I would like to thank everyone for getting in their selections for Cigar No 1 in the Bind Tasting Competition.

Looking through the reviews this really was a "Love it" or "Hate it" cigar and the passion was running strong either way lol3.gif

I chose this Petit Corona because I have enjoyed them over the last few months very much. I have found them to be medium, building progressively to medium full. I see many of the better aspects of the marque within this cigar. There is a distinctive sweet floral note both on the nose and on the palate. There is a lingering darker, earthly characteristic which plays nicely on the sweeter aspects. Still young but with serious potential.

The three top selections were Bolivar, Upmann and Por Larranaga Petit Corona. I can see elements of each within this cigar.

Only three tasters were correct within their selection. I would encourage you to go back and re-read their review and compare it to your own experience.

The cigar has a noticeable box press, limiting the options of what it could be.

From the foot I had prelight cedar and sweet tobacco. The prelight draws were floral and sweet.

Upon lighting I tasted leather, fruit, sweetness, nut, tons of twang and a cedar finish.

As the cigar entered the 2nd third, sweetness died down a bit, but the combined flavor was like a fruit-nougat candy with a floral finish and a creamy floral nose.

The floral flavor and the nougat candy flavor at times was almost like rose Turkish delight.

Into the final third, the sweetness really left, but cedar, cream, and rose were still quite prominent. The nub had a toasted hay/barnyard/light peat earthiness getting toward only a half inch left.

I've had cigars in other vitolas share some of these flavors, but if this is the cigar I'm guessing, I will need to pick up a box because it was a wonderful smoke.

Cottierm

Appearance: nice colorado wrapper; box pressed; under-filled with a few soft spots (as a consequence the ash will fall down twice very quickly); draw is on the loose side.

Smell and draw at cold: are similar to me, that is chocolate and sweet tobacco.

Smell in combustion: leather.

1/3: dark coffee + wood + grass are the first impressions; then wood + leather; quite powerful on the nose; a bit of honey adds itself to the wood & leather flavours. Quite a sweet cigar!

2/3: more espresso-like with a bit of bitterness and some spice; nutty flavours.

3/3: the cigar has moved from the espresso range to a strong tea-like profile; pleasant woodiness with a touch of cedar and grass.

Overall: a quick burner due to its average construction but a pleasant smoke. 88 at the moment. I have still a couple of other cigars I'd like to try before submitting my reply.

Good luck to all!

Onto the second cigar . Lets have your reviews in by the end of the month. I will start a new thread.

Well done guys!

Very surprised to find it was an R&J PC. Not something I would have previously considered buying, yet I really enjoyed it. Guess that's the point of blind tasting. Great stuff.

Wd gents. Blind tasting is great stuff, definetly makes us try cigars we may not usually go for.

Back to the drawing board for me

Lots of fun.

I thought it was something I have not smoked before, and the revelation at least proved that right! Good job to those that got it right, and Keith, you did nail the RyJ!

I have to tell you. From the reviews, I was convinced it was a Rafael Gonzalez PC. Turns out to be a Romeo rolled in the Rafael Gonzalez factory. Nice.

I enjoyed mine too. First one I've had, but not the last!

Wowsers - that was my 4th pick at best... Congrats to the few that got it right :2thumbs:

I wish i could blame the plug on my bad guess, but no way i was guessing RyJ unless a cherry and a rolled up napkin with RyJ on it came out in the ash.

Well done guys.

Cheers guys.

I wasn't even in the direction of R&J... I was sure it was either BPC or PLPC.

this was an extremely enjoyable experience. Looking forward for trying with cigar no.2.

Congratulations, bravo.

If they were as floral / sweet as described by Michel and Andrew , I would smoke them every day!

However, mine tasted of sooty charcoal in the main...

Never mind,

looking forward to round 2!

As an interested bystander..

Nice choice to start, bit of a wild card.

Recently, all the R Y J I've smoked have been excellent.

BTW, from reading reviews, I thought it was the Juan Lopez....

Wow, I would never have thought RyJ. So much wood in such an ugly stick! You live and learn.

Well done to the three who got it right.

It is so obvious now you mention it! That's one thing I hate/love about blind reviews, you kick yourself after!

Wow. First of all, congratulations to the 3 guys that got this right. From the reviews posted they were able to detect tastes that I missed.

Romeo y Julieta wasn't even on my radar screen for this. I've had such a bad experience with recent RJ that I have stopped sampling or purchasing them several years ago. I found the Short Churchills from a few years ago bland and nondescript. One of the best boxes of cigars I've ever had was a box of 98 RJ Exhibition #4s, so I knew that this marca had past glory. Rob, you've done us all a service by making it clear that this marca is back, in spades. My cigar was rough but flavorful. It was the kind of cigar that in my opinion can really blossom with significant age and mellowing out of the harshness. I didn't detect the distinctive old school RJ flavors but I think this could be a case of expectation, I had written RJ off as a serious cigar.

Looking forward to Round 2.

Hats off to the lucky three. Pres sure did an outstanding job on mixing up the competition this year. The pressure is now on a select few

Like the Professor, I had written off RJ, just never had one I enjoyed... except for the Duke. But, this has intrigued me to say the least...

Well down to those who got it, have to say the last few R&J's I've had have impressed me, not marque I look to buy but that should change...onto No2

Posted

WOW. Just....wow.

Congrats and kudos to the three amigos who made the correct pick. This is generally a larger selection of sticks, the petit corona / marevas format, and there's lots of possibilities with this smaller format. Very well done, especially going back and reading their reviews again in hindsight.

Now, that said....

Are you freakin' kidding me?!?!!?! I got the RyJ blending and flavours there, and I end up picking the wrong freakin' one???? Same exact format, presumably damn near the same blending, and I pick the one with a different name?!!?!?!?! ARRRRRGGGHGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! :tantrum:

3/4 of a point then maybe????? :innocent:

LOL. Hail to the victors - on with the game....

NO way, too much discussion of flavors like "anise." That could never be Juan Lopez.

Congratulations to NJP and AndrewT!

Wow! One for the book! Two still to come.

Good luck to all!

Best,

Congrats to NJP and cottierm!

The retrohale was absolutely spot on dead ringer for several Ex #4s I've had. The fruit wasn't as defined for me as the strong cherry of the Ex #4s, but in a close enough vein, add in the floral notes and cedar and the cigar hit so much of what is good in RyJ for me.

Fair point Edward.

Had some recent JL petits that lean towards the RYJ profile but with a lot less fruit and cherry, more grassy.
