laficion Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I know that a lot of you smoke N.C.'s ,I would like to know, how many of you smoke cigars that are more then +50 ring gauge.I for one can't smoke bigger then 50 ring gauge ,as hard as I try ,I can't. I looked at a catolog recently I saw a lot of cigars that would be of interest but they were all more then 52 ring gauge,so, I would like to know, Is It ME or what ? Even the Cubans are starting. Is It the new standard ? Are we going to +70 soon ? Real jawbreakers. Guy
investandprosper Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 52 is the most for me, and it's usually the ELs like Sublimes or 520s. 38-50 is my go-to. I'm resisting the trend! The big NCs don't do it for me. If I had to chose one cigar for the rest of my life, it would be a Corona Extra or Corona Gorda.
stogieluver Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I used to smoke 50 rg cigars almost exclusively, but no longer. I've discovered that I really enjoy a 40-46 rg stick more than the larger rg's. The problem is, as you've noted, that almost all of the NC's in catalogs and on-line are 50rg or more. You can hardly find a NC smaller than 50.
Puros Y Vino Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 The NC market has 70+ RG already. The biggest i go is BHK56.

cigcars Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Commen`t al evous`mon ami` I only smoke a 50 RG when it's the only (and slenderest) option offered or available of a particular cigar I'm determined to have!
tmac77 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I know exactly what you mean Guy a 50 RG used to be the limit for me also but with the trend of larger RG cigars this really limited my selection of some fine cigars just over the 50 RG. I now prefer to limit it at 54 but not set in stone. It is unfortunate that the number of cigars below 50 have become more and more scarce these days.
vanbellc Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I don't really like anything much larger than a 52rg either. Besides being a jawbreaker, I seem to have far more burn issues with the larger gauges.
Pilgrims Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 38-46 is the range I love, 52 (for BHK 52) defo the max
Ginseng Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Hi Guy, In NCs, I can usually find a vitola that is in the 50 and under ring to enjoy. And, since with few exceptions, the whole range tastes pretty much the same (e.g., Padron 000's series) you're not missing much. So, again in the the Padron 000's series, the 2000 (5x50) is pretty much all I smoke. Sometimes the Delicia's 4-7/8 x 46 or Churchill 6-7/8 x 46). Wilkey
Stanislaw Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Interesting topic.... I was given a few custom rolled cigars by a friend from Arthur Ave cigars in the bronx and I accepted them graciously but when I saw what was in the bag every stick was 56 or more ring gauge (one was 60)... I attempted to smoke the lowest sized cigar in the bunch and just couldn't do it as my natural instincts are to hold the cigar in my mouth and the damn thing kept slipping out..... That's what she said.....
Troels Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Mc 520 is a wonderful cigar, and the size doesnt bother me, so is partagas e2. I dont hold the cigar in my mouth while smoking, so in that sense its no problem. That said i smoke most cigars rg 40-46. Good for different moments i guess
headstand Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 >50 only very rarely. Like others here 46 rg give or take, is the sweet spot.
Ophidion Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Between 40 and 46 is my go to but I will, occasionally, smoke up to. 56 depending on what smoke it is.
Guest rob Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Funny thing is, I used to smoke a lot of robustos.... But as the years have got on my preference for ring guage has gotten smaller. My go to regular vitolas now are corona gordas, dalias and petit coronas. In summer I'll throw in some churchills and double coronas.
mazolaman Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Agreeing with above really, average is a 42, normal max is 46, with a very rare 50, which i"m usually disapointed with.
Lotusguy Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 With few exceptions, I am strictly <=50RG. The exceptions are BHK, and a few of the LE/RE releases that I enjoy. Figurados/Piramides are a different story, of course.
Lant63 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I use to really enjoy between 50 and 60 but now since I have started smoking more cubans I really enjoy 40. But 52 is probably my favorite ring gauge.
DrunkenMonkey Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 I like piramides occasionally, but other than that I won't even smoke anything bigger around than a robusto/churchill. I've just never enjoyed one of those huge cigars, and so I've stopped trying. I've not tried a BHK, so I suppose I'd give one a try, but honestly I don't understand what the point of making these 56 or 60 RG cigars is. It just seems silly to me.
CdnLimitada Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 Haven't even tried anything over 56. I don't mind all sizes really. Variation is good
canadianbeaver Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 42-48 for me, but we like robustos too, most are 50's. only 52 is a BHK52. Saw a couple of guys with Flying Pigs at the last Toronto dinner and they looked like serious things. I dunno...
nikesupremedunk Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 I enjoy them when I'm in the mood. Once in a while I get a craving for a fat cigar like a 52-55 but I do prefer it in the 40's. I think that's why I don't really like robustos...since it's right in the middle.
