Ryan Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 ""The weather is getting very ugly," said 45-year-old self-employed worker Esteban O'Reilly in Santiago de Cuba." http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/1025/breaking1.html Not the worst hurricane to hit Cuba but crap for the coffee crop, not to mention people who'll lose their homes. It's hundreds of miles east of Pinar del Rio for anyone worried about the tobacco. I like Esteban's name. The way things are here, we'll be expecting remittances home from him soon.
Guest rob Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 I wish them all to be safe and well. Lol... and his name made me laugh!
Ryan Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 Lol... and his name made me laugh! I know, it sounds like the punchline of a joke about a girl who likes spanish-speaking men with small penises.
Scdalak Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Many of us are going to be affected by Sandy, entire East Coast of USA is in sight....
CaptainQuintero Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Just caught the end of the news before bed last night and apparently 11 dead in Cuba at the last count.
JY0 Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 It was 70 degrees here in the western north carolina mountains for the last week. For the next three days we are expecting devastating winds, sub freezing temperatures and a 'historic October snow fall'. Today we will batten down the hatches. We are well prepared...lots of food, cigars and a hard wired propane generator with a full 500 gallon tank. I wish everyone in this storms path the best. Be prepared with food, batteries, flashlights, bottled water, a full tank of gas in you cars, required prescription medicines and some cash in case power is out for a while. It looks bad. Compounding the storm surge problem on the coast, there is a full moon. Good luck to all in its path.
mbrody Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Prepared! But the generator is gas only - for the fridge and a light or two (OK, for internet). Have limited gas for it. Gas stations are going dry in the neighborhood.
CanuckSARTech Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Just catching up on all the news with this hurricane. Sad to hear that around 39 lives or so have been lost by this storm so far, including 22 (?) in eastern Cuba. As much as I'm somewhat happy that this storm didn't drastically affect the cigar regions in Cuba, it sucks when any storm causes any loss of life like this. Prayers and best wishes for all those impacted negatively by this storm, and fingers crossed for east coast Americans and Canadians that are bracing for this "Franken-storm" situation to play out in the coming days (expecting severe rain and winds to a tropical storm level, even in our area of southwestern Ontario).
First Lady Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Be safe everyone, keep your family safe and hope to hear that everyone is okay after Sandy passes
El Presidente Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Keep us informed! If anyone gets needs a hand I am sure we can russle up some support in your area.
bigmanfromou Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Everyone be safe on the East Coast. I've been talking to my cousin in Maryland and she stated is is getting quite bad there.
DougB Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Thanks for the support all and my best wishes to anyone else in the path of this historical storm...The towns along the coast- about 10 mins or so from where we live- are completely evacuated. The worst of it is going to hit from 10:00 a.m. Monday morning through Tuesday morning and into the night. So this thing has legs...10-12 inches of rain predicted and winds at around 70 m.p.h. (110 km) and higher. Fun fun...we are as prepared as we can be and hope the same for everyone else. I am bringing extra clothes (and a ton of cigars) and supplies to work tomorrow in case I can't get back home. Will update on occasion. Be safe everyone!

anacostiakat Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Raining here in the District. Feds are closed. Buses and metro closed today as well. Everyone hunkering down in anticipation of what is to come. Forcast is sustained winds of 50-55 mph with gusts to 65-70 starting later today and running till tomorrow. 5-10 inches of rain. Concerned about power (which we normally don't lose) and trees coming down in the neighborhood.
canadianbeaver Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 On CNN website this a.m. In Cuba, Cape May NJ, this morning,
GTS21 Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Getting ugly here, and we're still hours away from landfall. Winds are already picking up.
Ophidion Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Total travel ban in my county right now until further notice. We still have power so that is nice but who knows how long that will last.
Ginseng Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Spent the last 6 hours driving from Connecticut to Virginia...beating highway, bridge, and tunnel closures all along the way. Sometimes by only an hour or two. Why? Brother in law getting married yesterday. Heavy winds, crazy at bridges over rivers and valleys. Heavy rain. Cars and tractor trailer trucks bent like tin cans. BIL forcibly evacuated from waterfront home. Inlaws no power. Emergency and power crews all over the highways. Parents in NYC, power at risk. All public transpo cancelled. Hundreds of thousands without power already. It's been unpleasant and will continue to get worse through the early morning hours. Stil have power here for now. Wish us luck. Wilkey
nikesupremedunk Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Best of luck Wilkey! Everything is shut down in NYC right now...luckily work closed early so just waiting at home to see how things turn out.
CigarB Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Also here in Delaware, it's starting to pick up. Sounds like the storm is intensifying instead of weakening. Landfall coming in the next couple hours.
