild to med strength. Seems most think that the Medio is stronger? If so I don't have a "strong" desire to try it and thus no effect on MC5 sales on my end.
RijkdeGooier Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 Medio is indeed fuller - mainly due to it's larger ring gauge IMO.
zeedubbya Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 There's always gonna be Monte 5 loyalists like myself It would seem. So I don't think the Media will steal all of its market, but it will most assuredly steal some. I wouldn't be thrilled if Monte 5 was discontinued, but I don't see the big problem? If HSA wants to try and market a different option in this size then I'm sure it's nothing more than marketing at work. If Monte 5 was suffering declining sales (likely more to the trend of larger RG cigars) then putting out something new is simply good marketing. Why not do a review with Ken of both cigars? I seem to recall his fondness for the HUHC.... 2
JoeyW Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I m a small cigar type of guy. Monty is my favorite blend and #5 is my favorite. That been said, i love the media corona too , both are very different to me. The size , the taste, the blend . To me , there is no fight in between both. I got about 100 of each in my humidor and will keep buying both . 1
Edwhatever Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 I wonder how many who voted actually tried the Medio
CigarSeeker Posted April 5, 2016 Posted April 5, 2016 I have tried and have a box of the Monte 5 and I think they are great ... I haven't tried the medio yet but have a box on the way that will need to sit for a bit before I try. A friend of mine has a box and will be trying them shortly. According to him the medio has better defined flavors but I'm not sure how one can judge when they are fairly new and hardly have any age on them. My vote goes for the 5 since I haven't tried the medio yet.
Smokin911 Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 Bumping this thread to get some more updated opinions. The Monte 5 is a favorite of mine when I want a 30-40 minute smoke. Have not tried the medio yet: need to get a box so I'll watch for it on 24:24 sales.
backbone Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 I have smoked through a couple of boxes of the Medio, and they are very good. Very good construction and burn. Very consistent. Typical Monte flavors with a 20-30 min duration. Its great when its 98 in the shade or to back up a stick that has let you down. 1
garbandz Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 tried several different sources of the Medio, prefer the Monte 5.........
soutso Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 The 5 is essentially my favourite cigar. My only criticism is that I wish it was a little longer (dangerous territory here....) I've had the Media Corona and found the ones I've smoked thus far to be great little sticks, though once again I wish it they were longer (a common theme?) The 5 leaves you wanting a little more, the MC leaves you needing more. I'll stick with the 5. 1
busdriver Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 The 4 or 5 medio that I have had needed some time down, the Monte 5 still gets my vote!
NSXCIGAR Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 The Monte 5 is a special cigar when it's on. I agree, they are just not long enough for me anymore. They are really too good to be as short as they are, and it's become a little frustrating over the years. I have a hard time buying them. I know it's odd, but I just think I'm putting my money into an "incomplete" cigar that leaves me wanting more and frustrated. Perlas (and Minutos to a lesser degree) have been killing me in the last few years. Again, not that I wouldn't smoke one (or many), but it's really tough to commit money to this cigar when I have other options. The MC can be very good, but I have yet to smoke one as good as excellent Monte 5s. And the vitola is annoying for me. Perhaps the vitola is more popular, and therefore the MC is biting into Monte 5 sales and becoming popular, but I think the Monte 5 is a superior blend. And I'm sure I would feel the same way about the Half Corona vitola as I do about Perlas if it were good. These cigars have about the same burning time--perhaps shorter for the HC. I have the same issues with the Boli Tubos No. 3. Possibly the best Boli in production, but it's hard to enjoy the experience it's such a darn small vitola. And at over $4/stick, it's a very tough buy for me. My vote goes to the Monte 5.
Winchester21 Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 I only buy the Monte 5 when it is highly rated on 24/24 or similar market platform. If Hq/psp or highly rated hand picked I will place an order but never my first choice i have had 1 box of the medio coronas and it was one of the best Montes so far this year. At this point I would buy 5-1 over the 5. Please put more of these up for sale. The box I bought was from 24/24 and was largely ignored that day which is unusual for any Monte on 24/24 I missed some other choices that day and placed the order as an afterthought because I still had cash to spend. I was thrilled when the box arrived and I sampled a couple. IMHO the very best standard ring gauge short cigar in my collection of many others that size. I certainly hope that this one is a regular offering Ss for the Monte 5 I can take it or leave It particulary if higher priced. However judging from the other opinions expressed here , I don't think that the medio will effect 5 sales one way or another
Cold Smoke Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 I'd stick with the Montecristo No.5 as it has been my standard go-to smoke for years.
MahDooRow Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 I've tried the HUHC (and am a huge fan of H. Upmann) and I did not like the format. Too short! For that reason alone I would much rather smoke a Monte #5 and save $20. Personally, I don't understand (nor do I like) the recent cigar trends in size/format. Super fat cigars and super short cigars are just not my cup of tea. 1
Danimalia Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 As someone who in the best of times has a pretty limited amount of coin to drop on cigars, and as someone who has not had either cigar, here are my thoughts: All things equal, I'd prefer a 44 rg smoke to a 40. But in practice, I have not found ring gauge to offer the value in smoking duration that length offers. I haven't had either cigar, but I suspect the #5 smokes just as long, if not longer than the Media. If the Media were a 4x44, I'd be much more inclined to shell out an extra 20 for it. But at 3.5", it's a hard sell. Really, any 3.5" cigar is going to be a hard sell for me, unless the price is excellent. So if I were looking for a small Monte, I'd go with the #5, and save the $20.
blank Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 monte medio creamy richness & spice lovely. also enjoying Cohiba Siglo Medio, finally a Siglo with some bite to it. Its like they took a full size Siglo & packed the Ligero & seco into two thirds Think of these two cigars as the better two thirds of full size Vitola.
Winchester21 Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 Based on the results the Monte5 is the clear winner. It will be interesting to see if the medio survives over the long term. It also looks like I have had bad luck with the 5s given the lack of construction issues mentioned that I have encountered In any case I would pay the extra 20 dollars as money would not be a big issue at this price point for me. I smoked another of each after reading these posts and I still prefer the medio. As for my examples the medio produced a higher volume of smoke and was a more full body taste profile. That is why I like it. A little powerhouse
