sbmcduffee Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Just had my first Por Larranaga Motecarlos. Box code is MLO Mar 12. They've been in the humidor for just over a month at around 67%. While I plan on letting the majority sit for some time, I couldn't help but try one as I've never had anything from PL and have only had a few long and skinnies ever. I bought these with the idea that they would be a less serious smoke while I aged some of the more storied cigars in my collection. I was shocked by just how good they were. The cigar started out with a really pure roasted tobacco flavor. It really showcased that Cuban "twang" that everyone who tries to explain Cuban cigars describes. About halfway through it kind of settled down into some creamy coffee flavors. I also got my first taste of bread in a cigar. It was a lot like a croissant dipped in coffee with cream. Toward the end it hinted at getting some nutmeg or cardamom, but mostly just kept developing the creamy coffee flavors. Right around 90 minutes beginning to end and exceptional throughout. If the rest of the box comes anywhere close to the first one I will have to say these are the best value coming out of Cuba. 2
Lotusguy Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Yup, these are hidden gems ... which means they'll probably get discontinued next year 1
papatrips Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Are the pantelas and montecarlos mixed filler? I had a PL pantela once and it was fantastic. 1
CaptainQuintero Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 I think they are medium filler? I've not kept up with the changes since things were swapped about in 2002 so not that sure. They are great change of pace cigars though, perfect with a milk coffee and watching the world go by mid morning/afternoon, enjoy!
Blnguy Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 The Panetelas are definitely "Tripa Corta". I had 3 boxes, very different in colour, but all very good and ready to smoke. I liked the darkest best.
CanuckSARTech Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Montecarlos are long filler. Sent from my iPhone via Tapatalk. 2
Livo Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 Panetela - short filler Montecarlo - long filler PLPC - long filler Is this correct? 1
Lotusguy Posted October 21, 2012 Posted October 21, 2012 Panetela - short filler Montecarlo - long filler PLPC - long filler Is this correct? Correct! All hand made.
Wil Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Keen to try these. I got a box of the panetelas around the same time. Can't believe how good they are for the price.
ajgagnon Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 I can vouch as well. I'm guarding the remaining Montecarlos from my first box. Just love them.
CBL Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 Love this cigar! Not a big fan of the Panetela, and have yet to try a Petit Corona that knocks my socks off, but the Monte Carlos is truly and consistently great. A constant in my humidor next to the RASCC.
frenchkiwi Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Sounds like you got a good box - but don't be surprised if they go sickly tasting ("muted"/"to sleep") soon. If they're smoking that good keep smoking 'em! Maybe buy another box or 2 to store They are generally better with 3 years + on them BUT it all depends on the tobacco. I've had boxes that had a straightforward sweet and rich taste when young that just died on me with age (A), and others that went through metallic/muted period only to re-emerge as stellar and complex a couple years later ... Often boxes with great wrappers with light-bodied filler seem to do A and stronger filler with any kind of wrapper do B. And to complicate matters their larger stocks of tobacco and lower production of cigars in recent years seems to mean that some young boxes have decently aged tobacco in them anyway... and don't seem to need the mandatory rest of yore. Are you confused yet? So am I lol.
jb2jb Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Smoking these for about 2 years and love them. Most say to me what are you smoking, when I tell them they say oh I like my Partagas. They have not opened there palate yet to these GEMS..
sbmcduffee Posted October 31, 2012 Author Posted October 31, 2012 Thanks for all the replies. I have indeed ordered more, I don't see this box lasting very long. Just had a party and shared five or six of them. Everyone was really shocked at how good they were. 1
srsMichael Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 this pushed me over the edge. purchasing two boxes. one to smoke and the other to hide
RLinNH Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 this pushed me over the edge. purchasing two boxes. one to smoke and the other to hide What he said... These have always been on my radar, but at the price point, I never gave them a chance. I will now
garbandz Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Agree this is a winner, delicate but very tasty......
LouisMazzini Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Gems is right. Very underrated and great cigar IMHO. I'm grabbing what I can for sure before HSA starts taking a look at them in comparison to the rest of the marca. What a loss this would be.
lovesmallrg Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 I have been interested in them, but held off because they seem to be on the mild side of medium. would you guys agree with that, in terms of strength?
Jeremy Festa Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Literally just had one! The fourth from an '08 box! Love them! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

CBL Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Good to know the '13s are smoking well. Time to re-up.
kwsaw63 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Smoking one now, Rott One of the sweetest young cigars I've smoked. This would be a tremendous am smoke with coffee. AME MAY 13. Good to know. Got a May 13 box inbound and am looking forward to trying one.
