GreenPosiden Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 G'day Fellas, I'm on a really tight budget and I found 6 x 50cab boxes of aged Des Dieux from '03 for around USD440. I'm REALLY tempted to get them but factoring in the exchange rate and Aussie duty it'll be like $700 each cab. I've never had them before but I know of their reputation. Should I get them and go broke or should I exercise some restraint to avoid bankruptcy? Edit: Definitely not considering buying all 6 Cabs that's just insane. Should have made myself clearer in the original post. Read the replies, thanks for everyone's input. Might pick one up.
Smallclub Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 You never had an Hoyo des Dieux and you're talking about buying SIX cabs of 50????? What's next? You buy the Partagas factory when you want to try a Lusitania?
jacktarnold Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I love my cab of 03 Des Dieux. I wouldn't buy 6 of them and then eat Raman Noodles for a few months to pay for them however. I would pick up at 1 or 2.
ramon_cojones Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I wouldn't even buy a cab if you've never had them, you may not like them. Unless you don't mind going through the hassle of trading/selling them. I don't buy anything I haven't smoked unless the investment is minimal.
Lotusguy Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I personally love those cigars but I still "only" bought two cabs of them... Why not start with one and try them out?
mk05 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Buy them if you want/like them. If you're looking to buy 6+ boxes, clearly you don't need anyone's advice. Edit: I read past the tight budget tidbit. I'd pass on these.
Stanislaw Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 HELL NO (my opinion) until you can answer these questions to sway you otherwise: - did the person who's selling them store them correctly? you don't want to buy 6 cabs of anything if they haven't been stored properly. - how fast can you smoke? that's 300 of the same cigar you've never tried. - do you have cigar buddies who would be willing to go in on them? - how badly will this affect you financially? you only have two posts so i'm assuming you're new here. if i were you i would build up some savings to cope with the temptations of being a member here because you will see some of the best deals for top quality stuff on this site and you'll blow through $440 easy....
Dbone Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I personally love those cigars ... A damn fine smoke, I do concur.
SurpriseMVP Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Personally have smoked 2 1/2 cabs of these. If i had an option i would pick up another but 6 is a bit crazy Mike
dizedean Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I have had two o3 cabs and would love to get my hands on another. Not sure I would buy all six. A great smoke BTW
MIKA27 Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 Go for broke and grab 1 cab. I'm sure you meant 1 cab right.... And they are a great cigar. I once asked A certain Prez for a recommendation and these were one of them.
stogieluver Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 You never had an Hoyo des Dieux and you're talking about buying SIX cabs of 50????? What's next? You buy the Partagas factory when you want to try a Lusitania? Now that's funny right there. I don't care who you are...that's funny.
CurtisEss Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I bought one of these cabs (ORE SEP 03) from the supplier I think you are probably seeing them from. They have been good, but not great. A lot of the Hoyo profile seems muted in these, and I have greatly preferred some 2010 Epi #2s I have been smoking recently. So overall, the construction is great, the flavor is nice, but they definitely lack any sort of 'wow' factor. That being said, I'm going to pick up a recent production of box of des dieux and age them myself. I expect they will turn out better.
dubleuhb Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Seen another place that showed '03 cab in stock, never dealt with them before though.
Ken Gargett Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 bugger it! buy the six! smoked a lot of these from 2003 and sure, an occasional lesser or average one but mostly just a lovely smoke. in seriousness, definitely get one. try a couple quickly and then decide if you want any more. but i doubt you will regret it, provided well stored etc.
CurtisEss Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I thought Ravi sold out of these? Yes he did. I just looked.
jay8354 Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Definitely buy at least one. Duties and tax does make it expensive but you only live once. Maybe get a co-op or group buy together to spend the cost of shipping, tax and duties. If you get one going, i will be down for one. Lots of members will be interested.
jedipastor Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I like 'em. He'll probably get more in. Buy one, and see if you do too.
tmc123 Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Yes he did. I just looked. Aussies get stuff shipped from HK and yanks from Switzerland, try changing your location and you should see them. Naturally they have different stock levels in each warehouse.
Harleyd31 Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Just recently bought a 03 cab from Ravi- tried one already and really enjoyed it..
socapots Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Love it as well over here. If you can afford it go for it.
greenpimp Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 One of my very favorite cigars. If well kept, you won't be disappointed.
