joshb Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Wanted to check in with the the vintage cc cognoscenti and try to get some input on some singles. What do you guys/gals think of these possibilities: Bolivar Coronas Extra - Nov '98 Upmann PC - May '02 Partagas Series P No. 2 - Sep '06 Punch Super Selection No. 1 - Feb. '02 RG Lonsdales - Jul '02 RyJ. Exhibicion No. 3 - May '02 Any input, experiences, yays or nays would be very appreciated. Cheers!
joshb Posted April 1, 2012 Author Posted April 1, 2012 Also to add: Diplo No. 1 - Dec. '00 I know the '98-'01 stuff can be tricky, just wondering if this and the Bolis might be worth a crack, sight unseen though.
cigcars Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 I have two five packs of very tiny, shrimp perfectos called "Farach" somethings. I've had them since 2000 or before and they're supposed to be near pre-embargo (maybe a little younger) but definitely "vintage." I FINALLY broke down and smoked one about 4 months ago. It was Heavenly. Again, they are VERY small - about 2& 1/2 inches. But it was a nice wonderful Habana smoke.
Hohenthal Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Wanted to check in with the the vintage cc cognoscenti and try to get some input on some singles. What do you guys/gals think of these possibilities: Bolivar Coronas Extra - Nov '98 should be good, probably depending on dress box / cab (?) Upmann PC - May '02 can`t tell, 03 were special, recent ones even better. Partagas Series P No. 2 - Sep '06 should / could be good Punch Super Selection No. 1 - Feb. '02 had 03's only, but would be surprized if they wheren't good RG Lonsdales - Jul '02 Stay away from 01's - but 02 COULD be fantastic RyJ. Exhibicion No. 3 - May '02 don't know... Any input, experiences, yays or nays would be very appreciated. Cheers!
PigFish Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Many of these cigars could be excellent. I would be all over the RG Lonsdales! I have smoked many boxes of them... never had a bad one! All depends on the price. -Piggy
CaptainQuintero Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Unless you can get your hands on them it's hard to say. A lot of the cigars that were deleted a long time ago and are still around seem to be getting to the last of the stocks, and sometimes (Not all.) the quality of what is still around seems to be the dregs. eg I've had some horrendous RG lonsdales and Punch RS 11s recently. It boils down to how good is your vendor and do you trust them to pick you a great box and if the quality is not there, for them to tell you to keep your money.
joshb Posted April 1, 2012 Author Posted April 1, 2012 Thanks for the input. These are from what I understand to be a gold standard source. Best, Josh Early release PSP2s were terrible at first imho. I dont know what 5-6 years have done for them though. My choices would be the Boli or Punch. Both great cigars no matter the year. Are these only singles, or are boxes possible? How have these cigars been kept over the years? By a serious colelctor, or some guy who bought them here and there and stuck them in the pantry?
khomeinist Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Singles? Try them all. Boxes? Probably the Bolivar and Punch. (i actually agree with the Canadian post-master) RG Lonnies are a favorite but I would want a guaranteed return policy as tent pegs exist.
Smallclub Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Diplo No. 1 - Dec. '00 I have had two boxes of 2000. Only 2 or 3 hard draw, 0 plugged in each box. If your vendor checks (and offers a garantee), go for it, they can be fantastic… The Upmann PC from '02 are excellent in my books.
cigcars Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Okay, folks; they're called "Flor de F.Farach"s in a small cardboard container pack, "Habana-Cuba", 5 Farachitos. And on the side of the small carton it says, "GARANTIZO QUE EL TABACO QUE EMPLEO EN ESTOS FARACHITOS PROCEDEN DE LAS MEJORES VEGAS DE VUELTA ABAJO". Hope that's some clear up.
gersonmorelli Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Early release PSP2s were terrible at first imho. I dont know what 5-6 years have done for them though. A couple of years ago I've had some outstanding 06 PSP2. Peanut butter on a stick. But it's really been from one box, so it have been that exceptional box...
mk05 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Wanted to check in with the the vintage cc cognoscenti and try to get some input on some singles. Vintage, is a different world (as you probably are finding, so I will be frank). Unless you buy these when they come out and age yourself, you have no idea on how good the stock you're aging is. Sure you can go and buy some vintage from '84, but if the cigars were garbage to begin with, you'll be buying some pumped up aged garbage. Ask why these cigars have been sitting for so long. Just thoughts. Now to cigars. Not a Boli fan, I've smoked through a cab of the BCE 98, and to me it is ok - not decent or great - some will be excellent, others will be bland. To me, a great CE stick will be like tasting some light milk coffee with dirt and some hay. A normal or bad one will taste like wet cardboard. This marca is an example of one that has come out on top post-00 with new blending. Not a huge Partagas smoker, but got the P2 - the OR of 2005. I actually tried it rather recently, and remember them being uninspiring like most D4s of post-00. They are very light compared to true vintage Partagas, in body and flavors - you see bits and pieces of old Partagas magic in the end of a Lusi, or moments of an 898v, but most recent Partagas are just disappointing. You'll find light white pepper, some hints of caramel, a little bit of white bread here and there. Almost like a spicy version of a Genios... Vintage RyJ, when good stock, are beautiful. Just a mass of floral bouquet with that light nectar on your nose, then that thick smoke thats like Nutella. This year you have is pretty new. RyJ used to be much stronger and more intense, but this should still be a wonderful smoke. Buy a box of RyJ Cazzy, sit them for 20 years and tear through that foil. You'll be glad you did.
ramon_cojones Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I wouldn't call anything newer than 10 yrs vintage.
maverickdrinker Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Bolivar Coronas Extra - Nov '98 Punch Super Selection No. 1 - Feb. '02 These would be my 2 top picks. aged bolis are delicious!!!!!!!
pedro7913 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Here is a five pack of pre-embargo/vintage la coronas. I hope to enjoy these sticks soon
cottierm Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Nice, very nice!!! Please, don't forget to report your experience once you have smoked one of these. Best, Michel

joshb Posted April 3, 2012 Author Posted April 3, 2012 Thanks for the input, much appreciated! For what it's worth a had a great d4 the other night, that being a pretty subjective data point... mk05 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Glad I could help! If you like the D4 of present, you will love the P2.
joshb Posted April 3, 2012 Author Posted April 3, 2012 Only had 2-3 D4s in the late 90s, and to be honest my memory of them is only that they were very good, no specific memory of the profile and didn't have enough of them really. Maybe ignorance is bliss in this case! Glad I could help! If you like the D4 of present, you will love the P2.
pedro7913 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 That I have never seen another of these five packs of la coronas, but got busy, sorry for posting! What is the purpose of this post?
