Monte 2 blew my head off... but maybe that is my fault for being a wimp. The other could possible be the Cohiba Maduros series. I know my fellow Toronto FOH guys love them but they do nothing for me.

Monte #2 - Tried a bunch, never had on that people describe as "being on" I guess

CoRo - Just don't get this one either

Most El's

1. RASCC - plugged little suckers, I'm a glutton for punishment for trying at least a half dozen of these over-rated sticks with poor construction

2. Cohiba Siglo I and II - too much coin for a 'meh' experience...

3. Trinidad Robusto T - I'm glad to see it gone...

Monte 2 - I have never had one that made me understand the cigar

Trinidad Reyes - Party Shorts, SCDLH Principes, and RASCC all do the minuto role better and cheaper.

Punch Double Corona - The Lusi, SLR, HdM, and RAG are all better.

The only cigar that I can chime in on is the Monte 2. I've smoked five or so from 3 different boxes. It never has done well by me.

Is it a good question? There are so many parameters involved:

a. your personal tastes which will evolved during your 'smoking career'. For instance, when I started my journey through the CC world, I was a great fan of the tres petit corona/minuto size (with the late Petit Punch being my favourite). But did I really like them for what they were or did I enjoy them so much because I didn't know better at that time and because they were relatively cheap for my student purse? Nowadays I keep trying RASCC, Trini Reys and Partagas Shorts, but they do not much for me. On the other hand, I profoundly hated ERDM Choix Supreme while twenty years later I enjoy them tremendously. HdM Epicure 1 and 2 have never done the trick for me and of course many will disagree, but I think it is only my personal taste!

b. Overproduction of the most famous brands. R&J is rock bottom, but many vitolas in their catalogue used to be so good 10-15 years ago. The Montecristo regular line will always disappoint because they have always been so popular and thus overproduced. I smoked a ton of MC no 4 when I started in this hobby and like them for what they were and still are: a good, no surprising, and widely available cigar; nothing less but nothing more either. Same with Partagas nowadays unfortunately.

c. Young and fresh versus aged sticks. In Switzerland twenty years ago you could not find on display in any serious cigar shops a CC which had not at least 2 or 3 years of age. Now, what is available tends to be more on the young side. Young cigars are a totally different experience that one may or not like. However, the same stick may (and usual does) develop after at least 3 year of aging, changing in most cases the smoking experience. For instance, HdM Hoyo des Dieux, while interesting at a young age, becomes truly divine only after 3 years.

d. Comparing the incomparable. Does a question like 'Would you prefer a Trini Reyes or a Montecristo A?' simply make sense?

Best,

Michel

The Monty 2 is first by miles. I've had fresh ones, aged ones and ones that people have assured me would change my opinion but I just don't see what all the fuss is about. I could say that about the entire Monty line though.

The Bolivar RC would be my second choice. People rave about them and call them classic but like the Monty it's another cigar that I struggle to find a lot of flavour in, especially when compared to some of it's competition like RASS or PSD4.

I might be blasted for this but I'm going to have to pick the Trini Reyes as my third cigar. It's not bad at all and I certainly wouldn't say no to one but I'd pick a Party Short or RASCC over it anyday and that's without factoring in their increased cost.

There seems to be too much overlap for this to be a coincidence as a lot of people are naming Monte #2's along with, inevitably, 2 more cigars that I've enjoyed quite a lot. Whatever flavor profile I enjoy must engender a lot of "meh" in a lot of other people. Interesting...I guess more Monte #2's for me!

Trinidad robusto T (boring and bland)

Party Shorts (i know alot of people love them but they are two dimensional for me)

Boli RC (not a fan of robustos, and these just seem too mild for me)

Any montecristo... (seriously)

Cohiba siglo vi (too expensive, too incomplex)

Hoyo des dieux (enjoyable but didnt blow me away)

Trinidad Fundadore, I've had three or four and every one has been a bland boor. Even the '98s.

Ramon Allones Small Club Coronas. It's been pointed out that there are draw problems with these.

Bolivar Belicoso Fino. Not up to par with the rest of the line.

Is it not a fellow named pigfish (?) who signs his posts, "friends do not friends smoke LEs". :wink2:

R&J Churchill

Trinidad Fundadore (I actually don't mind these, but I'm not sure they're worthy of the status; they don't even begin to come close to the Partgas SDC 1 I have)

Cohiba Esplendido (paying that much for a churchill, they better be out of this friggen world every time)

Opus X, tried many of them and not worth the money even at msrp. I find Pardon much better NC but way overpriced

Ramon Allones RE, good cigars but way too many that taste too similiar and a hefty price added for the extra band

Trinidad Robusto T, tried a few and wanted to like them but although good, not good enough for a premium, I can see why they are deleting this cigar, although they should just reprice.
