Guest airmikey Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 im hesitant on pulling the trigger on a box of cohibas...i guess i dont want to spend all that cash just to find out that they taste like this or that.
ramon_cojones Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 If you wanted something similar or as good then that would mean they'd taste like this or that also. Why not buy some samples from the czar? Problem solved.

SImilar and as Good as Cohiba is going to be something you won't get the same answer from two different people... If you want something that tastes like a Cohiba... it's going to be a Cohiba. But, my personal opinion, is that the quality is often hit or miss. Don't get me wrong, when they're on, they're on. But, I also think they're spend for what you get. I keep some around, but mostly as "very special" occasion type cigars. Rob tends to post what's smoking well. So, if you don't see Cohiba on his posts... you might want to avoid them at that time. And, different Cohibas have flavors that aren't the same as the others. The Maduro 5 doesn't taste at all like a Siglo... nor does it taste like a Behike... etc... If you don't know what you like, order one of the Czar's samplers. You can get a size range that you like, and get a bunch of different brands, including some Cohibas. You may find that you like Ramon Allones and can't stand Cohibas.
maverickdrinker Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 agree with the above posts. Only cohiba is cohiba and within that, the siglo line is different to the maduro 5 and BHK lines. Get a bunch of samplers and try to find out what you like. No need to spend on boxes yet. lots to discover first.
BatFastard Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Why not buy some samples from the czar? Problem solved. IMO this is the best way to try out new cigars without having to put out for a full box/cab. I would suggest trying a couple samplers or singles first. Or maybe try to find someone or a couple people to do a box split with.
jay8354 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 singles are the way to go when first starting out. it means you get a feel for what you like, don't like at a affordable price and lack of storage space. Only when you know what you want in a cuban, do you start buying boxes (yes plural because you will never stop at one box). Just cause you are thinking Cohiba, don't mean they will become your favourites. I started with Cohibas, and now, in love Partagas and HdM skinnies. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Cohiba but need to spread the love.
cigcars Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 The previous suggestions about getting a sampler pack is spot on, yes. However IMHO I personally think nearly any regular production Partagas should be highly satisfactory as far as on-target Habana taste and flavor, the way Cohibas are reputed to be (and sometimes fall short). The Partagas Shorts, Milles Fleurs, Partagas de Partagas, Presidente`, ad infinitum are always unfailing in flavor and aroma.
Munts Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Guantanamera Cristales are pretty spot on to Cohibas!!!
aavkk Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I agree with the above posts, the problem is that even in recent production Cohiba's need 5-7 years before they "open up" and you really get what you pay for. While I lean towards the classic line IMO to really experience the range you'll want to try lanceros, Siglo II or IV and the Robusto. I cant comment on the newer editions such as the Behike's because my experience is very limited. Each of these cigars are very unique while sharing a similar underlying DNA. Just remember its a long journey and only time and experience will allow for you to form your own perspective.
jedipastor Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Really depends what you by "tastes like." If you just mean mild-medium but flavorful, HdM and Trinidad are both good marcas. If you mean it really tastes like a Cohiba ... nothing but Cohiba. I had an HdM Epicure Especial today and it was great!
cottierm Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I totally agree with you on aging and I would like to add that because most of the Cohiba vitolas are extremely popular it is rather difficult to find an aged box still available.
canadianbeaver Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 If you have a buddy that will trade with you, problem solved painlessly. Lisa
isa Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 im hesitant on pulling the trigger on a box of cohibas...i guess i dont want to spend all that cash just to find out that they taste like this or that. Am pretty new to cigars and have tried a few cohibas: Behike 52, siglo I, esplendido & CoRo - for me all of them have been pretty different in flavour profile. But this i can say, when they were on, they were just great. But they can be all over the place. For example, i have tried quite a few siglo I's - they have ranged from great to outright bland. So my plan is to try a HQ box from czar , just to reduce the risk of getting a box of low quality smokes. Cant speak for others, but personally , i think cohiba is worth trying - the best cigar i have smoked till now has been a cohiba robusto. So i say, try some samplers at least, its not worth missing IMHO
Dbone Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Get a box of Cohiba Robusto from Rob, it's a staple in most everyones humidor
Doctorossi Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 im hesitant on pulling the trigger on a box of cohibas...i guess i dont want to spend all that cash just to find out that they taste like this or that. Don't worry- they definitely taste like the other.

CigarAsh Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Definitely go the sampler route. Pick one from the Czar or build your own. At this very moment, a custom sampler of cigars I've never tried before is waiting for me at home - just delivered today from a long awaited Czar order. I'm feeling the need to leave work a little early today to go break into them. Should I patiently set them aside in my humidor for 30 days to recover from their trip? Hell no, I'm grabbing the tastiest looking sample and smoking it right off the truck with my best 18 year old Jameson the minute I get home. Let me see . . . should I smoke the sir winston, or the Epicure #1, or the BHK52, or the SigloIII or one of the 3 or 4 others I bought samples of? so many decisions. And to be fair I bought several of each to give them an adequate test. I had 2 Saint Luis Rey Regios in a sampler from last summer. The first one was awful - one of the worst cigars of the summer. I never wanted to touch the second one - but in a moment of madness I did, it was amazingly good and now the Regio is one of my favorites. So it is with Cuban cigars . . .
Guest airmikey Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 i dont know maybe i wasnt clear..i have smoked a few different cc's ....i just haven't tryied cohiba....isn't there anyone out there that has said ?..hmmm this sure taste like my cohiba.
rallones Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 i dont know maybe i wasnt clear..i have smoked a few different cc's ....i just haven't tryied cohiba....isn't there anyone out there that has said ?..hmmm this sure taste like my cohiba. You were perfectly clear, but you're trying to find something that doesn't exist. It's like asking "what non-dairy product tastes like milk?" Not a perfect example, but the first one I thought of. You can find out yourself by buying a sampler pack. Why make things more complicated than they need to be? I'm not trying to be confrontational, but you've gotten some pretty good responses that you are overlooking.
charlesod Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I love Cohibas. But, I've run across many more poor boxes than great ones. My faves are the Robustos and the Siglo 4's. I would suggest waiting until Rob gives a box a high rating. Then, pull the trigger and splurge. You'll be glad you did.
Ginseng Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Two Cohibas in the classic line that I find consistent above all, yet quite distinct from the oft-noted CoRobust and occasionally frustrating Esplendidos, are the Exquisitos and Coronas Especiales. Try either of those with a few years on and you'll have a good idea of what those Cohibas taste like. IMO, since the variability in some of the larger and larger ring vitolas is greater, it's harder to dial into their personality. Wilkey

Like it has been mentioned before, you are very clear. But you have got to understand that for Cobiha, because of the range and lines they have, the flavour profile is very different in each. Example: Behike taste different to Siglos and they tastes different to Maduros which is very much different to the CoRos (to me anyway).

It would be difficult to maintain the premium if that happened a lot, wouldn't it?
Ginseng Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I've heard some Macanudo vitolas come close to the CoRo. Right? Right? Wilkey
