Was too curious about the Bolivar RCs I just picked up on special here to not try one when they arrived. The ULA Box Code seemed pretty popular on one of the polls, so that also piqued my curiosity.

Rob and the team always nail the HQ boxes, so construction and color are spot on. Two really gorgeous boxes of cigars. Reminds me of the really nice MUR '12, but a bit lighter.

This isn't a cigar I usually smoke so early, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results!

Flavors in the 1st third remind me of a RASS. Getting some mild spice, rich tobacco, and a bit of stewed fruit. It's not nearly as balanced or smooth as an older Boli RC, but it's certainly very smokable!

Second third is very Bolivar to me. More citrus and spice and dark tobacco. Still smokable, but more of a punch than I prefer. Reminds me of a bit of a young Boli PC at this point.

Final third is straight tobacco and spice. Pretty unrefined at this point, unsurprisingly, but not nearly as much of a handful as I expected.

So right off the truck? Maybe an 85-87? Heck of a cigar without any rest on it though.

Sounds just like the BRC from the blind tasting. 85-87 sounds low to me... ok.gif

I always allow my curiosity to get the best of me and have one right there right of the truck :)

ULA RASCC, BJC both were fantastic rott.

Haven't figured out why, but they tend to suffer the ill effects of downtime after they're introduced to my humidor rather than on arrival

Had to try an RyJ Churchill MUO JUL14 on arrival based on reputation. Was pretty good ROTT, smooth throughout.

Will revisit in a few weeks.

I smoked an ABR14 Superiores this afternoon that I'd had sealed in saran wrap since I got the box. Probably should have let them air out and acclimate a bit beforehand as it seemed wet and finished harsh. The rest will breathe for a few weeks before I rewrap them.

This happens to me quite frequently as well. Last one ROTT was a Siglo II (BTO NOV12) from a recent 24:24 HP clearance.

First two-thirds were fantastic (honey, cream, hay galore). Flavors were much more muted on the last third, which hopefully a bit of time will correct.

Going to give another one a try in the next couple weeks.

I almost smoke a cigar out of every box I receive ROTT then another after about 30 days humidor time. Last one I smoked ROTT was an RA Supe and it was a good cigar maybe a 90.

Unless El Presidente says lay em down I almost always try one the day they arrive. The exception being when the box has been in the post for more than 7 to 10 days.

Same here. The last one I had a San Cristobal de La Habana El Principe which I enjoyed very much, nubbed it in fact. Easily a 90 point cigar ROTT!

I'm almost always disappointed smoking ROTT. I won't do it anymore. I have enough other things to smoke in the meantime while I wait it out.

Never smoke 'em ROTT. Always give 'em at least two week nap before trying first stick. Generally don't dig in very heavy until first birthday.

I usually try one ROTT unless there were some shipping complications that may have messed with them too much. In some instances it seems to have served well as a prolonged dryboxing period, other times I regret doing it. Either way, I'm likely to continue doing it.

Yup I am not a ROTT guy....hot here in summer and sitting on the truck can play crazy with them. I generally let em settle at least a month.

Same here. Never so far. But I tend to wait till the 2nd Bday before jump on a box...

I too am always disappointed by any cigars I've smoked ROTT, but then I stopped doing this awhile ago and from what I've heard, cigars seem to be more approachable today than they were 5-6 years ago.

One of the big reasons I don't smoke ROTT is because once I pull a cigar out of a box, it is no longer a full box. With a dress box this means the cigars are not tightly pressed together anymore, letting the cigars roll around and exposing them to more air circulation thus affecting the aging of the cigar in a negative way in my opinion. With a cabinet there are now not as many cigars in the cab, again allowing more air circulation thus not aging as gracefully.

But the biggest reason I don't tap into a new box is because of the mental aspect it involves. Once a cigar is removed from a new or full box, because it is no longer full and tightly packed, it 7s that much easier to grab another cigar then another and before you know it, you only have 10 cigars left. Then, to me, there is no point in aging them any further as they're not going to age to my liking plus the half empty cabinet or dressbox is now taking up precious real estate in my humidor.

Another reason I don't smoke ROTT is because more often than not, the cigars are a little drier than I like to smoke them at. Being that I get all of my cigars from either Havana House (Canadian regional distributor) or Hunters and Frankau (English regional distributor), the cigars are drier because tobacco is taxed by weight in these countries and from what I've been told, it saves them a considerable amount of money in taxation by having the cigars imported in a drier state, cutting down considerably the total weight of mastercases. I like my cigars conditioned at 65% through and through and from myrh readings taken on recently recieved cigars, they seem to all have an rh of 58-60% and it takes around 3 to 4 months for an entire box to become conditioned or reach equilibrium at 65% rh from the original 58-60%rh.

Yeah I'm with you there. The ULA '14 BRC have been justifiably lauded in recent times and for my tastes, subjective of course, have been 89/90 smokes in the main.....I suppose that I'd be interested in how they'd be given 2-3 years down but, frankly, they're not going to live anywhere near that long unless they hit a sick patch.

Definitely your opinion but I doubt this would have little to any effect on the cigars from just pulling one out.

I feel the same way sometimes lol but sometimes it just has to be done.

H. Upmann Connie A ... that was a 90 cigar ROTT for me. They've improved over the 9 months with a lot of potential for more ... I need another box soon so that I can set some of this box asside to age, lol.

I just recently started getting back into CCs so I'm pretty much stuck with ROTT until I build up enough inventory to let them sit.
