for those of you who have a large inventory in your humidor that remain in the original boxes the sticks come in or even if you take them out and place in your own trays. how often do you inspect your cigars or don't you? inspecting by opening each box to check the contents for mold, bugs, plume or anything else? i'm curious if that would be a normal process. I check maybe every couple months and curious if that's overkill. i don't have a very large inventory but only a few boxes i need to open.

sounds about right.. I think it's logical to inspect.. i didn't start until this past May and it's a good thing i did.. a box of Punch that i inspected had very early stages of mold (the white kind). very little and easy to brush off with a paper towel. they still smoked good but just to be safe i quarranteed them by putting them in a plastic baggie in the humidor. it's Oct now and they are doing fine.. not all had the white mold but more than half..

Deep storage coolers, maybe once every 1 to 2 years. Others, not at all regularly but no more than once a year. At this point, if there's no mold and there are no beetles, there ain't gonna be.

I check my stuff once maybe even twice a month partly as a safety inspection but also just love the visuals and having a smell...

I love the smell too. But I fear that the more you let out and sniff, the less is in the cigars themselves.

every couple of months or so, I only have one cooler so its not that hard to manage

I haven't been able to inspect my boxes for over a year and I won't be able to check them for another :'( I hope I won't get any unpleasant surprises when I return to my humi next year. Not too worried about beetles, but I've had mold before so that's a scary thought.

I was doing maybe once a year, but ever since I had water seeping into my humidor that will change.

For some reason, maybe influence from a higher power, I decided just to go through my 50 count box and see how the babies at the bottom were doing when I saw the water. Ever since that day not only am I closely looking at the stash, but I am also going to church again. :innocent:

Randomly check boxes from different fridges every couple of months or so. This has saved me grief a few times.... just recently I found a box of Padron 80th anniversary that were becoming mouldy - early action saved them!

Once a year I inspect/take pictures of every box for insurance purposes.

it sounds like a prudent thing to do to inspect every so often given that a few that posted found some mold but caught in the early stages to save them. i too saved my Punch sticks when i discovered it early. i have an end table type humidor with a glass top that holds approx 600 sticks. like many, i love to open it up if do to nothing but take a whiff of the aroma..

spawning to the topic of mold... i generally keep the humidor at around 65 - 68 humidity level which has been working out, for my taste. i thought mold develops when the humidity level is way too high like 75 +.. i live in the northeast in the US so the seasons change and the weather is starting to get colder.. i have never seen the humidity level rise above 72 in my humidor.. could the mold spores have existed in the cigars box before it even reached my humi?

anyway,, thanks for everyone's feedback re the inspection..

I can't keep my fingers off my stash - so it ends up being about once a month that I hit every box with an inspection. :spotlight:

I rotate them every 3 months and full check of each box every 6 months just to ensure nothing is going

crazy in there :)

I thought exactly the same.... except my encounter with mouldy padrons has taught me otherwise.

Exactly the same storage conditions (Rh & temp) and years went by with nothing on them.... open up this year for inspection and saved $650 worth of tobacco.

Wow, I'm very surprised. NC usually like a higher RH than CC.

Were you mixing your NC and CC? If the NC had mold I'd expect the CC to also be moldy.

I only used beads. Do you use active humidification?

The only time I ever check my boxes is when they arrive in the mail and when I'm pulling a stick out of them to smoke...otherwise they just sit there undisturbed.

Yes, there are boxes of CC and NC in my humidors. My boxes are closed and put into thermoelectric fridges which are set at 15 degrees Celcius (59 F)

I am using heartfelt beads and Silica (clear, unscented kitty litter)that keeps RH at about 68%.

I'd say one every week or so.

I check about every week too.

But after reading this thread I'm starting to think that checking every week seems excessive.
