Ken Gargett Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Do not forget all african and american people and countries they slaved and sucked. far be it from me to ever be seen defending the poms (love that the windies have them 5-39 overnight) but they were hardly alone. and in many respects, far from the most brutal and tyrannical. have a look at what belgium did in africa. horrendous. that is not to justify the brits. even in the mid 80s when i went through many parts of africa, you could divide the villages between those who were friendly and welcoming and fun - and those which were antagonistic, sometimes actually violent. the division was exactly the same as which villages had been visited by the french foreign legion/troops/whatever they called themselves, and those which had not. and as belated as it might have been, the brits were fairly instrumental in ending the slave trade.
westg Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Ken your like royalty around here ...I think Kendra would be a good name.... 1
canadianbeaver Posted May 3, 2015 Author Posted May 3, 2015 Ken, for a guy who puts out a thread about Bruce Stringbean once a month, leave this thread alone. Pipe down in my threads about that nasty stuff. ;-) Name the baby and have at it my love. 1

If anything he was being the voice of balance.
Smallclub Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 This thread is the most historically misinformed ever posted here. I don't know where to start.
moryc Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 i am as committed as a republican (and i am not talking usa politics) as anyone but as far as britain goes, no, disagree. they and all the pomp and ceremony that goes with them are massive for britain's tourism industry. granted a lot of that is the same fascination as people seem to find with a trainwreck. that said, holy crap. in the last week we have the execution of a number of people in indonesia (i would add that while i am opposed to the idea of supposedly civilised nations solving problems with firing squads, those idiots were serious drug dealers and got caught in a country with little tolerance where they knew their likely fate - and for anyone wondering, i can point you to exactly where god resides, as it seems that everyone who steps into a prison anywhere finds him) and the infinitely greater tragedy of many thousands killed in nepal and up to two million who have had their lives horrendously affected for the worse. not a word on the forum about any of this, at least as far as i could see, but we are discussing the name about to be given to some sprog on the far side of the planet born into the most dysfunctional family imaginable, bar the mansons. anyone who thinks humanity is not doomed only needs to look at this thread for compelling evidence to the contrary. I see your point Ken. There are life changing events going on in the world that are much more important, yet those get swept under the carpet and the masses are fed this crap. Its all smoke and mirrors. My opinion is that no one should be bowing down to an individual just because they were born by chance into a certain family. This had a place in society prior to the 1650s and certainly not today.

This had a place in society prior to the 1650s and certainly not today. Are you sure of that? Like it or not, but sometimes there's a connection between constitutional monarchy and "rule of law". Take the examples of the Arab world in the 20th century, where the decline of freedoms and human rights has followed the transition from monarchy to a republican system country. Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, these monarchies gave way to radical republics led with an iron hand by dictators.

I am really not sure what you mean by that and what does it have to do with bowing down to an individual this day and age. I don't really want to touch on the political systems and how things are run in the Arab world. That could potentially lead to me getting banned. However, I see a decline of human rights and freedoms in the western world every time I read the news.

Lotusguy Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Nobody keeps anyone from opening a thread about the tragedy in Nepal. If you disagree with monarchy, have at it in your own thread. Why this lighthearted topic needs to be dragged into a discussion of slavery, colonialism, et cetera, is beyond me. So, to be on topic: I find hashtag hilarious and appropriate but my favorite is the above mentioned Julieta 2
Colt45 Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Ken, for a guy who puts out a thread about Bruce Stringbean once a month, leave this thread alone. Why let a little hypocrisy stand in the way of a perfectly good rant? Now go enjoy the penis pothole discussion - it's a world changer. We are the world, we are the children....... P.S. my vote for name is Milkman. 1
mikemerry Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Name her Margaret! So when my son marries her it will be Margaret Merry! My daily smoke pics will all become regional and limited editions. Burn money like Mayweather Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ChanceSchmerr Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I like Charlotte, personally. I'm guessing Victoria.

canadianbeaver Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 "Meanwhile, Britains legal bookmakers have been busy taking in thousands of bets for the babys name. For weeks, they have been saying that Alice is the clear favourite. But in recent days Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, has become the front runner. Other top possibilities included Olivia, Victoria, Elizabeth, Alexandra and Diana, the name of Williams late mother. The newborn may herald a new generation in the monarchy, but it is customary for royals to look to their past for name ideas. The repetition of names in each generation is at least partly an effort to preserve the continuity of one of the worlds oldest institutions. A princess called Charlotte a name that is French in origin would be a nod to her grandfather, Prince Charles. In royal history, George IV named his only child Charlotte, but she died in childbirth at 21. George IIIs wife was Queen Charlotte, who was born 1744."
