Although I made up my mind to hold off on cigar purchases until my birthday in Sept, I can't help but constantly think about what I want to get. I want to get something pricey and special, something that I'll smoke only on my birthdays or something. And nothing fits the bill better (at least in terms of pricey) than the Behikes and the 1966 EL. I've been reading up a lot on both, but haven't found any comparing both directly. So I ask those of you that have sampled both; how do these differ from each other? And which would you rather choose if you only had choice for 1? Also, if I do decide to go for the BHK, should I get the 52 or the 54? I know I can't go wrong with any of the 3, but still kind of curious how the BHK stands up to the 1966 EL.

Hi Nikesupremedunk,

With that referenced, and going even further, I would say these specific cigars taste like they should be smoked NOW. 5yr old leaves? Crap! Sounds like they're ready!

Want better than all of these? Punch Platinos.

How old will you be? I would not spend my money on these unless a group of you were smoking them and you were going to really enjoy the moment, and then I would buy a box of BHK 54's. The box itself is a real great reminder of the day too.

When I turned 50 I got myself a Davidoff 1987 and went nuts over it.

To be Honest, its not the cigar that will make the day speacial. its the people your going to be with. I could be smoking some pre embargo RA or a PSD4, in the end I wont remember the cigar, i'll remember the moment, the friends I spent the day with. i'm turning 30 on september 3rd...I dont have any uber speacial cigar lined up...Just gonna smoke something with my friends and enjoy the moment.

Thats just me though...on your topic...i'd go with a bhk 54, or if you can find an aged siglo VI i think it would be even better.

Complicating matters a bit - the 1966 won't be around forever so that might guide my purchasing, unless... you have an option on an 09 box of the Behikes (whichever size, I'm partial to the 54), in which case I'd go for that. I haven't smoked a ton of them by any stretch, but I've been more impressed by the earlier (El Laguito?) production than that which has come later. Still a good cigar, but not as good in my limited experience.

I'm sitting on an 09 box of 54s that is one of the very few boxes that are reserved for truly special occassions.

My personal thoughts after having both are the 1966's do need more time and will benefit from that. The Behikes are IMO better now and will also benefit from more time to become better still. Based on that I'd go with the Behikes and enjoy how they develop over the years.

Unless you get an early box of BHK i would say get the 1966s. The BHKs have had some quality control issues after the early batches so they are not great examples of the BHK. They are still good cigars, just not eh BHK that everyone was in love with from the early batch.

Save yourself some money and get yourself a nice box of sir winstons or esplendidos from the right factory.

You haven't even smoked any of them have you? I'd hold off on buying a box and looking forward to smoking one after so long if you don't know if you will like the cigar. That would be a huge disappointment.

Pretty sure you mean 2010 and not 2009.

To the OP, I agree with Riaz. Smoke something you like already. The people and environment matter more than the cigar. You may buy a box of 1966s or BHKs and realize that you dont care for them. Or you may put on a fake smile and say they are great even if you dont like them, just so as not to feel bad you just spent 300-400 on 10 cigars you dont like!

If I was looking for something special for my birthday, I would ask Rob what he would suggest in his inventory and have him send me a list of 3 or 4 different choices and choose amongst those.

You're right, my box is ABR 10...

For my taste i would go with the 1966's. I had my first bhp 52 last week and did not care for it, kinda glad

Great advices everyone. Unfortunately I don't know anyone around me that enjoys cigars so I was thinking of buying them as a treat for myself. Looks like I'm going to have to try them before I invest in a box

How is there not more emphasis on profile...I mean a couple folks have said it, but I don't need to smoke a 1966 to know from reviews that these are completely different cigars.

If you prefer your Cohibas in the Maduro, get the 1966. If you prefer the Siglo line, albeit more amped up, get the Behike.

I've smoked the Behike 54 & 52, and for my $$...the 54 is where it's at. But again, I prefer the profile of the regular Cohiba and Siglo line to anything Maduro. Cohiba Maduros are THE most overhyped Cuban cigar IMO (had a couple genios & magicos and was less than impressed), and I refuse to push the 1966 hype machine more than it already has been.

im with coug28 its pretty much how i see them both! imo id go with the bkh54..its the most balanced of the 3 i feel at least

Posted

are the 1966's really maduro? i generally don't smoke maduro and don't have any desire to try the cohiba maduros either. I guess BHK it is then. And I'm pretty sure there will be no more 1966's in sept anyway.

There are fireproof black EL wrappers and light EL wrappers. Both take away rather than add to the experience IMO.

Listen to what spivy was saying. He knows what he's talking about.

Personally, I'd do the BHK 54. I think they are excellent now, and COHIBA tends to age very well. The 1966s might be good, I haven't had one because I just don't buy expensive LEs ... more misses than hits for me.

But really, I'd go with the others and say you should buy something you already love rather than take a chance on something that's "supposed" to be good. Get an HQ/PSP box of your favorite smokes from Rob, that way you really can't go wrong.

^Excellent advice. However, I'm still new and still in the "trying everything" phase so I don't even know what my favorite smoke is yet :lookaround:
